Great diagnosis! I've seen it once before in the ICU and our staff made the diagnosis!
We rarely use Atenolol here in Canada. I've never prescribed it myself, but once in a blue moon, I've seen an elderly patient on it as a home medication.
Extreme Fatigue 😩 reduces quality of life....also causes depression. Why is that not addressed?

amaaaaaazing review of BRASH
I took Atenolol 50 mg / twice daily for a year along with Dabigatran for Afib , had every nasty side effect and sat in a chair unable to function for most of that year , minimal GP interest in side effects , after third fainting episode with full body fitting in shopping centre car park , I decided to ditch them , very nasty tablets . Feeling better every day now , slowly gaining my breath back , the Atenolol was the bad one , after 4 weeks off it I took 1 tab to check side effects , i was ready to ring for the ambulance after 3 hours , could not breath and heart was doing very odd stuff , I sat in a chair quietly for the rest of the day until it wore off , that stuff is no good !
It helps relax the Heart Beat, and helps with anxiety / Social Anxiety
"DI-hydros" have DI in the words! NefeDIpine, AmloDIpine. Thats how I always remembered them

@@ConanLiuMD In addition, I differentiate the 2 CCBs by, "Di- dihydropyridine" that DIlates the blood vessels; that's why these medications (like amlodipine) will cause peripheral/ankle edema. Vs. NOn-dihydropyridine --> the "NO" helps me to remember that it works on the "Nodes" or the heart like Verapamil and Diltiazem.
So amlodipine is no good ?that’s what I take and losartan
Hi! What if your doctor has prescribed atenolol for POTS (Postural Tachycardia Syndrome) and not hypertension? Is there a better treatment?
I just want to know what kind of diet you need while taking Atenolol. Being someone who mostly vegan diet I’m curious. I sometimes eat fish also.
I’m on atenolol for hyperthyroidism. I want to get off of this and my other medication (Methimazole). 😑
I got to stop taking atenolol on Monday. My vo2 max is now above average. While on atenolol my vo2 max was below average and it was very frustrating because I was working out regularly.
I take the pill and it doesn't bother me

What would YOU prescribe to someone with IST and POTS whose bp can be low, but systolic shoots up during a POTS/tachycardia episode?Main complaint is lightheadedness when there are these episodes with wide pulse pressures between diastolic and systolic bp? For example diastolic 60 systolic 128?

btw, Princess Mari, were you also prescribed Lexapro (SSRI) in addition to Atenolol? I have found this helped b/c let me tell you - the atenolol will bring your mood down.
@@MathewRyan111 he did not. Only Atenelol. I started taking it for a few days, but I stopped because I got a little freaked out. To tell you the truth, I have felt better off of it. It was lowering my bp more. Instead, I did a little research and am trying probiotics that specifically activate the parasympathetic system, among a few other supplements. Why do you want to get off of it? What are you experiencing?
@@princessmari5063 Atenolol (and I'm guessing all beta blockers) tend to rob you of your energy, which makes sense because they lower your heart rate. They also tend to lower my mood/cause some depression, and I'm pretty sure they are responsible for at least some of my weight gain. That said, they do keep my heart rate in a lower, safer range. I'd just like to find the healthiest plan for me and maybe one day come off of them.
@@MathewRyan111 I am so sorry you are going through all this. From what I have researched, you can get off Atenelol but if has to be VERY gradual. If anyone tells you to do it cold turkey, DONT. I started controlling my crazy heart rate increases with exercise, calming probiotics, garlic, potassium & magnesium supplements. I am not going to say I am cured, but I feel that it has definitely helped a lot. When I tried the Antenelol I was lightheaded and my bp was getting lower and lower. Would you consider alternative medicine that encourages nutrition changes and supplements? I feel for me, I am choosing that. But everyone is different and the severity of POTS different. This condition sucks, but we can get through it one day at a time.
There is something that i dont understand at the start of your video. Why do we usually see it in PRE-RENAL AKI... it doesnt make sense, in prerenal aki, we dont usually see hyperkalemia i suppose because in prerenal AKI, the kidney Kind of THINKS that since less volume going to it, this means the whole cvs is hypovolemic and it increases aldosterone and adh. And we know aldosterone would eliminate potassium and preserve sodium. If potassium gets eliminated then this can actually lead to HYPOkalemia!! Am i missing something?
That's a great point and explanation of the physiology - I guess in this case, it mainly is talking about AKI in general leading to poor clearance of beta blockers (especially atenolol). Beta blockers can increase serum potassium through inhibition of Na/K ATPase - so having the AKI just predisposes you to beta blockers being too high, leading to hyperkalemia and bradycardia/AV block, leading to worsening perfusion and worsening AKI which worsens the ability to clear beta blockers even further.
At 30 years of age, I’m on 25mg of Atenolol for hypertension. I have been diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve with minor regurgitation, which is causing my hypertension (no stenosis, minor thickening of heart muscle).
Is there any other options that I should speak to my cardiologist about?
Talk to your own physician/cardiologist about it, but our first line medications for high blood pressure are usually ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, or thiazide diuretics and not beta blockers. Lisinoprol or amlodipine are often the first go to meds. There may be a reason your cardiologist wants you on a beta blocker though for the bicuspid aortic valve so please ask them. In general atenolol is a pretty old school medication though and there are better beta blockers out there such as metoprolol and carvedilol

I was just wanting some recommendations as to what research says is the best/safest option for beta-blockers, longterm (I hope to have the need to be on these for the next 40 years).

I'm 33 and I was prescribed Atenolol for tachycardia by a GP (25mg). Then shortly after, I consulted with an internist who increased my dosage to 50mg.
Since then, I've done a bit of research on Atenolol and discovered it can have some undesirable effects, and now I really want to get off the meds, so I'm just wondering what might be a good alternative to it.

Is nebivolol better than atenlol in terms of testosterone maintain and Ed ?
Yes, a bit better
Nebivolol also less likely to raise your Blood sugar

It would be an off label use, this class of meds can be used for anxiety but usually the one of choice is propranolol which is taken before anxiety inducing situations

@@ConanLiuMDI have been on 25 mg of Atenolol for 26 yrs. I am now 67 yrs old. I was put on them after having period of Afib, palpitations and anxiety for the first ten years. I haven’t had any afib episodes or rarely any palpitations in last ten years. I’ve spoken to my family doctor who put me on it 26 years ago who is still my family doctor about weaning off Atenolol or switching to something else. He don’t want to in his words, “ fix something that isn’t broke.” Any ideas? I do still have GAD but haven’t had a full blown panic attacks in maybe 10 years. I do take 5mg of Valium for that as I don’t tolerate SSRI’s well or like their side effects.
@@ConanLiuMDwhat is a good replacement for 25 mg of Atenolol? Been on it for 28 years for bouts of Afib/ anxiety. I haven’t had either for last 5 years but I take Atenolol 25mg once a day. Never missed but if I take it late or forget it my heart rate will go up quicker when doing any activity. I have been down to 12.5 mg a few times for months with no problems I notice. If I need it to lower heart rate is there a better alternative?
@@ConanLiuMDbeen on 25 mg of Atenolol since I was 45. Symptoms some bouts of Afib, tachycardia and anxiety. I am now 67 yrs old and haven’t had any of those symptoms in at least 8 years. If I miss one my heart rate definitely increases from the normal 72 on it to 80-85 and with activity it goes up pretty quick. Would like to at least change. What is a better alternative then 25 mg of Atenolol for these symptoms?

"Higher Death rates" Uhmmm is this because Atenolol HAS been around much longer and the patients ARE older? "Figures don't lie ..but liars figure". That being said if one experiences bad side effects (I do not for 30+ years) then of course choose another option. The old "one study says" syndrome.
Been on 25mg of Atenolol for 27 years. What is a better option? I do think it causes fatigue, pre- diabetes, may take toll on kidneys for that long of period. I would like a change after 27 years.
