Absolutely love this movie. I think it's really cool you spent time talking about the ending theme ballad, and influences. As someone who lives in Atlantic Canada, I didn't realize the Appalachian Mountains extended up into Canada, had only heard about it in regard to the US. I always thought the ballad had strong Scottish and Irish musical influences, as this region had a lot of settlers that have influenced the culture here. I enjoyed this original movie so much that I bought the remake when it came out (nowhere to rent at the time) and after watching it I just straight up through it in the trash, lol. At that time I had a big physical media collection and it was totally out of character for me to toss this new DVD I just bought, but I couldn't even imagine me ever wanting to rewatch it. Really enjoyed the video!
What I learned years back when watching these slashers, don't mess with the blue collar workers. The killer may not be supernatural, but they can be VERY strong from years of labor.
I’ve personally found that the Canadian tax shelter slashers tended to be the best of the genre. They were a lot more welling to be about something outside of body counts. The remake I don’t remember much about outside of it having the most gratuitous nude scene I’ve ever seen a movie. And considering the genre we’re talking about that says a lot.
If the underlying themes and ideas were explored in other stories and settings, My Bloody Valentine could have kicked off a truly excellent anthology film series.
This has been a favorite of mine for a while now! As soon as I saw you'd made a video about it, I thought, "Of course, you did." I saw the remake first, as well, but I saw it on my birthday at a movie theater/bar in college. A theater full of drunk students watching a 3D slasher film was one of the best movie-going experiences of my life! Another great vid, Matt!
The addition of discussion and disection of the murder ballad has elevated your look on MBV above any other exploration I've seen. Long and short, another great video!
Thanks for this Matt Also Valentine's day is my birthday and i will be turning 30, so I can't wait. I was originally dreading the big 30 but now i think I'm fine with it. I can't wait to see more of your great content
One of my favorite slashers, I try and watch it every Valentine’s Day. I even enjoy the remake, it isn’t perfect, but it has an “over the top, late 2000’s time capsule” charm I enjoy
I’m a big murder ballad fan. I grew up listening to old folk and outlaw country. I’m still a sucker for songs that tell a story. Great modern example of the genre still being alive and well is “Down the River” by Chris Knight.
I always say, My Bloody Valentine is the second best Canadian Holiday Horror movie, because Black Christmas exists! What MBV has going for it though is how unapologetically Canadian it is, compared to Black Christmas, which tries to obscure it's Canadian production. Also, love the Prine shout out!
The remake has that infamous "We twisted the twist!" problem where you just forced it so hard that it broke apart and became stupid. So many movies try to do that, and God I fucking hate it. lmao
Lol I think the remake’s twist is really silly as it’s just the opposite of the original since really only TJ and Axel are the big suspects aside from possibly Harry returning again (till the reveal at the close of the film). If anyone likes it, that’s fine as all are entitled to their opinion
Very realistic slasher since it feels like a workplace drama. There is no supernatural explanation needed as to why one man snapped and went on a rampage.
Great video! The original MBV is definitely held in very high regard in my household. Both my wife and I are huge fans of it and we echo many of your feelings and observations on it. We also loved the remake….sure that fake out twist is pretty lame, but at that point, I’d been along for the ride since the opening credits, so I was all in. And yes, the 3D was pretty awesome in the theater!
Love the classic film, 3D film was so bad it's good to me. I enjoyed how 2009 it felt. The Winchesters were having the time of their lives playing the villains and final boys of their respective horror slashers. Kinda miss that era of horror and TV colliding.
Funny thing is that I first heard about my bloody Valentine from the remake until years later found out about the original film. I never got a chance to see it but this video really got me interested to see the film. Thanks for letting me know how unique this film was compared to other early 80s slashers at the time. Btw I think the killer having a miner's outfit is a fantastic idea.
I have loved this movie for years. My mothers side originated for ma small Canadian mining town, that is extremely similar to the setting of this movie. Since I've never been, I feel like I'm closer to my ancestors watching this. Last Halloween I finally got he uncut release and its so good!
I’ve always wanted a harry vs the killer from valentines the guy in the cherub mask like the bully that poured punch on him now live in valentines bluff but I don’t know maybe harry can be a zombie or it’s axel again but all that Matters is that both of them want to kill them and they brawl
I love the original film. Couldn’t get on with the remake, but I see why some people like it, it wasn’t _absolutely awful._ Unlike Prom Night, what a joke! 😂
The original movie is a cult classic everyone should see. Love the Canadian setting, the miner costume is iconic & the uncut kills are brutal as hell! It’s too bad they never got to make a sequel, but that’s okay in my book
I saw the 2009 film first. Thinking it was really generic and trying too hard with it's gore (and I wasn't all that keen on the era of 3D movies). A friend recommended the original and I'd agree it is a far better film.
I never saw the edited version of it I only saw the version with the gore put back in but you could tell when it was that footage and not cause it's not as good film quality. Honestly I just don't think I'm ever going to watch the censored version cause why would I?
When it comes to the 2000s remake era, Jared Padalecki clearly got the better remake to star in. Like, Friday '09 has problems, but I find it enjoyable (take the parts of the first four Fridays that work, scrap the rest, genius). That said, both are still better than the atrocious remake of the Stepfather from the same year.
You’re quite unkind about the remake! I found it a well made slasher, decently acted….and, as I listened to the commentary on my DVD copy, you are wrong about your claim it was all filmed on sets…almost everything was also a location shoot, in a small town outside of Pittsburgh, apparently….i also did very much love the original, also….and thought this was one of the very best of the ENDLESS remakes…
What's your favorite holiday horror movie (excluding Halloween)?
Silent night and black Christmas
I would say My Bloody Valentine is my favorite one off slasher that didn't have a sequel
Black Christmas. 74 version obviously
Silent Night Deadly Night and Night of the Comet ☄️
My Bloody Valentine (1981), Krampus, or Gremlins.
Too bad no sequel. Oh well. At least Axel went on to work as an animator for the Simpsons and Family Guy. I can see why he won't come back.
Love the original and glad it never got a sequel or sequels. A true one and done. The remake is a guilty nostalgic pleasure of mine too!

Really enjoyed the video!
I had family decades back that worked pipelines waaaayyyyyyyy up north in Canada. Very harsh conditions. This and The Grey reminded me of them.
Yay. Content is always impeccable, Matt Draper. I'm ready for you to deepen my appreciation of yet another childhood trauma.

Particularly TERROR TRAIN!
Happy Birthday to me

I love My Bloody Valentine as a kid. I was so excited for the 2009 remake. I thoroughly enjoyed both. Didn't think it needed a sequel.
Arguably the best Valentine's day horror movie. I would love to see more reviews of Canuxplotation movies
The remake was filmed in my town, it's always been cool to see local spots in a movie.
I'm really not a fan of Valentine's Day as a holiday but I love these two movies. Slashers are where it is at.
Thank you Matt! Remember watching this at a sleepover for the first time on cable. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
The addition of discussion and disection of the murder ballad has elevated your look on MBV above any other exploration I've seen.
Long and short, another great video!
Still can't wait for the day when you do godzilla minus one
Just waiting on an official blu-ray and digital release
Thanks for this Matt
Also Valentine's day is my birthday and i will be turning 30, so I can't wait. I was originally dreading the big 30 but now i think I'm fine with it.

Happy birthday!
@@MattDraper thanks work has been wonderful

Kate Mccannon by colter wall is a pretty good one too. And I think Live Oak by Jason isbell could count too
Jensen getting to do the remake was the one good thing about the 08 writers strike. He makes the movie
Even though Valentines Day isn’t my cup of tea, it always puts a smile on my face to see my favorite horror movie get some love around the V-day
I always say, My Bloody Valentine is the second best Canadian Holiday Horror movie, because Black Christmas exists! What MBV has going for it though is how unapologetically Canadian it is, compared to Black Christmas, which tries to obscure it's Canadian production. Also, love the Prine shout out!
My all time favorite slasher!
Definitely one of my favorite holiday specific slashers. Canada didn't mess around while making this. Too bad the reboot is kinda lame.
Love that this is filmed in little ol' Sydney Mines but the movie isn't really celebrated by the province.
The remake has that infamous "We twisted the twist!" problem where you just forced it so hard that it broke apart and became stupid.

I saw the movie in 1981 and i thought it was great.. And even today it's in my top 10 movies.. And I appreciate you for keeping it alive..
5:30 Phantasm (2?) Theme in the background!
Good ear! Yep, it's 2
@@MattDraper Absolutely love it

Mention of protest songs immediately followed by a pic of Woody Guthrie? Matt, what a based decision 👍

absolutely one of the best 80s slashers & a proud Canadian horror classic
caught that hyper light drifter music, nice touch man

Underated in the slasher genre part horror part folk tale. The original is a classic. The 2009 remake had its moments
My all time favorite 80s slasher movie. ❣️🫀⛏️💀
I love the original film. Couldn’t get on with the remake, but I see why some people like it, it wasn’t _absolutely awful._ Unlike Prom Night, what a joke! 😂
How did I not see this upload coming? lol
Fun fact the Mine that was used in the 2009 remake it is now a haunted house called The Haunted Mine in Tarentum PA
I would love to see your take on my soul to take. The reboot and the original
Cape Breton horror! Oh yeah! Still one of the greatest slashers ever
I’m very angry I didn’t never made a sequel Valentines genius
I like both. I knew about the remake first. It took me a while to appreciate the original one 😅
The original movie is a cult classic everyone should see. Love the Canadian setting, the miner costume is iconic & the uncut kills are brutal as hell! It’s too bad they never got to make a sequel, but that’s okay in my book
The original and uncensored with the footage added back..My Bloody Valentine is the best slasher of all time
What a romantic video
My bloody valentine is my favorite horror movie but you’ve got to watch the restored version
My Bloody 3D Valentine ❤
3D power ❤
Woah
oh I thought you were going to talk about the band, damn my mistake
all we can hope for is it gets sent for video game adaptation jury duty or harry/axel gets added to dead by daylight
That Hollow Knight music tho >>>

The worst thing a slasher film can have is a big budget.
Eyy
20:45 of course they goose'em a little, it's an old circus term
What a crop! That’s a big crop!
Can you review Batman Zero Year next!
Hollis was the best character.

Did you see the sequel fan film valentine bluffs?
I love the movie, Valentine, the most greatest ever very angry
The fact that she dated not only one but two minors

THE 2009 3D REMAKE OF THE 1981 SLASHER FILM WAS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL STARRING JENSEN ACKLES AS THE MINER'S SUCCESSOR, TOM HANNIGER! 👹❣️🩸⛏️☠️🎥🎬😱
