Welcome to the final episode...well done getting through this show...it is a tough one. I really like the way the makers of the show added the notes at the end to cover some of the things they got wrong, simplified, or made more dramatic...I just wish they had done more of that, or been more honest. For example, they say that "it has been reported" that everyone on the "Bridge of Death" died...but those reports are very much NOT true....so technically, they are being truthful, but not quite. Other things they do not admit to, I can understand...such as the fact that Legasov was not even at the trial of Dyatlov and company...but it is kind of necessary to turn him into a kind of hero figure and have him do much more than he really did so that the story can be simplified enough for most folks to keep track of. So I hope by the end of the episode, it is clear that the reason that everyone was so certain that an RBMK could not explode, is because the Soviet State kept it secret that the emergency shutdown system could make an RBMK explode if all the control rods had been pulled out. You wondered about that early on in this reaction, so I hope that it is clear why the men running the reactor were not entirely at fault for what happened.
I remember this very well. It was all over the news and it's hard to believe it was so long ago.. It affected so many countries including here in the UK for many years. From a BBC News article, 22 March 2012. "The disaster in 1986 affected 10,000 UK farms, including 334 in north Wales. The movement of sheep was heavily restricted after the nuclear disaster. Before farmers could sell livestock, the animals' radiation levels had to be monitored. If they were above a certain level, the sheep were moved to another area and the levels had to subside before they could be sold and consumed. The lifting of the restrictions comes after a 12-week consultation with key stakeholders including consumers, affected farmers, farming unions and trade bodies. The FSA board agreed to lift the controls from 1 June, 2012."
There is a documentary released AFTER this series was released - about what happened to Lyudmilla after Chernobyl. she returns to Pripyat to point at her old apartment; it's hard to watch, she's still...suffering. I was in high school when this happened, and I CLEARLY remember how the whole world slowly got more and more scared, as news leaked out of the USSR and Europe.
It'd hard to watch this as a scientist, it's so sad to watch the Republican party descend into anti-science denials about global warming, vaccination. It makes me want to cry.
I agree. We now live in a post-fact world where lies take precedence over evidence as long as it fits with belief. The exact opposite of the scientific method. If we haven't already passed the tipping point for extreme climate change, we're going to because of this anti-science revival.
I know that is a completely different material, but I can very much recommend you to watch the making off documentary of the game STALKER 2 (Made in Ukraine). It is not THAT much about the game, but a lot about ukraine as a country and its past, Chernobyl included. Might not be good for a reaction, but if you are interested, it is a very good and heartbraking video to watch.
Did your channel get screwed over? I noticed you're re uploading all your old content. Did your original channel get deleted? I don't remember having to re sub.
That exchange between Shcherbina and Legasov before Legasov's part of the trial is so powerful. Just incredible acting.
