For me, the best part of this adventure was seeing how strangers came together to help you. You turned what could have been a terrible situation into a fun day and made new friends in the process. Well done, James!
As soon as I saw that bulging gasket I knew there were two o-rings. Only because I am also an idiot and have done it myself!
I have changed so many I was blown away I did that! Ended up making for a great video and one hell of an adventure though!

Yep, did this on my gf old TDI Jetta but it was the oil filter. Definitely hurt the motor but it survived lol.
Did the same damn thing on my f250. lol
An oil filter fooled me once, and I showered the new guy
That is a memory you’ll have forever. These kind of things I’m sure happened all the time 100 years ago . Gone are those days.
The owner of the company I worked for had his legs degloved while working inside a rock crusher. Someone fired it up while he was inside. He survived. Walks around with 2 canes. Had arms on him bigger around then my head. He grabbed a beam above him when his legs got pulled in between the rollers. Saved his life.
Always lock out the machine. Put a padlock on the door.
Look up "shaking hands with danger" on UA-cam. It's a catchy safety video from decades ago
Wow. Imagine having that kind of presence of mind to literally save himself while in more pain than most people could even comprehend. I crushed my forearm back in 2007 while disconnecting a float trailer from my dump truck and I still marvel that I was able to remain conscious throughout the entire ordeal. I literally BEGGED the attending paramedics to put me out even before they got me into the ambulance because I was in more pain than I ever experienced in my entire life. Of course realistically they couldn’t do that and it was actually a good thing (medically speaking) that I was still conscious throughout the entire ordeal (at least until they rushed me into surgery). So, all n’ all, six surgeries, partial loss and 3 years of recovery taught me many lessons I hope to never endure again.
Next time you fly to buy, carry a small socket/wrench set you can stuff in your carry on bag! Obviously leave screwdrivres and blades out! Just the sockets & wrenches!
Buy a toolkit when you get there.
The ooolllllld double gasket! The badges we have to earn to be a real mechanic! Good on ya, keep er tuned!
words from a wise man, always have a tool bag on hand when you run a 7.3 across country. i had a excursion that had the 7.3 and kept my tool bag in the front with a spare fuel filter just in case. didn't need it but made me feel better going from South ND to South GA.
What an awesome group of guys. Kudos to you for admitting your mistake. Safe travels home!
We need to help this ingenious gentleman with his dream by buying merchandise from his company.
THANK YOU JIM!
@@ExpeditionRanchTV I just did. $229.00
This dude has that crazy ability to make friends with anyone that I wish I had man
It was working fine, and he had to touch it!
this one was certainly on me! lol
this one was certainly on me! lol
I bought a F250 Superduty with 7.3l powerstroke in 1999 brand new. I’ve done exactly what you did by putting on double o-rings on the filter. I found mine right after changing while checking for leaks. I get it, it happens. Distracted or whatever. Also, always carried a spare cam position sensor in the glove box too! Anyway, I always appreciate the sound the 7.3l makes starting up
I bought a camper 5 hours away from home last November and I didn’t think to bring even basic tools with me and had a scare about the axle bolt on one of the tires being loose, I made it safely despite everything, congrats on getting your truck sorted and back on the road
Glad it was an easy fix, sorry it was a not so easy adventure to get it fixed!!
it was honestly a fun adventure. Super happy it was an easy fix
On the list for the next purchase: Buy truck, stop by harbor freight and get a set of tools. But then you would not have met the crushing crew...
God bless the kindness of strangers. It never fails to humble me or make me emotional, especially these days. Respect to everyone involved ❤
At least it was a mistake that was easily fixed. Getting the tools was the hard part. Keep on truckin.
Some states use the body for titling (Illinois) for sure. Meaning you can take a dodge challenger SRT and put a Toyota Corolla body on it and it registers as the Corolla
Going from Montana to Sacremento would have taken you by my place here in nowhere NV...glad you made it out safely...
@15:07 I build classic vehicles and we use modern suspension drive trains underneath them we do frame swaps and for what you want and what you're talking about registration was you running off of the VIN number on the 67 cab. Your best bet is to buy a 67 bump side register it, pull the cab off of it and put it on that truck frame that you want to do and they cannot say anything about it.
But if you're going to do it your best bet is to literally cut out the firewall and floorboards of the original cab from the frame and leave the dash with it then cut out the the firewall and floorboards of the 67 and marry the two together so you can use your cruise control you can use the air conditioning every modern amenities with an old cab over the top of it
The speedometer is due to four pins rhat reach past the speedo mechanism and penetrate the circuit board behind it. In mt 92 F250, with E4OD trans, it caused MAJOR shifting issues. I solved it by soldering the pins into the circuit board
You have got to be the only guy moving to the hell hole called califonia. Good for you, as a young guy doing something cool.
Working on the crushers was some of the hardest, dirtiest, hottest, coldest and longest days Id ever worked. Props to the guys who make careers out of that work.
I always leaned when you change a part that isn’t tech broken to save it and the parts.
But your fortunate it was something simple
Just found your channel last episode. Love that you embrace adventures and the good and bad they entail.
Amazing video dude. It was great to see people trade time for service instead of immediately asking for money or other weird stuff. These are the people that have been through things and know the value of a good trade. The story so far is epic. I feel like this should be a movie
Glad you made it. Way better than those fake "will it drive 500 miles home videos". The crusher crew were hella cool.
I am so dang happy it was just the 1 too many O-rings problems, I commented my thoughts on the last video about the fuel bowl, and you said wate until this video to see. Well, I think I guessed ok for just seeing it on video and not being there in person. Best of luck with the rest of your trip.
Great utilization of all available resources, wherever they may be! Thinking outside the box at its best!
I cannot even comprehend why you did not at least have some basic hand tools before you started home. That is definitely on you. But you actually got you're situation resolved in a good way.
LOL when you were washing the truck and then spraying your junk, the expression of pain was like you got a water shave that was painful or you cut it off with that water. LOL So cool they helped you out as well. As always keep up the great work and can't wait to see what you have for us next.
@16:20 the 5.4L Tritons are horrible only because of the spark plug threads in the heads they blow out even when you do the kit to fix them they blow those spark plugs out too.
Man, washing the underside like that was rough 😂. Great video, you're way underrated. The jazz music is classy, keep it up.
That mud was so bad! I kept getting it in my eyes and that was the worst part
If you Build the 67 or any other pre emmission stuff, you title it as a 67, I don't know Cali information, but the weight problem is normally solved if you title it as an RV, and you might be able to title it in a not inspection state which is what i would mostly suggest
Are you sure? I know in Nevada, the truck would be registered by the year the frame or any identifiable vins so it would be a 06 model year via the VIN inspections done at the DMV
@@manuelquinones2052 You can title a vehicle as the year of the vehicle if you use a different engine than the frame ever had
@@MDMcVay11462I don't think you quite understand what he's doing. He's taking a frame of a 2005+ F-550, putting a Cummins in it, then putting a '67 Body on it. I'm aware where I'm at, you'd either title it as the truck the chassis is from (in this case a 2005+ F-550) or as a kit car, which has a lot of restrictions attached and would make the model year the same as the year of registration for legal purposes
Good video man, but with mining equipment like that, i know you said youve never worked on it before, but you need to make sure its locked out and tagged. that's to prevent out anyone from turning that machine on while your inside of it. one bump start of a motor could take a limb off. seemed like good dudes and a small operation but saftey doesnt sleep for anyone.
This was my thought exactly. I works for a big custom home builder when I was younger and the safety meetings were a big deal. I was very surprised how it was run. But you are right, small operation
Dude! I used to live where you broke down. I'm not at all surprised at the help you received. Dang good people around there. And a few sketchy ones too. 😂
This video has make me realize I need to just take chances and who knows what will go down love your videos bro
Well, I am glad you made it and got your truck fixed. Yeah. I travel out in No Where Nevada too mainly on the eastside and it's sure desolate. I know you'll have an awesome camper build once your done. I like the builds that your are doing they are awesome. Thanks for sharing
Well said...and 100% correct.
With the 67 cummins f350 idea, maybe get a old ford grain truck cab or simular, that way you will have the capacity and smog
10/10 video man I need this kinda dad lore in my life you really just motivated me to take more chances I’m gonna strive to do that now wow man thank you
Bro, you are my new favorite channel.
That's worth a sub. Great video. All in the spirit of adventure
The post 2005 5.4 triton in an E-Series is a two valve (NOT 3 valve with cam phasers) . The pre 2005 spit spark plugs. The E Series NEVER had any thing but 2 valves (the one you want!)
That was quite an adventure! Ive actually done the same thing but with an oil filter. Sh*t happens, just roll with it.
title it out of Vermont as a 2006 and don't worry about California emissions. they'll allow you to title and register it there without actually being in the state. find a modified car club near you and I'm sure they could help you with it.
What a awesome trade for time and help. Sitting trucks will start leaking once you start using them. Its a good bet that if your driving a 20 year old project truck at 25 you have likely worked on things!
ive been there too with leaving an old o-ring stuck and not paying attention haha
obviously you posted about it, edited and posted the video. So hopefully no spoilers, so glad you made it out okay. Summer heat in the desert is no joke. This could have gone very much worse. You lucked out finding these guys! and honestly I've left an old gasket on an oil filter when changing it. It didn't last anytime before it failed unlike that fuel filter gasket
There’s always enough time to do it right the second time.
Bunch of good guys.
New subscriber here … awesome channel man. You have very good quality videos and editing skills. You will go far keep it up! Can’t wait to see what there is to come!
what a awesome adventure and fun video! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! I called it I said, I bet he left the old gasket on there.
I'm an old diesel mechanic. I haven't worked on any for over 30 years but I saw it and I called it. I was surprised that I was right. I've never seen that happen on a fuel filter. I've seen it on oil filters when the mechanic forgets to take the old gasket out
.
Well, you're not learning if you're not making mistakes.
Dont go too heavy on the South Bend clutch it'll shutter when you engage.
My 92 and my 97 Dodge had the 12 valve Commons it was the most reliable engine I've ever had Would of loved to be able to put that transmission on it. Those transmissions were definitely the weak point on those Dodge trucks. I went through 3 of them on the 97. The 92 was Manual so obviously never had any issues.
If you haven't seen it you should check out Westen Champlin he put a Cummins in a Mustang
I love that camper wish it was a manual but it would be so useful for me, def gotta buy a shirt! Going to go look at a 2010 f250 6.4 4x4 with 164k miles for $15k want a 7.3 stick shift but I can't find one in my price range. Where was this? I need a job out by Winnemucca. My guess is Contact, NV outside of jackpot the great basin hwy too far for me to be driving everyday.
You should go back and see how they fixed it and see it in action.
So they got product in the bottom roller. Yes there is adjuster left and right. But if dust and rocks get in. Left side. It gets tight. Will pull to the left.
If have dust stop that goes across the belt. On a angle. Will stop product going between roller and belt. God on ya young learn my friend.

No tools . Nono
24V had a VP44 injection pump not a CP3.
Whenever I buy a vehicle and plan on driving a long distance home my first stop is harbor freight to get an assortment of basic tools
As a mechanic that’s worked on everything NOTHING IS BULLETPROOF
120 likes let's step up our game people!! This is quality content!!
Just got a new subscriber from Philippines. 😊
that was the best episode yet!
How are you planning to deal with the low cruise speed, or do you care much? I find its a great excuse to take the back roads vs highways with my f550 ambo
Bigger tires which will be perfect for the 4.88 gears
How does registering this truck in California work? I know you can get grandfathered in with diesels but with a non DEF truck from out of state how can you get it registered here?
The guy with the cigarette, you are lucky you have a Diesel! 😛
Damm James, Good to see you're doing cool shit since you left Kenyon. Fuckin keep it up!
you would have to tittle the truck with the 67 Vin goes with the cab
Can’t wait to watch bro!
You are going to laugh so hard when you see what caused the breakdown!
Hey man we all make mistakes!! Lucky it didn’t cost you but a couple hours and couple bucks in diesel.
I actually had no idea that the f550 fuel filter is different than the 250-450. I’ve changed dozens of fuel filters on the 7.3s but never got a chance to work on a 550. I’ll keep that in mind. This is quickly becoming my favorite series on YT. Keep it up and thanks for sharing bro
7.3 is a crazy full germilins
Great Video man! Best one yet!
Didn’t see that coming! Good thing you don’t mind getting dirty to work And you have to be a hard buyer there’s too many scammers out there. But a carFAX would have told you that it sat for 7 years.
I belive the transfer case fluid should be mercon lv not v.
Thank god for men who will climb down into those machines that make big rocks into small rocks.
This is what happens when your on a time line and dont check and recheck stuff. I wouldnt be mad that I left two gaskets more than that it started leaking after holding that long.
You're amazing!
“No fuel in the valley pan” that’s cool
Wow that a lot
Lots of rubber parts need to be rehydrated.
Honestly that place looks like it'd be fun to work at lol
Fluid looks dark bc the top side of everything probably rusted from sitting and then it was drove and mixup
Great video, James!
Pretty awesome guys.
I buy oil by the barrel, both synthetic and petroleum, in many different weights. I have some CAT gear oil that is 20 years old. It still works well. I am religious about changing oil by the hours used or by the miles depending on the equipment. The reason to change it in my mind is because of the level of contamination that use brings. To say a sealed drum of oil is bad because it is five years old is lunacy IMO. How is it we have oil reserves in those bazillion gallon tanks? Do they throw that shit away when it gets some time on it? Rant over, carry on.
The old seals are NOT designed for the new diesel ...need nitrile seals
The guy smoking next to a diesel soaked engine had me on my toes
How do you have no tools in a tool truvk
How are you planing to register a pre 2010 diesel over 14k gvwr in California? Are you going to 1k less mile exempt it? Or is there some other loophole I don’t know about? 🤔
Non op for now. You used to be able to once titled as an RV, lady at the dmv told me that still works. I’m just in California for the build though, don’t plan on staying in the state. A free state is in the future😂
@@ExpeditionRanchTVMT LLC
I would guess they bought that rebuilt transmission out of a junk yard based on the fluid color. Or it was replaced a long time ago.
11:18 guy looks and sounds like a young Keanu reeves
That is wild fuel economy. It has 4.88 gears? I have a late 99 F350 Drw zf6 with 4.10 and I don't get near that. 16 max
I noticed the "V8" badges on the front fenders; do you know what the story is behind that?
Title it with the cab not the frame. The Vin number is on the cab.
Being struck on the side of the road just seems to bring out the best in people! Your adventure mirrors several I’ve seen on UA-cam & personally experienced myself! You’ve just been repaid for the $60 that lady at the airport scammed you out of!!
That's how things were in the 70's. I was a young kid and adults would grab me all the time to help them. Just the way it was, No big deal.
I'm 61 now. Retired and loving life. I do travel a lot.
Now I know this might be a little weird but I know where you can find a right hand drive f-350 or 450 idk remember exactly.
Just to confuse people here in the states! The most American truck unamericanized
@@ExpeditionRanchTVI've seen them pop up for sale on rare occasion in Australia, but they're totally different to the US model (based on Brazilian production iirc as they used an MWM 6cyl turbodiesel) so you might need to wait for it to be importable under the 25 year law
What UA-camrs are out there that could come to the rescue? Merlin Johnson, Murphey's Disele, Paul Cox, and last but not least Matt Wetzle?
Great vid loved this
