- The Royal Navy's version of the Global Combat Ship is referred to as the Type 26 super frigate. The Type 26 has a broad appeal. Built for the Royal Navy, an acknowledged world leader in anti-submarine warfare, it will undoubtedly be a superb submarine-hunting platform and a worthy successor to the proven Type 23. The Global Combat Ship will also be fitted with guns of various calibres. and Sea Ceptor air-defence missiles launched via 48 vertical launching system or VLS canisters.

Just so everyone knows, the video here shows the BAE pitch to up-gun the ship. That pitch is incompatible with the Type-26 design because the British original design is smaller while Canada and Australia have opted to create a longer ship and upgrade them to dual platform AAW and ASW ships. It may be possible for both the Canadian and Australian variants to use the BAE config with 96 strike VLS. However, the current British design I hear wouldn't do it well because it would need a significant radar upgrade to fit the AAW role well. Though since Britian operates in fleets within a shared system, they could consider adding the strike length upgrade and depending on other ships in the fleet. Unlike other navies, the British variant is designed for pure ASW limited detachment while the Type 32's are the main fleet ship with the Type 45's covering AAW. Australia and Canada don't have capital ships and want their variant to be one ship that can bring every capability their nation might need.
Type 26 will arguable be the most advanced ASW out there due to it being the quietest ship ever built and the THALES passive sonar and it main role, the AAW is a secondary requirement so it can defend itself. The AAW will be and has always been performed by the destroyers such as the Type 45 in the RN. The others (Hunter and CSC) will be modified to an all purpose frigate with the 96 VLS as you mentioned hence the slight increase in length and upgrades to radar etc.

If they wanted a AA destroyer they should have developed a dedicated AA destroyer platform
They're trying to make it do too much and in turn reducing its cabalities. UK Has both frigates and destroyers meaning one can do AAW and the Frigate mainly doing ASW meaning both ships are doing their roles at maximum capability complimenting eachothger.

@@jpracing893I don't think Australia has the crew to oporate too many different platforms for different purposes without having too little capability of one or the other. Thei RAN is quite small. So supose it makes sense for them to build one that does it all.
The US used nothing but destroyers and cruises for decades. It's hard to find a frigate in the US navy. And if you look at the type 26 it's on par with destroyer size. I think Australia would find it better for them to have more AWDs and smaller corvettes for ASW. To have a greater capability and match for their budget and crew size. You don't need large ship for ASW role anyway.
It also comes down to the weponry Australia use also. The UK use sea ceptors as main armament. Australia use ESSM that has a greater range and speed. Australia also use their ships for multiple porpoise including offensive roles so they are eqwiped with SM2 SM6 and tomahawk missile including NSM for offensive capability. They have a greater area to cover than the UK also. And the Pacific Island nations rely on Australia for a defence.
Australia may go with 8 AWDs and 8 large corvettes for ASW. A total of 16 surface combating ships. + subs and a few mine hunters. If Australia built 9 type 26, that has a crew of destroyers. They will have limited crew left to oporate destroyers. Australia doesn't have national service. Their military is entirely voluntary. So, getting people to serve is difficult for them.
The ADF is very highly trained but very small. For a little tacker, they can punch above their own weight
Personally think that the multi mission bay should only be on the type 31's . On the type 26's, it should be replaced with a VLS system. For too many years, our warships have been underarmed!!
I have a feeling the UK will be working on building the next gen frigate before Canada even start building our Type 26 frigates. Really sad...

The Type 26 will be a great edition to the Surface fleet finally a war ship that actually has some punch ..
They should order at least 4 more I reckon whilst the shipyards and ship builders are set up for it

WW2??? HMAShips ran UK ships well past WW2!!! I served on them!!! Though the later ones got upgrades past basic UK standards!
For God sake.....why don't Navy ships have artillery size guns with smart munitions like the 155mm Bonus round? "BONUS is an artillery-launched, fire-and-forget munition capable of successfully combating any armored vehicle."
And what about a turret like the M1 tank turret which fires a variety of 120mm shells? It is more survivable than the Mk 45 naval gun as well.
Given the price, it better be good.

Even though Canada's type 26 frigate to modified version of the British type 26 frigate maybe Canada should have the British built are tight 26 frigates because we get them a lot faster because Urban Shipbuilding in Halifax Nova Scotia building them and it seems to take Irvin shipbuilding a long time to roll out military ships were building the Harry DeWalt Coastal Patrol Baseline it's like 2 years Fort Urban shipbuilding the roll one of them out so I can imagine what the type 26 frigates going to be specially the first one I guess Australia is dealing with some the same problems Canada is heavily modified versions of a British design ship because both Canada in Australia want to use the Aegis combat system good radar good weapons control system but we're trying to modify an American system to work on a British design ship

I didn’t realise BAY Systems won the contract for the Type 26, anyway I do wish these presentations would actually tell me something I didn’t know already, although I suppose getting any thing that makes any sense out of the MOD is asking too much. Hey they would only say it is classified anyway!😂🤕
With the US lacking shipyards, perhaps the UK could help build US frigates?

While in cases when humanitarian aid IS needed, there are far more innately suitable ships. An LPD or LHD, for instance.

You need to add to your manifesto about the state of our military. We need a huge investment in our military. The world is becoming a more dangerous place and we need to be able to defend ourselves home and abroad.
We need to start to build up our armed force now this includes manufacturing in this county’s of all type of military equipment from tanks, ships, aircraft, radar systems, ammunition etc etc.
This should also mean open up new coal mines for the making of high quality steel and open up new steelworks.
We have become to soft and woke this needs removing from our armed forces, we need to pay our armed forces a better wage if we want to attract more people to the forces.
The world now sees the British military as weak and this needs to change quickly, we should be on a war footing now to bring our military upto what it was in the 70/80s.
China, the Middle East laughing at us with our de-pleated forces, hell a third world country has more fire power than we now have that is a joke. We need to spend hundreds of billions now not next years or the year after now. Stop all over seas hand out and yes stop aid to Ukraine, so they are depleting our stock piles and taking our coppers that could be used on our military spending at home.
You want to create jobs start with the defence industry
Also stop immigration before we have a serious terror attack and start mass deportation now.
