@enxcrypted18 yeah I'd give it a go. The Gourami will tend to use the top of the tank more where as these will use the mid and bottom levels. I don't see them bothering the Gourami and they're quick enough to get out of the Gouramis' way so I figure it would work.
@enxcrypted18 no worries. Thing is each fish has it's own personality same as we do hey. I can't say 100% it'll be fine but on balance I'd judge it should be fine. They're great fish, you'll enjoy them.
Dear Daniel: These five-banded barbs (Desmopuntius pentazona johorensis), appear to be doing very well for you in your, community tank. I'd love to see if they can be successfully bred in a species tank. Since it is an egg scattering species, I believe they could be bred in a similar manner to the way I'm breeding Columbian tetra (Hyphessobrycon columbianus). My water is much too hard and alkaline for them, however. Thank you for posting your, interesting and informative video on this, lovely species. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar
Thank you very much for the compliment there. Always nice to hear something like that from a fellow fish keeper. Agree with you too, one of the nicest Barbs for sure.
I know right? Rummies are amazing schoolers so it is their instinct. I guess with none others around it decided to join a group of fish with similar behaviour and that are no threat.
This is one of the best species profiles that I have ever seen! The only problem that I have with it is now I am going to build a new 40 gal. around a school of 11 of these. ALL YOUR FAULT! 😤
Thank you bud. I agree. Don't know why more people don't keep them. The Snakeskin Barbs are quite similar and just as pretty. I've not had them yet but can imagine they'd have the same temprement.
Another quality vid 👍Kept these but only in a shoal of 6 in a heavily planted aquarium and hardly ever saw them, I agree you definitely need to keep them in high numbers for them to be at there best and be brave enough to come out
Thank you very much. Stephen. Yeah definitely. Mine roam the tank all the time even with bigger fish present. Sure it's because there's a few more of them.
I have a community of a bunch of different types of tetras and some cherry barbs. Along with some corydoras and otocinclus. I also currently have 3 five banded barbs and they are always out and peaceful and I plan on getting another 10 or so of them
Nicely done. Daniel, any tips on breeding? I'm thinking of moving a few of my school into a 25 with floating water sprite and then removing the parents back to their school after they lay. But I've never bred a scattering species.
Yes you can keep them with Cories. They can be quick to food but enough should make it to the bottom for the Cories especially if you offer a mix of floating and sinking foods. I tend to drop food to both ends of the tank to ensure it gets spaced out and all the fish get some.
So I use a thin layer of Tropica clay based substrate then gravel. It's small rounded gravel in different colours mixed up I used for this tank. I try to keep to a reasonable budget so anyone can set up tanks the same as I do. I haven't used Eco Complete myself but I understand it is very good. Folk who use it tend to speak highly of it.
Nice barb , in my village in Central Borneo Indonesia we have to,like snakeskin barb, tiger barb,t-barb and many more ❤️ 👍. Lets we support each other to conservate all kind wild barb 🙏
I don't see why not. I've never noticed any aggression in them at all. They may eat tiny fry they come across but most any fish you keep with livebarers will do that.
@@patrickevelyn8028 they are underrated if you ask me. Always feel like they school nicely in a fair sized tank too. I never kept them with Guppies but I've kept them with Mollies and it was fine. Hope you find some and enjoy them as much as I have.
I'm not certain of that bud. I keep them with other fish and since they exhibit no parental responsibilities the eggs they scatter get eaten pretty quickly. You would need to set up a separate tank to breed them which I haven't done at this point.
@@DanielKeepingFish I didn't mean fry, I have just got five banded barbs and they are really small just wondering how long they take to get fully grown
@@trigerhappy1980 oh right. Well if you got them at a smaller size they are generally sold at in stores then I'd say you only have approximately two or three months to go then.
I have a single female krib, she had a mate but she murdered him, so I am just going to just keep her by herself. Does she bother the barbs at all? Right now mine is in with a school of red eyes, a molly, clown pleco, and she pays no one any mind. I wanted to add a small school of these or cherry barbs to fill up the middle to lower half of my 40 gallon planted breeder tank
Haha, so many fish to keep... They get a bad rap sometimes. I even read online that you can't keep these with the likes of Angelfish because they nip at their fins but that is certainly not my experience. There are semi-aggressive varieties like the Tigers but most Barbs I find to be vary peaceful and good community fish.
I've never seen that. I haven't kept them with every kind of fish of course so maybe the would nip at the likes of Guppy tails but I found them to be very peaceful.
Really good video and information. Some great looking barbs!
Thank you bud. They're pretty cool right?
Wonderful little fish. They have a great home to explore and stimulate their wee brains. 🙂
Thanks very much Jeff.
They really are nice and interesting wee fish especially in a group.
Thank you Daniel. I’ve never seen these fish before. All the information you gave was very helpful.
Thank you Susan. They are great wee fish. Ideal shoaling fish for non-aggressive setups.
Nice documentary mate. You have pretty much covered everything a fish keeper needs to know. Well done 👍
Thank you bud. I hope it encourages people to try them. Such a nice fish.
@@DanielKeepingFishwould you keep them with pearl gourami?
@enxcrypted18 yeah I'd give it a go. The Gourami will tend to use the top of the tank more where as these will use the mid and bottom levels. I don't see them bothering the Gourami and they're quick enough to get out of the Gouramis' way so I figure it would work.

Hard not to fall in love with these wee fellas right enough.
Coolest banded fishes bards 👍🏻👍🏻🤗🤗😄
They're very cool mate. Love them.
Very nice species profile on the barbs my friend.
Thanks very much homes. I set out trying to be balanced but I couldn't help saying how great I think these guys are.
Beautiful fish!!
They sure are Ash. I'm surprised they are not more widely kept.
beautiful fish great info 👍🏻
Thank you very much. They are a really good community fish.
Daniel that is a beautiful fish and I love the personality. Very nice indeed.
They really are Robert. I'm surprised they are not a more widely kept species.
Barbs-my favorite
All of them are pretty cool hey.
Hello Daniel!!! Beautiful fish!!!
Thanks very much Dawn. Aye I really like them as you could probably tell.
Great video mate. Thanks for all the great info. New sub 😁
Thanks Vader. Great you enjoyed it or found it useful.
It's funny how Rummy Nose Tetra is schooling / schoaling with them :D

First. Shared out.
Oh thank you very much bud.
Awesome fish I also subbed
They really are a great fish. 👍
Love your set up Dan I used to have some tiger barbs
Thanks Grandad. Yeah they're right wee characters aren't they?
I like that these are similar to tigers in appearance.

Amazing how big is your tank id love to see pictures
Thanks. This tank is long and low, 6ft x 16in x 16in. It was a custom I'd noticed on sale and had to snap it up.
Can they be kept with corydoras? Just wondered if they'd out-compete them for food.

Do they nip at plants
I've never seen them bother plants at all.
Wow, dont know why they are not more popular than tigers.
