A few tips on Tofflemire Matrices - including the lingual and buccal versions and that pesky pedo version that tends to show up in operative kits - making band placement really difficult. Additionally, another "classic" tip is to take a section of another tofflemire matrix to make it circumferential for those complex amalgam restorations.
This is part of a series regarding complex amalgam restorations.

I have been practicing for 30 years and still do 50 percent amalgam. I have banded from lingual many times but never knew when or why to use the angled tofflemire. Thanks for clearing it up for me after 30 years!
Wow. I respect your comment sir! I've learnt from this...
Bruh where did you buy amalgam, nobody sell it anymore 😭
Check you blood Mercury level, chances it’s high, May effect you health badly, need to detox it.
Thats really interesting, in 5 years qualified i never knew of a contra-angle tofflemire, henry shine here i come!
My class was instructed to never place them lingually only facial or buccal. Nice to know you can and there is one for the lingual!
When it is contra angle I think we can keep it lingual ly
Buccle is kinda facial haha
Tip: when you need the straight retainer, loop the band and place it in the fork upside-down so that the open end of the "U" faces AWAY from the gingiva. The band can't slip out, and the loop will constrict tighter at the gingival portion of the band (under the box)
But retainer removal will be difficult
I would have liked to see the contra-angle placed lingual with the band. Than you for the video.
Thank you so much! great tips!
thanks I'm doing dental assistant exam ,,, It was helpful ..
thanks for the info Doc! Hate it when an assistant hands me a Tofflemire holder and it just seems a little off !
I didn't even know placing in the lingual side was possible. I was just taught buccal/facial
Does anyone know why V-ring is not used for amalgam restoration? V-ring is so much easier to place and it creates a much better shape than matrix band.
This is such a great question, and I’ve actually never questioned it! I’ve been doing the same thing for 25 years and never thought about using a sectional matrix for an amalgam!

Thanks alot
thank u, it was helpful
thanks a lot that was helpful
most burdensome aspect of dentistry...would've been nice to see if he actually slot the band onto the tooth with absolute ease
Such a Great comment! I cut some video for you this morning about this exact thing! LOL . www.loom.com/share/c29fcd43c1fd4b44981d808109e1f7b5.
Here is a big tip for yall:
Use Tor matrix.
how does the band retain itself on the last molar , when the distal surface is usually sunken down in the gum .? I always thought it would just slide off when its tightened .
Pretty sure dentists just take out wisdom teeth instead of trying to treat them.
@@trucid2 he’s talkin about the 2nd molars dumass
@@bonkersvideos6073 Rude
It must be on buccal side
Sometimes as he mentioned when buccal cusps are missing it is more helpfull. In fact sometimes it is the only possible way to avoid undercontoured/unstable matrix
why place lingually ?
👍👍👍
are you using still amalgam? hahahahahahah
Why not? There is stuations like bad mouth hygenie that we use amalgam. And no, its not more harmful than composite filling materials.
What’s wrong with amalgam?
@@endemikpandemi There might be some indication but cost-benefits doesn't out way a proper composite filling under rubberdam in layers. People who are against composite don't know how to use it! Besides you have to sacrifice a lot sound tooth for mechanical retention for your amalgam!
@@gillespaling7039 lack of chemical bonding, need to sacrifice sound tooth structure to have mechanical retention, ugly and in some cases health issues
@@salima7394 Composite doesn't have chemical bonding either. Amalgam is cheaper, doesn't need a rubber dam, has superior mechanical properties has anti-bacterial properties contrary to composite and can survive for decades.
I'm not a dentist but I have the tools and product and have been doing my own fillings for years. So well that the dentist never knew.
WTF lol
Ray this is illegal!! Stop This! Quack !!
cure your own cancer too. It's cooking in your brain now.
Never do that... what the hell? Do you even know when filling is indicated or matter of fact contraindicated?
this is amazing, how do you see in your own mouth
