    I remember back in the 80's I had one of those on my old Firebird. I didn't realize they were back again. Sounds like a vacuum cleaner lol. I didn't expect it to flow that much air from the sound of it. Thanks for the informative video.

    Thanks Eric. Seems to be the norm from manufacturers - no rebuildable/replaceable pieces on parts. Buying complete replacements is causing sky-high repairs and angry customers. You end up doing more explaining than fixing, sheesh!

    Another great video, Eric. Very rare to see you use your digital test light. Good to see a use for it. Sure wish those scan tools were more affordable but that's how they keep you in business. Thanks for throwing out some quick ideas on how to get some results without one. Makes for a super video!

      +South Main Auto Repair Yeah, I've got four cars. An 08 Ody Touring I bought brand new (149K,) 98 Nissan 200SX (125K ), 2002 GMC Sierra (52K,) and 2011 Jetta (38K,) and do ALL my own work and enjoy it. I'm big on preventative maintenance. Tires and recalls are about the only time I take them to anyone for anything. I've even gotten pretty good at string alignments! I've never been happy after getting my cars back after the dealers have worked on them, for warranty and simple recalls. I'd bring my car to your shop any day, though.
      I've considered the Autel after watching you work your magic on it but it's still just a bit too expensive to justify for home use and seems like I read they are $20/mo for subscriptions. I have a little Innova 3130 scan tool I bought shortly after buying my Ody that does live data and I've gotten by with it so far. Your lift, your Autel and your Verus make me jealous every time I see them!

      Haha sounds like you have a pretty good fleet there. I know a few guys have mentioned that when they bought a scan tool that that they went in on it with a few buddies and they all split the cost and shared the tool when needed. Didn't know if maybe you had some other gear heads you could or wanted to do that with ya know. Any how just an idea :)

      +South Main Auto Repair I wish! That's a super idea. Unfortunately, I moved to Charlotte, NC from Eastern Oregon 3 years ago and I live in a neighborhood where nobody does ANYTHING for themselves. I do EVERYTHING myself and they always look at me in amazement when I'm digging my own drainage ditch in the front yard or simply fixing my own sprinkler head in the front yard. I just grew up that way. My dad never hired anything out. Until I saw him get old and lose the ability I never saw him take a car to a shop. He couldn't afford it. He did everything from successfully rebuilding his own engines and even an automatic transmission out of a 65 Ford, to major house construction. Nobody does that stuff themselves today. People don't know how to fix things. It's sad. There's a rush you get when you find a problem and fix it that many people have just never experienced. You're right I gotta find some local gearhead friends!

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  8 років тому +1

      Oh I hear ya man! I always try to do what ever I can myself and it is sick that they are taking all of the shop classes out of schools now days to. No more shop, no more welding, no more wood working.... our local school says it is because it is just to dangerous for kids haha. The future does not stand a chance. They are to worried about whether or not everyone can use the transgender bathroom bs than helping raise these children into men and women,

Also have 882 bare heads, non EGR cast 4bbl manifolds, Rochester Quadrajet carbs. Not to far away in PA so would even deliver.

    I have a 2010 Malibu with the 2.4L, I have a this brief noise on cold starts. After research I've learned that it is an air pump (I'm assuming it's the AIS) that is required for emissions in some states. In your opinion does this sound accurate to you and if so is there a way to quiet it down? Thank you in advance.

    Gah, SAI issues are always fun, and I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with 'em. On the upside, they're usually enough of a pain to diagnose and/or repair that a lot of people throw away older cars. I flip cars every so often, and it's a great way to get a project car cheap! On the other hand, sometimes SAI repairs can get expensive or labor-intensive. At least the labor is free when I'm working for myself!
    Rather annoying when they combine sensors and solenoids like this, though.

    got gas, parked the car in some gravel, started it up and got this code.
    an 09 cobalt base xfe model, opened the lower pump seemed fine. then opened that rear pump valve and lots of carbon. did some diesel injection. on first start up i can hear one of the pumps.
    does the diaphram rip? or does it just get stuck open and wedges itself from moving? also there is a button on the unit, i dont know what it does or if its just a one way valve. can you cut the old unit in half?
    symptoms are choppy drive at steady throttle

      Speaking of Honda timing belts (I know, not really,) Eric, have you seen these Lisle Honda Crank bolt impact sockets? It's super thick and heavy. The extra mass of the socket is supposed to knock the crank bolt right off with an impact. I've heard people rave about it on the Ody forums. I didn't know about it when I did my timing belt a couple years ago. Wish I had. It was a starter bump trick that got it off for me.

      No........Unless it was a real interesting video.
      Never thought I would see the day that Americans were to Lazy to drive there own car.
      Always wondered about the Ins aspect, Now I know before you can turn it on, you have to accept terms that you must have both hands on wheel, and pay attention at all times, or you cant turn it on. Auto Pilot my A**.

      Charles Miller Think of the benefit, program the car to take your kids to school and bring them back. Maybe even have the car come back home so you can use it. You would not even need DD after a nite out.

      I would like to see cars, with a built in troubleshooting computer, whenever your having a problem, it just tells you in plain language whats wrong, and how to repair. My old 82 has a ladies voice that tells me when my door is not totally closed

    Remember the good old days when cars didn't have pointless plastic engine covers? Lol. Wonder how much time you've lost over the years to removing and putting these dang things back on!

    I was working on a chevy truck with the same system. The intake fresh air hose was in a location that every time you drove thru a puddle of water it would suck water in. So I moved to to a higher location.

    What actually this whole sistem is for? Seems ridiculous

    • @celeron55
      @celeron55 8 років тому

      +Stjepan Đopar It seems to pump air into the exhaust in order to make the catalytic converter burn more of the unburned fuel when it's running rich at startup. Or something like that.

    • @frosty98412
      @frosty98412 8 років тому

      +celeron55 Nah, that doesnt make sense since Eric said that it connects to the head of the engine...well, I bet that it has to do something about that ecology junk

    • @celeron55
      @celeron55 8 років тому

      +Stjepan Đopar Well, the exhaust starts from the head and it's easier to bolt something to the head and have an extra channel in there than directly to the exhaust manifold.

      +celeron55 I dont think so...maybe Eric will answer

      +celeron55 Yep. That's what it does. Just more emissions crap....
