    Agree with other comments here that this was a really good tutorial. One comment though and that's about resolution. Nothing against what's said here when you know what the scan is going to be used for, but for me that's usually not the case. I just scan at a more or less the same resolution (ppi) and never look at file sizes. The resolution I choose depend on the scanner. Ther are reviews for most scanners on the net and the real optical resolution form most Epson flatbed scanners are somewhere around 2000 ppi, maybe up to 2500.
    I'll set it to 3200 or even 4800 to make sure I get all the info the scanner can resolve but going above 3000-3200 really just make larger file sizes without adding info. You'll get equally good results by just enlarging the image in post processing. Of course, going to a higher ppi while scanning will save the resize step in post if you already know you'll need all the pixels so no harm done except for a larger ifle.

    • @meldrew728
      @meldrew728 Рік тому

      I understand this but I’m not so sure on the resolution I should use for electronic viewing where file size/space is at a premium. I appreciate there is a trade off in quality at lower resolutions but is there a point at which higher resolution doesn’t make an appreciable difference. This is purely for old family snaps (1950’s - 1990’s) from not-so-high quality cameras. Thanks.

    • @frstesiste7670
      @frstesiste7670 Рік тому

      There are different philosophies. Personally I always scan with the highest real resolution of the scanner, then resize for different uses.
      Others prefer to scan for a specific target which mean rescanning if they ever need a higher res file.
      For electronic viewing doesn't say much, but for example Facebook currently don't tallow more than 2048 pixels wide images and what they show in the feed is much lower. Other sites have different rules.

    Hi Jens, (Hope spelling is correct), thank you. To echo others, this is the best V550 UA-cam tutorial I have come across. Clear, concise and informative. It touched on areas I had not used or understood. The interface looks a little different to mine; which version of Epson Scan do you use, and Windows or Mac? Aiming for 20-40 mb file sizes each time was interesting.

After having my V600 Perfection for several years it is time to blow off the dust on moth my scanner and my slides. You've helped set me up for success. I'm guess that TIFF is a better format if I want to do some touchups in Lightroom and then convert to JPEG for sharing? Thoughts?

    This was so informative and easy to follow. Thank you! I have the Epson V600, but it appears that it is basically the same as the scanner in your demo. Without a proper manual I was really lost. Now I feel confident that I can move forward with my project.
    I am preparing to scan over 500 family slides from the 1950s to 1970s, and also some early prints and large format negatives--for sharing and so we will have a digital archive. I plan on saving in TIFF format, and will only do the higher resolution if it there is a request for making a larger print. For archiving and viewing electronically, what resolution would you recommend? Is there a resolution that would support 4x6 prints as well but still not be too large? Thank you again!

    • @urbanimage
      @urbanimage 3 роки тому +1

      @@mikeh2291 Silver halide emulsion when exposed to light and developed isn't an analog process. As far as I can tell the term 'analog camera' was first used in connection with early video cameras that were recording on to tape - so a true analog at the recording stage. I think most people who use the word now in connection with film mean it in the incorrect sense of 'not digital'. Of course, this meaning will become correct as it is absorbed in to English and arrives in dictionaries. Wikipedia already has an extensive article on analog photography. So it must be right, I suppose 8-)
