When I first passed my HGV, I used to drive a 1628, with a tag axle. 16 speed ZF box was a joy to drive, even though it was really underpowered for 38Tonne. A great truck to start out on. After a few months I stepped up to a 2033, same box but with a few more horses. Awesome V8 sound that I will never forget.

Nice to see one of these in the UK. We're popular in Australia. Our garbage trucks used to commonly be these with a V6 as well as semi trailers dual round headlights and bullbar -looked badass!
South African ones had twin square headlamps which looked good also.
Probably the best looking cab over truck cab ever designed.

Drove Mercs from 1617's up to 2544's, V8's sounded awesome until the tinny V6 Powerliners came in, always got you home a Merc

Just watched this again......I know there's only 247bhp but I'd happily drive this all day, rather than a vague-feeling modern automated truck with 200+bhp more!

The first of this model the brakes were not that hot and the ZF syncro box changed far easier if you doubled the clutch especially changing down. The torque on these Merc engines was lower than competitor engines of similar bhp but the high revs helped to make up for that with the 16 speed box. Thanks for posting.

The only truck I fancy rather than the new models. Real driving is when you drive this truck with a 16 speed shift gearbox

Reminiscing now haha, drove many of them, 1621,,1625 ,,1628, 1633, 1644,, along with the 17 series,
Zf box, range change, hard to believe this was 30 plus years ago

My first trip to the telex Hotel in Ankara was in a left hooker with the air intake on the front, looked odd when back in England with yellow number plate. Great days great bunch of lads on Tir route!!!!

In fact, the V8 by Scania on a 142 M 's got something wild, metallic, so charming, ... Anyway, I love every kind of V8. It is SO perfect! Thanks you very much for sharing!

Is that engine a V6 about 10 litres, I think the 290 was aV8 about 14 litres with ZF 16 speed box,. both quite high revving engines around 2500 rpm on the gov . This brings back memories, thanks very much.

The 1625 had a 14.6 litre V8, OM 422, basically the same engine the 1628 had but throttled down to 250 mhp instead of 280 mhp. I had a 1625 truck with trailer in driving school, had a ZF 6x2 gearbox. 290 mhp was the 1729, same engine with a little more bore and stroke, so it was a 15.1 litre V8, OM 442, had Mercedes 16 speed gearbox. V6 OM 421/OM441 were 10.8 litre 216, later 218 mhp in 1622 and 1722. Since it all were naturally aspirated engines, you had to rev them up for power.

Frank Steinmann I was told the difference between the engine of 1625 versus 1628 is a different fuel pump used, is that correct ?
Come to think of it, since it's just a 30 BHP difference, why did Daimler even bother to have 2 models so close to each other as the 1625 would then appear very 'inefficient' to produce only 250 BHP from such a huge V8 while at 280 BHP at least it then made a little more sense ?

@@hseochin I think the reason behind this is that Mercedes and MAN had an agreement stating that MAN should focus on inline engines, whilst Mercedes was into V-shape engines. As a result, Mercedes supplied MAN with V8 and V10 engine blocks for MAN 16.256 and 16.320 trucks, later 462/502/603 V10, but with MAN-developed cylinder heads. In the old days, 1950's and 1960's time Mercedes fitted inline-six engines to their long-bonnet trucks, like 1620, 1623 and 1624, which were also used in LP cabovers introduced in 1963. All naturally aspirated engines, 240 mhp to the max. These LP trucks had fixed cabs. Then in 1969, to meet new regulations (8 mhp per tonne GCW), new V8 (OM 402) and V10 (OM403) engines were introduced, producing 256 and 320 mhp, and LP cabs were now tilting (only with these new V8 and V10 engines). In 1973 then, new NG trucks were introduced, but LP trucks were still available until 1976. These new NG trucks never came with big inline-six engines, but with a newly developed V6 OM 401 producing 192 bhp, completing the OM 400 engine line. So there was a huge gap between 192 and 256 mhp, but customers demanded for 240 mhp engines, so it came to a throttled-down V8 OM 402 engine rated at 240 mhp (1424, 1624, 2224), the engine Stacy Keach had fitted in his NG 2224 truck in the 1981 movie Road Games. Then in late 1979, Mercedes introduced their new NG 80 range, featuring modified engines with more displacement, 1628 (OM 422 14.6 V8) replacing the 1626, and a throttled-down version 1625 replacing the NG 1624 V8. Full range of NG trucks with 250 mhp OM 422 V8 was 1425, 1625, 2225 and 3025. Then in late 1988, new SK truck range was introduced, 1625 was replaced by the 1726, 14.6 V8 now rated at 260 mhp, whilst 1729 had a new bigger OM 442 15.1 V8 290 mhp. Regarding the fuel pump, I'm not quite sure if different types were installed, maybe to some extent or for some markets, but I know that when adjusted properly, these engines really came to life, 300 mhp + can be reached with ease and without stressing the engine.

Stuff yer Scanias THAT'S a proper truck, my dad used to do Iraq and turkey in a 1980 V reg 1632. Sadly for me I was too young to have a go. I cut my teeth in the Derbyshire quarry's on 8 leggers mostly Foden's and D.A.F.'s with eaton twin splitters.
