Thanks very much for your honest video,, it has convinced me to let a mechanic do the job with the correct tools
I hope your back is sorted out..

I remember this job. I had just brought the car and needed the balljoints replaced to get a road worthy. I was quoted $1200 dollars from memory so I thought I'd do it myself. it took 2 weeks by the time a made adapters for the g clamp to fit smooth. I had all the same problems you had. It was the first mechanical thing I'd done to the disco, and hated every minute of it.
I am curious. how much did they quote you to do the other ball joints and how much did they charge you in the end?

I never had the other side done. I had planned to do it myself (I have no idea why!) but sold the car before I had the chance- Gave the new joints to the new owner. From memory I think it was about $500 a side.

Shame you split the rubber, it will fail unless you find a way to seal it, I'd just replace it

It looks like you put the top in backwards. It should have come up from the bottom of the hole so that the weight of the axel rests on the ring around the ball joint. That is the way mine were in on the discos and P38s I have done. I’m going to go back and look at how your’s came out.

I went out and looked at mine and I am absolutely wrong. They do go in from the top.
