      i'm 66 and started about 3 months ago and I have finished my first James Bastien book for older beginners and I have also learned half of John Bastiens classic themes. I just started on Hanon about 2 weeks ago and I also use Piano Nanny as a supplement.
      You can do it. It just takes practice and you will learn faster if you practice a lot....that's a given. I practice about 3 to 6 hours a day, just depends on how things are going.
      Yep, with this song, the main riff was my problem. I knew how to play it, but getting it down smooth and in time took me about 2 weeks of 20 minutes a day, but I've finally got it. I'm now working on learning the rest of the song.
      Hang in there...you can do it. Practice and more practice

      Very impressive to have done it in 30 mins. It's a great tutorial..but I'm not sure it's total beginner! I've been playing for years and this still took me several days to get right...if one hasn't spent a lot of time playing Ab Major (as in my case)..it was also a couple days building muscle memory on Ab major chords and the various inversions. Have tended to always run away from Ab and Eb major...so has been a great song to actually take that challenge on properly and stop avoiding those keys!! Thanks.

    one of the best video I've seen on UA-cam and I'm happy that i can see notes and chords.I want to play the song and sing it,so i suggest first u show the chords and parts,the form of a whole song(A verse,B bridge,C...)and after that u can show the vocal line,cause i don't want to learn how to play the vocal line,i already sing it,i think so r the others.
    Everything else is perfect
    thanx

    Hi this is a great lesson. Thank you for showing us the chords for The main riff along with the pattern. The chords at the end which are referred to as the expansion are kind of confusing, perhaps because I’m looking at the image at the bottom. They are just different chords? Why are they called expansion? I will look at them again.

    To say this tune is in Eb major is not correct. It's a bit more complicated than that.
    1. The chords for Eb major are: Eb, Fm, Gm, Ab, Bb, Cm, Ddim. The song uses the Bbm chord, not Bb major, so Eb major as tonic is incorrect.
    2. However the chords of F minor are: Fm, Gdim, Ab, Bbm, Cm, Db, Eb. These are the correct set of chords containing Eb, Bbm and Fm.
    3. F minor is the Ionian mode of Ab Major, so the base key (i.e. scale) of this song is Ab Major, not Eb Major.
    4. However we notice that the Bbm chord is played for twice as long as the Eb and Fm are. This makes Bbm the tonal center of this riff, the tonic.
    5. Therefore the correct key designation for this song is Bb Dorian, aka the Dorian mode of Ab Major. This is what gives the song it's characteristic emotional feel.

    • @PianoteOfficial
      @PianoteOfficial  4 роки тому +1

      Well that could be technically true, but its also so complicated that I can imagine it would put a lot of people off!
      I find it much simpler (and easy to explain) when there is just a non-diatonic chord. That's what accidentals are for anyway!

    • @Gregorovitch144
      @Gregorovitch144 4 роки тому

      @@PianoteOfficial I understand that, and I also understand that you don't need to know all this in order to learn how to play this tune. I just think that it is wrong to confuse folk about keys and modes, especially modes. Teachers find it very difficult to explain modes and folk who try to write music as well as play it, which is a lot of people today with all our DAWS etc, want to understand how modes work and use them to creative advantage in their writing.
      A lot of the difficulty often comes from teachers trying to explain modes in terms of scales. So for example the Bb Minor scale is Bb-C-Db-Eb-F-Gb-Ab whereas the Bb Dorian scale is Bb-C-Db-Eb-F-G-Ab so it is often explained as the 6th degree of Bb minor being sharpened to make Bb Dorian, i.e. the Gb is sharpened to G. This is misleading, and folk realise this when they see that the notes of Bb Dorian are exactly the same as those in the Ab Major scale. If I'm playing these notes, they ask, when exactly am I playing in Ab Major and when am I playing in Bb Dorian? What's the difference?
      The answer of course is that it totally depends on what the tonal center of the passage or chord progression is. If the tonal center is the Ab Major chord then you are playing in Ab Major. If it is Bb minor (as it is in this song by virtue of the repetition of the Bb minor chord in the progression) then you are playing in Bb Dorian.
      This tune is an incredibly well known and popular riff and the reason for that is because it's a classic example of Dorian mode which sets the whole character and mood of the song. It's intrinsic to how the song sounds, why it sounds so good basically, and I just think that folk should know that (if only to mark the issue down for further study later) 'cos it's important. That's why I raised the issue.

      @lpa9974 2 роки тому +2

      @1234gregor Music theory is the best! But your explanation is way advanced and quite complicated. Let’s just start with the basics-that’s why people come here. If he had taught this using all of your terminology, no one would even want to try it if they were beginners or intermediate. Your explanation would be like reading a sentence in a book and getting into compound and complex sentence structures, etc. Jordan’s explanation and demonstration are really good just the way it is! (Please don’t reply telling me why my sentence structure is wrong.)

    There is a small mistake in the sheet music when it goes into the end of bridge. The left hand stays till the end with the same triad. You played it like this but the sheet shows wrong left hand. See video at 12:16.
