Mercury Cougar 1974-1979 Why So Big ( 3rd gen -4th gen ) The 4th Gen Mercury Cougars where the best selling Cougars of all time. These cars are so underrated . Many people would pass over these cars, but in time these will be the cars to get.. Woods Brothers Racing team I give a lot of repsect to for 1 simple act. They helped a fellow racer WENDELL SCOTT tune his car. Seems like nothing, but to me it seem to be a lot at those times..
I still love these cars.
My first car was a Mercury Cougar Brougham Station wagon, with huge 460 Ford power plant...that a 7.5 liter for you kids out there!
All them there ankle biters.😂
lmao lol you tell them Jbone lol big block lol..
thnx bst i like the look back in time . i remember watching Sanford and son and mash as a very young kid👍
I watched Mash also lol I may have bto add that in the next video lol . Thank you for the support like always Alex... started to port heads today.. Not a easy taske at all.. I still do have the right tool, but f it .. I have to start
@@bstfordchannel923 take your time . i never did any porting. so your already ahead of me lol. i have installed 3 engines when i was younger on my Pontiac trans am (400) friends 65 comet (289) my camaro iroc replaced the 305 with a 350. and now 2 supercharger installs on my mustangs. and tons of basic mechanics. when u only have enough money for parts you learn how to save money to do it yourself or you don't get fast cars. when i was younger it took me 2yrs to save for my Pontiac motor i got rebuilt. i ate a lots of canned ravioli and tuna sandwiches to save!
@@alexk7286 Lol, I'm 46 Years Old Now, and I've done alot of Souping Up Old Cars and Engine Builds to make'em fast. I know what You mean about Eating Ravioli's and Tuna Sandwiches, You gotta Sacrifice when You don't make alotta money and You still like Hot Rods and Building Them. Hope Your Current Or Next Project Goes Well My Friend, Have A Great Day
Lmao this was so cool i laughed at the Shelby part. A very cool history lesson
I had to slip that in there lol.. Glad you enjoyed it bro
Nothing moves me like a Mercury! I especially love the 1978 Mercury Cougar XR7 midnight chamois because the deep blue color of the exterior is amazing. In the TV commercial for the 1978 Mercury Cougar XR7 midnight chamois; actress and model Cheryl Tiegs asks viewers this question in her sultry voice: "Isn't this *your* year to join the cat set?"
I been watching your channel and taking a trip back to the 70's. I owned 3 cars in the 70's, all used. A 70 Challenger 383 automatic, a 74 Mustang II V6 automatic and a 74 Datsun 260Z manual. Didn't get my first new car until l bought a 85 Mustang GT 5-speed. Lately i've been watching your videos and videos about Mavericks, Mustang II, Pintos, Cougars and Thunderbirds. I've always been a Ford guy but now I just a car guy. Thanks for the history bit about Wendell Scott.
thank you for this comment it means a lot... I am a car guy for sure.. I have to narrow down to a BRAND so I rolling with Ford as others do Chevy ( the engine only ) and Dodge . I do respect you line up of old cars 281 Cobra.. I like you style and respect your views... Thank you so much for checking video and supporting in that way. I am doing this with no IG or facebook crazy right..
@@bstfordchannel923 - just keep making good videos and I'll be there. Oh on Netflix there's a documentary on Willie T. Ribbs called "Uppity" it's really well done. I saw him race out in California.
Great video my first car was 1974 cougar xr7 351 c 2 barrel full power drove that car for 5 years it drove and road good I now have 1974 ford Torino starsky &hutch replica 460 v8 full power love that car .
WOW Howard you had the car I wanted .. This was a great story i really enjoyed you sharing this... Thats what make doing the video cool to do. the stories.. Thank you so much for this again!
I had a 1979 Mercury Cougar XR7, purchased at a bank auction in '81, what a sweet, sassy cat! Good, good memories! 🐈
i would really like to have one to show these cars can be very slick and cool ( with just the right touch ) of flavor
I bought a 77 XR7 recently needs work but has 351 M with Edebrock Manifold and 4 Barrel Carb
I was a 19 year old when the 74's came out. I had to remind myself not to be mad at these busses and boats Ford/Mercury was making because the 50's and 60's cars were cheap and that's what we drove. I had a '68 Cougar for a while.
ah man thank you for the story John.. You guys had all the cool rides.. look at us now
@@bstfordchannel923 You probably wouldn't mess with Crown Vics and such if you lived in the south or west. There are plenty of rust free or less rusted pre 80's rides down here that can be put back on the road, especially trucks. They're simple to work on and parts grow on every tree.
@@johnbroughton3401 you are correct in a way.. i would have SO MANY vic lol I need a 80s or 70s ride mid size . i have to venture out a little and get something
Very nice presentation. History is always cool to me.
thank you for this .. I was all over the place, but I had to tie it in together somehow.. So many places I wanted to go with the video
@@bstfordchannel923
At least you try. I have only lower end phones and no computer to edit with. I have only "experimental" videos. None very good in my opinion. I inexplicably have 136 subscribers. Mostly courtesy ones I would imagine.
I grew up not far from the Woods Brothers shop. They were about the nicest people you ever wanted to meet and talk about mechanical genius!
I really felt what you said i about them... I wanted to do a car done up in there styling cause I felt that THIS rare team was more than just racing...
My uncle had a red 77 T Bird with red vinal top and red interior! Bought it new and finally sold it in 93. Logged 410000 miles on it. It has the great little 3O2!!!!! Great video 👌
man that sound SWEET Kevin. your uncle was styling lol.. thank you for the support.. You should have shout out your uncle bro!
Man this was an excellent mini-Doc! You do a great job with these types of videos, and I'm not just saying that. You should be proud of yourself man. These were some great cars. I didn't realize that Mercury had changed the Cougar specifically to go after the Monte Carlo in 71. Real cool facts. Also I am not surprised at all that the Mustang did not sell as well back then. Ford had a lot of great options on the table back then, but more importantly, EVERYONE had a lot of great options on the table back then. Nobody interested in a sporty car would buy something with a small block V8 back then. Everyone knew that the big blocks were where it was at. Back then, there really was no other mentality besides "no replacement for displacement." I am just very glad that Ford at least kept the Mustang because had they trashcanned it and stuck with that Ford Probe, they would be a totally different company today.
thank you for this comment, It took a min to do, and watch the low video watch, but its comment like yours that make it all worth wild bro.. Thank you for this
You are so right there lol. We had some gooooood options during this with cars from all sides.. Now look at us not to many options now... SUCKs can even find anything good used or new.. Look were we at now its just bad
@@bstfordchannel923 We better get to liking pickups and SUVs huh? Chevy and Ford are both cutting their car lineups supposedly. I doubt they stick to that as wholeheartedly as they claim but we will see.
@@harrison4ever125 I was thinking that some how I have to make bootleg track chicken with a Ford explorer and make that a 5 speed or something with Coyote lol that would work lol.. Suv are the thing brother we can not shake that 1
@@bstfordchannel923 I don't see you being able to operate the clutch in a 5 speed Ford Explorer too good. Maybe a 2 door. I haven't driven a 2 door but I assume they have more leg room. I had a 2001 Explorer 5.0 a long time ago and that was a cool little SUV. I'm pretty sure I would hate to drive one with a 5 speed though. Been so long I can't really remember much about the leg room.
Straight up awesome video bruh 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
thank you for this sorry for the late comment youtube is wild.. i have to search for comments
Man its safe for work but still soft core, love this car , still havent been able to get with the fwd cub that ended the cougar.
Oh no!😅 I liked those FWD Cougars. Although they absolutely did not withstand the test of time. I once test drove one of those and it would break the tires loose switching from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd! Pretty cool car. Crappy quality though.
@@harrison4ever125 well you know more then me ive never even sat in one.
@@robertbelote5273 Probably will never have a chance to either. I haven't seen one in long time.
@@harrison4ever125 there are some still floating around but usually its some kid who spent to much money on the wrong stuff at (pats store) or Ebay.
I am not NOT with fwd cougar we shall slowly get to that 1... That one I can not dig why oh why they did that..
Glad you're showing love to the other fords! Best part about them now is that they are cheaper and more unique than the mustangs
sorry for the late comment.. yes brother i have to show love to other Fords its a must bro.. UA-cam made me search for this comment
Excellent video! My first two cars were 70s Mercs. I miss driving a land yacht every now and then.
i do miss it also in strage way, i would like a clean one just to chill in ( bump some tunes )
Nice presentation on the Cougars. In 1977, I bought a base model 2 door Cougar with the 351M for $4700. In the 70,000 miles I had it, it only need front disc brakes and rotors. To this day I have not owned a car that was so reliable and cheap to maintain. I had it looking good with ET mag wheels, Chrome side pipes and air shocks to lift the back end up! Hey, that was the look in the 70's! I traded it for a 1979 Mercury Marquis that was the worst, unreliable, expensive to repair car ever. Wish I could find my old Cougar back again.
I second this comment great video.
man i just saw this comment this is wild thank you so much for the detailed comment. i love the story. the car sounded sharp dude really. man i want one lol.. if you have time check out tis video ua-cam.com/video/CxudplMXLck/v-deo.html
I love this video you did amazing job. You could be a professor. And love the story of Wendell Scott. My uncle told me all about him when I was young
Wow, thank you!

I had a 1974 Cougar when I was in high school! Paid 500 bucks for it. It was the XR7 Model. Green interior leather seats too! She was a beast! Had the 351 Modified in it which was actually a 400 Modified. I miss that car. Thanks for this vid brother! Good memoriesfor sure!
Thanks for sharing! the memory are so sweet man i thought i was there.. sorry for the late reply man.. youtube bro
Wendell Scott sounds like Allen Kulwicki. He grew up in Virginia and he didn't want to have to work for an overbearing boss. Allen Kulwicki drove his own car, was his own mechanic and even was his own crew chief. Independent minded people find a home in America, thank God for Wendell and Allen! Without them life would be less interesting.
very true, but Allen had it slightly better i am sure of it.. same mind set, but Wendell was a bootlegger you can not get more Nascar than that..
@@bstfordchannel923 Allen had it much better, I wish I'd have known about Wendell years ago! Thank you.
Wendell had a 71 Montego NASCAR car.
A cuz thanks for the great video, to me the best couger ever was the 1967 to 1969, why they kept this car bigger and bigger can't say, Ford really messed it up!!!
they did but thats was the times everything big look at music same thing and fashion to lol ...
3:03 Carol edit. 💀💀💀
ahh I got it right 1 take this time ..
What a tank - the only thing missing was the Canon and tracks.
But there was tons of room under the hood for a 460, and we did that a few times.
Nice and luxurious with the 460 punch.
you guys did all he cool things back in the day... we are scratching the surface
Lol, I Love The " Love Boat Them " playing in The Background Music.
lmao i had to add that lol... i have been wanting to buy on of these
A bit of vintage trick for those old land yachts to squat and go for this very gen of kitties and t-birds , put 1991 escort coil springs on the top of the rear axle (weld perches for the springs ) in addition to your inherited rear suspension and it will perform as intended but will not give at all when you attempt to put the pedal down to the asphalt. Also a bored and stroked 460 can't hurt either lol Edit: We so vested in our modes of performance are brothers and sisters of the wheel . With it we express ourselves and share our soul to infinity's tapestry of the human condition to attempt to explain life and out works to the next , Godspeed,my beautiful people .
sorry for the late reply Metal bob i was working on the Maverick here ua-cam.com/video/0JweZqQb0oU/v-deo.html thank you for the support and comments brother
This some Huggy Bear shiz.
it was lmao for sure lol
Great video! I have a 1977 Cougar XR7 400cu
you have the big boy Cougar very rare I wouldnt mind having that version lol.. How long you had it ?
I had a thing for the cougar for a while. it's just so damn long..."thats what she said", cant imagine racing that thing but people did.
cougars are sweet i seen a Ltd ll just the other day. thing is huge lol
@@bstfordchannel923 thats what she said 🤣
@@maxie9506 i walked right into that 1 lmao
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Just want to mention the red car between 7:05-35 was the T-Bird counterpart, not the Cougar.
Ford was at a crossroads for '74 on both the Mustang and the Cougar, where they would no longer be counterparts of each other. Although I really like the '74-'76 3rd generation well enough, there were still a lot of styling ties to the Ford Torino/Elite, which I also like and still do. The '77-'79 though, were more upscale in styling sharing more looks-wise with Lincoln, not Ford.
Looking forward to the next Cougar generation video! 👍
thank you for this yes i will make the next gen .. i just have to sit down with myself and nerd out
@@bstfordchannel923 Awesome! Will you cover up until the 8th Generation Cougars too? (99-02)
79 cougar was a beautiful car
it really was i was eyeing up one, but no call back.. so we are back to crown vics
Man l love that cougar I had a 1977 xr7
I was try to buy one but the guy is a truck driver in and out of state.. i want the car bull crapping around
The 400 C.I. engine was not discontinued for 77, and I believe it was available through the 79 model year. I think you're mistaking to 400 for the 460. The 460 was dropped at the end of the 76 model year. One of my 77 Cougar wagons has a 400.
thank you for that Tom... It happens when you read and the info is wrong vs KNOWING and being there during that time owning one of these cars... Thank you for this!
Neat video. Even a little funny.
Glad you enjoyed it! i was just having some fun on the down time of building
@@bstfordchannel923 Can't beat that.
I'de have to say just like the big Yacht boats same with these big cars that cruise it fast, comfortably and big time crash suviability with lots o power. I like the station wagons like the Vista Cruise, I think. It had windows all round the raised roof so the kids would look out at the world zippin by. I want a big station wagon with big power and thick side panels with vista windows for me to look out while drivin fast, oh yea. lUXURY
back in the day i hated the station wagons
best cougar years
I can say that, but 1st gen gets all the glory though
I blame Disco music for the big cars in the early 1970s.v(jk) Actually the 1970s was the decade of luxary. Everything was big and loud. Cars, music, and clothing. It's like people wanted to forget the serious 1960s and went to extreme excess in the 1970s. Kids who drove muscle cars in 1960s grew up, had families and decided bigger was better.
you are speaking 100% FACTS . everything went big from bellbottoms to to cars.... It was great time for things but also they seen that people where a bit more together ( being close ) and they found out break -up the family and you can control the mases ( look where we at )
Should have kept Montego name for the base 1977-79 Mercury mid size cars
I am guessing the name Montego did not ring off even when they did in the 2000s it still did not jell well with sales
Have you seen Batistina Offical channel ? If not check out the 78 Maverick.
never heard of that i am going to check it right now, Batistina Ofical channel ( 1 f ) lol... very cool car VERY high end.. Be Honest its a VERY cool car look at it DEEPER its missing something or certain parts where over done.. SWEET CAR, but look at it from a different eye
I own one right now and looking for parts for it
i love these videos. we should never forget history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendell_Scott
thank you for the support and the love Carl. The plans is to push this name and another out there. I want to build a car inspired by him in some kind of way..Its time now and do more with less
My spoiled ass older sister got not one, but two late 60s cougars and fucked both of them up- then she got a 72 LTD 🤣 me? I started off with a 70 olds cutlass and got everything I had after on my own.... it was the time when all the muscle cars were being either junked, traded in for more fuel efficient cars, or just sitting on the side of the driveway, in that spot where the non running cars sat... saw a lot of pintos and corvairs sitting in those spots back then also.. we're talking late 70s early 80s.👍
its like that sometimes... the girls get spoiled cause they have been taught to find a man to TAKE car of them.. Now the less attractive women WOTK there ass off to grab a mate and the better life with one.. Its sucks that story of all the muscle cars being junked.. sounds like cash for clunkers on a lower scale.
@@bstfordchannel923 lmao she eventually found "that guy", but this was high school...I couldn't drive yet- but I liked that Ltd.
Those retractable lights on the Cougars drove her nuts!- they never worked!🤣
Man it was a boat compared to the first Cougars.
the Cougars where a town this gen was a planet.. it was smooth ride though
These cars arent that big interior wise and actually have a decent turning radius compared to some newer crossover bs we have now. What makes them a land yacht is the hood which you get used to after 5 minutes of driving. The thing that pisses me off the most is they pretty much killed the Cougar with these later models as much as I love them they were a joke compared to the 60s early 70s cougar

The Chrysler New Yorker was never a #1 seller. In 1971, the Chevy Impala/Caprice line was.
this great info I can show you a few area to show this was true. Just for 71 not over all sales not saying the popular choice just sales for that 1 year. Show me your findings and i will show you mine Tomcat.
