Ranga Shankara AHA!'s Little Cloud - Kapila Venu (Kutiyattam)

"Sita in the Forest"
Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent many years of their exile in the beautiful forests, building huts made of leaves and living on the forests' plentiful bounty. Sita, especially, is dearly loved by the animals of the forest - deer graze at her feet, the peacock dances for her, and the birds sing their songs for the lovely Sita, who loves the animals back dearly and is always kind to them!
One of the most widely-renowned Kutiyattam exponents, Kapila Venu is the disciple of the legendary Guru Ammanur Madhava Chakyar, also having learnt from his senior disciple Usha Nangiar. Born into a family of artistes, she was initiated into the arts at the age of 7, trained in Mohiniattam by her mother Nirmala Paniker and mentored by her father, Gopalan Nair Venu, also a famed Kutiyattam exponent, in the art form. She spent many years studying and working under dancer Min Tanaka in Japan and has received several prestigious awards for her excellence in the arts. She is currently the director of Natanakairali Research and Performing Centre for Traditional Arts, in addition to being a visiting faculty member at the National School of Drama and Intercultural Theatre Institute (Singapore).
With roots that go back to over 2000 years ago, Kerala's Kutiyattam is one of the oldest theatre forms of our country. A beautiful blend of Sanskrit's formality and Kerala's local traditions, this art form has graduated from the traditional Koothambalam of temples to prestigious stages worldwide.
The importance and relevance of stories remain unchanged through the years; it is the way we move forward. It is with this aim and the extraordinary circumstances we find ourselves in that made us take our signature storytelling programme, "Little Cloud" (under AHA! - Theatre for Children) onto a digital platform. All the videos were shot during the COVID-19 lockdown with just phone cameras!
As our Artistic Advisor, Arundhati Nag, puts it, "Today, more than ever before, as we look into the way we have conducted our lives and the kind of world we are going to bequeath to the little ones, we need to share with them stories. Stories that will enlarge their sense of self-sufficiency, respect for others, sense of justice, sharing, caring and many more ways to negotiate and shape the different world ahead."

ഇത്തരം ശാസ്ത്രീയ കലാരൂപങ്ങൾക്ക് കളിക്കാരെ മാത്രം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയെടുത്താൽ പോരാ കാഴ്ചക്കാരെ കൂടി നമ്മൾ രൂപപ്പെടത്തിയെടുക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. അതു കുട്ടികളിലൂടെ തുടങ്ങുകയും വേണം. ഈ ശ്രമം തുടരണം. എല്ലാ ഭാവുകങ്ങളും.
