This was a Friday night game live on BBC, City were pretty much already out of the running for promotion. Legend as it Chelsea brought a huge mob of lads and took over most of the City pubs, the Guvnors tried mustering a crew but no one was up for it as Chelsea were so mob handed. So it turned out a lot lager was supped and no agro. City Chelsea games in subsequent years would go down in folklore as bloody hooligan battles. Especially the FullMembers Cup Final.
I remember it well as a City Fan,it was Madness in Manchester that night,Chelsea were all over the centre of Manchester that friiday night, most of the pubs taken over by Chelsea, also mad out side the ground running battles everywhere. Everywhere everywhere.
I was there in the stand on the side the cameras were. It was full of Chelsea. The noise was incredible. Great day! Almost matched by going up there a few years later in the second division and doing City 3-2 to pretty much secure the league.
Crazy day alround, 63 now, 24 then, took it to them big time, respect to the 30 or so city lads that stood at the back of the stand, proper punch up, no weapons, the good ol days
Was on the away terrace, we outsang the City fans all game. It was a good trip. I remember stopping for a pint near to the M6 and the Man Utd fans in the oub said that having Chelsea back in the top flight was a good thing. 2 weeks later we won that league
Beautiful Beautiful this match!! As a north italian i loved this English Football of those times (real Football English) now its the best championship in the world but i preferred before, and it has lost its charm❤❤
Old heads have told me Chelsea brought a mob of 2000! Not fans a mob of 2000!! The biggest mob to ever come to the beautiful Maine Rd.. Fucking miss Maine Road..
If you read the book written by Mickey Francis , old school City top boy he says Chelsea had 7,000. there that night , he also states that it was all lads. .....most of us were in the stand beneath the camera ... I’m wearing a Yellow Pringle in the mini pitch invasion when Pat Nevin scored ...amazing night !!
Clever goal from Pat. He was a revelation that season and in the previous game against Leeds he set up a goal for Kerry with a dribble that George Best couldn't have matched. I don't blame him for leaving as the clueless Hollins and Walley (well named there) didn't want him.
Cardiff away this season was Chels allover Ninian Park and the sheep shaggers just stood and watched......Remember that good ol saying "SPEEDIE,DIXON 1-0" lol. In this game it was "SPEEDIE,DIXON 2-0!, CMONS THE CHELS.

Typical Chels.. take 7K up north.. & struggle to bring 2K across London to West Ham..
Never seen as much crowd trouble as this game. Absolutely incredible. After the game round the back on the Platt Lane stand was mayhem.
