My husband and I started decluttering our home this year and yesterday we both had the same thought. As we got ready to go to a Super Bowl party we said the house looks so neat we didn’t wanna leave 😂
I'm also, wanting to pay off my mortgage 55k in 3 years or less. I'm 73, purchased house with my adult son, and he has paid off his half a few years ago. We purchased home in 2018, Austin, TX
Gladys, it is a great goal!
So glad to read your comment; it is inspiring!
If more people would start their day listening to your podcasts, instead of the horrible News, we would all be better off.
Thanks for doing these!
The "one in, one out" rule has moved very well for us in keeping clutter out of the house. It makes you think twice about buying something new.
Absolutely!
@vcmomof3 Hubby and I have a rule of one item in, two items out... this means we have to really want the item and have to be ready to cull something somewhere lol. It helps when you are downsizing.
I need one in, two or three out , ha ha
Also seek God on the uncontrollable situations that were mentioned. 😊
Absolutely! ❤️
In conjunction with this, I have a goal of getting rid of 500 items in my apartment this year. Sounds like a lot, but really it's not. I'm writing everything down. What it was, where it went. Was it tossed? Donated? Given to a friend? By doing this and tracking it, I am much more conscious about not buying any other items. I am also making this year, THE year to start using up what I already have. I don't NEED more candles, lotions, or make up until I use up some of what I already have.
I think that minimalism and frugality are very very best friends. I started decluttering our big house about 8 years ago. Before that I joined the fly lady system which includes decluttering regularly. That led me to minimalism. I did several 40 bags in 40 days challenges and so on and so on. There were times of frustration because I had decluttered so much already but there was still so much left. And I was not alone by that time. My husband and two teens had to live with my new passion.
After all ....after a time my husband joined in....then my kids... they both live on their own now with less.
My husband and I sold our house....way too big for 2 people. We now have a tiny house. Every thing has not only its place..we use every item we own. We also recently did the Swedish death cleaning. So so good! Last year I saw my first video about frugal living! Our life changed even better. We paid off all our depths. We started budgeting. We now live so satisfied and happy owning as less ever. Sorry for any mistakes. All the best from Germany, Alice
I still declutter regularly. Still with the 15 minutes system from fly (finally loving yourself) lady. I decluttered the whole house like that. We also both have a capsual wardrobe.
Alice, this is fantastic! Thank you for sharing how your experience with minimalism and frugal living has changed your life 🤗
Cute sweater.😊
Thank you!
I want to be paying my basic bills and have an emergency fund. I want to not spend unnecessarily and have an easy to clean comfy simple homy space. I don't want to worry about the necessities. 🎉
This is a great goal! Stay focused and it will happen. Hugs 🤗
Praying for guidance helps
I have bipolar disorder, so I am not always fine to work. My goal is to have a financial cushion so I don't panic even more when I am not feeling well enough to work. So I can concentrate on getting better faster and not worry so much about putting food on the table.
Take things one day at a time dear, don't overwhelm yourself with things you can't control I will pray you get help, my daughter had that terrible bp and now I don't have her anymore 💔
My best friend is diagnosed with BPD.I miss her so much everyday. I feel what you feel.
I’m trying to save money and cut back!
Alisa, you can totally do this! 🤗
Yes! Stay at home and away from Amazon! ❤
That's my problem
Sara, try removing the app from your phone if it's there. It helps not to have it so easily accessible. 🤗
I love that, control the controllable! Thanks for your tips! I really like the idea of being at peace so you don't impulse buy!
Alisha, thank you so much! ❤️
We paid off our mortgage last fall! The feeling of freedom is amazing!
I agree about buying good quality items if you want something to last. My dad used to say:" you buy cheap, you buy twice". I don't spend much on my kids clothes as they grow fast, but I buy few items of hood quality for myself and wear them for years.
#10- I wish I had the money to open up my own self storage business. It seems everyone pays monthly rent on a storage unit! I cannot imagine paying for storage.
Easiest passive income. It’s been my dads dream for years but we never bit the bullet. Do it! :)
Our goal is mortgage….just 56k left to go….great content as always. Educational and practical. Thank you
Yes! Let's kick these house payments to the curb 🤗
Our goal is paying our mortgage…less than $6300! Keeping our foot on the gas, and a tight budget!❤🎉
Tressa, that is sooooo exciting!
My rule for online purchses is to put things in the cart, but then wait for two weeks before actually making the purchase. Most often, I end up deleting the things and purchasing only a few things.
That is a great rule!
Often the company will send you a deal on things in your cart if you don't buy them right away. So if you decide you really do need it, you'll get it a little cheaper.
@@brendamaun5455 yes but beware. Amazon plays that both ways. You put something in your cart and don't buy right away, and they will raise the price to make you think you better hurry up and buy before the price goes any higher. It will usually come right back down.
Am slowly going through clothes that I no longer wear/need do to weight loss. It’s been very cathartic to be honest!
Now I need to go through things in the kitchen cupboards to get rid of items I no longer use.
Going to have my granddaughters go through my jewelry to see if there is anything they may want so their parents won’t have to worry about that when I’m gone.
Sheila, this is wonderful! I am sure your granddaughters will love wearing your jewelry 🤗
I set a goal to be debt free in a 5 year period. Even with a major unexpected surgery I’m on track. Your videos (I’m binge watching) have helped to make it exciting again. So far I paid off our mortgage, our part of our kids college loans, credit cards, car loan, and some medical bills. It takes discipline for sure. I find seeing the debt come down on paper is very motivating. I love your videos. You are helping many people who’ve never learned any of these tips. I’ve implemented several of your ideas in the last couple of days that I never thought of. Thank you!
Inspiring.. I am still decluttering since my husband passed away 8 months ago. It's hard but every day I am looking around my house is it being used? And as you said "are you wearing it"? I have so many clothes it's crazy I am going through my closet again today and yes getting rid of clothes hangers and clothes that I do not wear often. Anna In Ohio
Anna, hugs to you 🤗
@@THEJENNIFERCOOK Thank you just took out a box of stuff and half a garbage bag full of clothes that "don't make me happy" off to Goodwill shortly. Anna In Ohio
So very sorry for your loss. Your comments on your decluttering are very inspiring to those who no longer have a husband.
Sending you peaceful wishes! My mom passed in Sept and my dad is going through the same thing. The house is nearly all her items! I’m encouraging him to make it his own. I’ve also donated what seems like 50 bags of her clothes. At first I kept them all, and now I’m keeping only the things I can wear and truly make me feel good. Peace be with you as you go through this process ❤
Thank you for another high quality video!
Rebecca, thank you for your kind words!
The most helpful way for me to stay debt free is the written spending/savings plan. Your budget will change each month so it needs to be updated each month. Additionally as you mentioned, some of the minimalist "rules" have helped not to buy items that would be quickly donated. I love the clean uncluttered look for my home but I am not an extreme minimalist list. Love your channel and sweater.
Fantastic reminders! The budget is key. Thank you so much! ❤️
New subscriber today and watched a second video of yours. Thanks for the great advice and entertaining delivery of key messages 😊
Welcome! Thank you so much 🤗
Your videos are always helpful to me 🙂 I unsubscribed to a ton of newsletters from Tupperware to Banana Republic... out of sight out of mind...
Yay! 🤗
My goal is to pay off our mortgage this year because I'm retiring on December 31st. Got 10 months to work a miracle. BTW - At Christmas I tried the tip about leaving things in your Amazon cart for a while. Had 2 items for my grown kids, and after waiting 2 weeks one of them had a $20 coupon to use! Score!
Robin, congrats on your upcoming retirement! Also, I'm so glad that tip helped 🤗
Ha... I just made that comment!
I work from home and minimized my clothing about 10 years ago. I don’t think I’ve bought anything since then. I didn’t have a lot of clothes to start with, and have even fewer now. I think I only use about two linear feet of my closet And have a couple of small drawers and the dresser for things that note don’t need to be on hangers. I never liked shopping and so I’m happy to receive a secondhand clothing. If it’s not something I choose to wear, I donate it to a thrift store.
"control the controllable"... thanks a lot that's what I needed to hear today😊Also, my goals: we paid off our house 2 years ago thanks to the Ramsey Baby steps. Our goals is to keep saving and avoid the lifestyle creep, keeping in mind that I tend to underestimate gas food -inflation...-in our budget. I would love if you could address lifestyle creep and also unrealistic expectations😂 in another video. Thanks a lot for what you do👍🏻😊
I love your ❤️ jumper Jennifer 🤗
I want to go on a cruise by myself in the new Studio Cabins, which can be quiet
inexpensive.
Thank you!!! Jennifer
This is what I've been looking for!! After my divorce, I went off buying things I didn't need. Now that I'm 55 , I'm planning on my retirement. Im planning on spending this summer cleaning up my house. I've become a hoder
My husband and I are focusing on paying off our house early and saving for our next car to buy it outright with cash. We're committed to saving more, not just for the sake of having extra but to ensure we have the financial flexibility for any unexpected expenses that come our way. We're approaching this with a minimalist mindset, only purchasing items that truly add value to our lives. This includes outsourcing recurring tasks like vacuuming, so we can focus more on what matters most to us.
Great reminders!
Thank you so much!
Wow 😅 I have been putting things in my kart and not buying for past 7 years .I wear clothes and have things from 15 years ago and use it daily the only thing I do is pay bills and necessary things as a single mom I have an income of 38000 working part time
Keep up the good work. You are doing hard things. You are an inspiration
Debt free besides the mortgage, going through a divorce with 2 children. Working on building my emergency fund, then paying mortgage off.
Marcia, those are great goals! ❤️
I like the video a lot. Before watching your video, I think minimalism is a bit extreme. But with your insights, I learned quite useful tips.
My Husband and I were
So careful with money while raising our Sons. Now they are on their own and I can go on 2-3 cruises a year.
That's wonderful!
Hey Jennifer great tips I’m trying to cut back on spending and building our savings , love❤ your sweater .
Beatrice, thank you so much! ❤️
I shop for fun--mostly clothes on a great sale -but I'm at capacity, so instead of shopping with my friend once a month, we have gone to the movies. We still spend $$ but less than shopping and nothing comes home.
❤️
I would say that I’m “minimalistic” but prob not hard core. But I use a LOT of their principles and am “on the path.” It feels good now and it’s much easier to clean, organize and keep tidy. If anything, it’s just too much house that I don’t really need. But of course, minimalism isn’t “one size fits all” and it’s not “strict rules.” The concept is really just be very intentional and don’t serve stuff, but rather have your stuff serve you. (Or as Dana K White said-find out what your personal clutter threshold is and respect the boundaries-which is basically everything must fit “comfortably” in the space provided for it).
The most poignant one for me was prob the “silent to do list” which is how all of our stuff “talks” to us. And some of that stuff is really saying ugly and toxic things to us (as it hogs up valuable space…without paying rent lol). So it’s not “deprivation,” it’s an invitation to more freedom. The main “rule” is prob just find out what works for you. Take it only as far as you want to go with it. And prob the main benefit for me has been mental health improvement and using a lot less brain power on mundane things (such as what to wear etc), which saves me mental energy that I can now allocate to more creative and important endeavors. 😬
My goal: A comfortable, downsized and simple retirement. (But first, move to the new state I want to do that in lol).
Love this! Thank you for sharing 🤗
@@THEJENNIFERCOOK Lol. Thanks! There are just so many unexpected benefits to minimalism that I really can’t get enough of it. It got rid of things like overwhelm, obligatory drudgery, greatly reduced depression and anxiety also. The other thing I forgot to say I guess was how you want to get your life “easier to manage with less stress” but you really can’t do that when you have too much to manage. It also has a magical way of clarifying who you really are and your own innate best way of being. It also “unburies” what are your REAL treasures so you can finally see what they truly are. It has changed me and most def has changed the way I think about “stuff.” I would highly recommend it to anyone. (Ha ha. And no. Everything doesn’t need to be white or pastel or cold and sterile and “sparse” looking either).
Personally, I prob have more clothing than most minimalists but it’s ok if it doesn’t stress me out or bother me. And only about half of that is “in my face” in the appropriate season. 😬 Right now it’s about 70-80 hanging items for all seasons including coats. 😅😅 (Just as one example. You don’t have to do numbers but I like it for some things. Did that with dishes also lol).
I do a wish list on Amazon that way people that know me can go on there and chose something that I want. Birthdays anniversary or special days …
I'm trying to put money in my savings account to save for college 🙏❣️
Love your videos
Regina, thank you so much!
I what to get myself out of debt and have some savings. Oh and declutter. I have a no buy on clothes and shoes this year. Use what I have. Thank you for all the tips, will be researching this video. Oh love your sweater
Great tips, Jennifer. Happy Valentine's Day💘💘 💘 💘
Thanks so much, Linda! Same to you ❤️
Hah! The shopping cart! I actually do this IRL. I "own" those cute items as I shop up and down the aisles. Then before I check out, it's decision time. Do I really want to spend my money on this or that or the other thing? As I eliminate items from my cart, I do put them back where I got them. Sometimes I completely empty my cart, because I really didn't need any of it! And still it was an enjoyable shopping experience. Also, this practice hones my shopping skills for the next time, so I might not put as many "want to haves" in my cart in the first place!😂
Hi Jennifer, Yay!! we are sitting at a little over 66,000 left to pay on mortgage. Its fun to hear the numbers! Thank you! 😊 Sher.
That is awesome!!! 🤗
I have collected heart heaped items all my life. I know my children won't want most of them. We also have many family heirloom antiques. How do I down size to a smaller home without getting g rid of precious things?
Buying quality does not necessarily mean spending the most for something. Before purchasing anything I read the negative reviews first. When the same problem is highlighted by many people I will pass on that item. I have been very lucky picking good appliances. My current stove has been serving me for 39 years. The dishwasher lasted 35 years and the refrigerator 33 years. The AC I just replaced was 29 years old and the furnace 25. Washers and dryers make it past 16 years. I have clothes in my closet that I have been wearing for 20 years. One sweater that I have was very expensive when my mother purchased it for me in 1963. It still looks good and wears like iron. I use a percolator coffee pot that was given to us as a wedding gift in 1967. All of my furniture is from the 1920s-1950s and belonged to my grandparents. When I shop I purchase things that I will love and keep for a long time. The one in one out rule doesn't work for me. It goes when it breaks, wears out, or is no longer of use to me.
My short term goal is to collect money for the trip to go and see my daughter and family in New Zealand. My long term goal is to collect money for retirement. Tc❤
Im trying to get out of credit card debt
Sara, stay focused, and you will get rid of that credit card debt! 🤗

There is a difference between essentialism and minimalism. It sounds like you were talking about essentialism
