This went on and on. TL;DR - Tried to convince himself he wanted a new radio because he got bored with the present one and needed redundancy - basically he had to create a man-reason. I relate.
I have both and actually prefer the TX16s for helis (I have some old flybar type in my fleet) but you can’t beat the range of the 900mHz that the Tandem series offers.
@@mrskyrydr You have to understand his scenario. Most sane people who fly turbines or other very expensive models require redundancy. Only two transmitters that I know of have this capability. Jeti and Frsky. The way Frsky redundancy operates is superior to Jeti Duplex. I have mad respect for the TX16 but he made the right choice for his situation.

@@williamhammond3998 You should check out the Radiomaster Nomad module and ELRS Gemini mode, it has dual band on both frequencies (or same with different channel) providing redundancy. They also have redundancy receivers with two radios or you can even bind two different receivers at the same time to one model
These RadioMaster radios punch way above their weight. I'm using the Max. Fact remains that their hardware is exceptionally reliable, and if you're looking to match that with a control think then you probably won't find anything better that the ELRS Gemini protocol.
@@tdogrc ELRS Gemini uses frequency hopping on two discreet channels at different frequencies to further reduce the likelihood of losing connection due to interference. It's pretty damn clever. Once RadioMaster start releasing hardware for that you're golden. As it stands their full size Ranger module is capable of 2+ watts.
I totally don't understand why you think a radio that has proven itself to you as being reliable is unreliable because of it's perceived lower initial price tag or the fact that you've had it disassembled only for cosmetic reasons. Honestly it just sounds like you're trying to justify it to yourself. It's fine to say you just wanted the new radio.
Let me just put it this way, its never failed, its always provided good feedback and its built confidence in using it. Ive had and seen high end spectrum and jr radios fail in flight due to the dumbest things. From brownouts on receiver packs to power switches going open due to cold weather change.. I keep my tx16 because i can assure the radio is up to date, i can buy the parts if something is going south, and to top it off, they've been constantly improving the software and hardware over the years. I have $3000 planes on it and small 1/2A planes on it. If i need to see a screen while flying, im not really flying and enjoying it. Id rather trust the remote and enjoy the flight.
Radiomaster don't write the software, none of it, except the uC that does the chicken feet. You're confusing Radiomaster with OpenTx, EdgeTx, Multi 4in1 and ELRS ... all open source and community driven.
I’ve had some issues with my TX16s where I get the RSSI messages and sluggish response but I’ve never lost a plane. A few years ago I did the R9 module which has much longer range however it’s a branch from the standard OpenTX/EdgeTX and it required a simple but hand soldered mod on the main board to get to work. I bought a Frsky X18 but set it aside while I continued using the TX-16s but recently grew tired of the frustrating ELRS upgrade and am in the process of switching to using my X18. The X18 or any of the Tandem protocol FRSky radios have 2.4GHz and 900mHz bands which I feel is the ideal redundancy. ELRS can get range but it does so by using much higher broadcast powers.
My firend flies turbine jets with his , price doesnt make things better , Just cause it cost $200 doesnt make a bad transmitter . Spending more on a transmitter doesnt make it better

I've got a FrSky T9 Lite, and I'm thinking of upgrading to an X18, so I'd be interested in hearing how you get on. If I'm honest, it's because I want more bells and whistles - if I crash my plane it's almost certainly pilot error rather than any issue with the kit. I wonder, if you were being honest, how much that was a factor in your decision?
I’ll keep you posted. Other than the redundancy it doesn’t have that many more bells and whistles over the TX16S so I wouldn’t say that was a factor (although I did mention there was some “man maths” involved 😂). You’re right about pilot error, I’ve only ever lost a plane either to a mistake or losing orientation (and once because an insect gave me a nasty bite while flying). I personally know a friend of mine who has lost an expensive F5J composite glider due to a defect in his Powerbox CORE radio. Just because a piece of equipment is stupidly expensive doesn't make it "better" or worse in terms of reliability.

I like the video and thank you for sharing and taking your time to make the videos, the chip shortage has hit the Radiomaster TX16s and I am said that it has happened. I know I have at least spent 60+ Hours researching all that I could, read the manual from front to end. An after all that work, I came up with the Chip the driver the 4 in 1 Module, when a user gets a new Radiomaster that on Module set up you chose Multi and the protocol you want to use, and it states NO Telemetry Detected, you have the new mainboard. So what does that mean? Well for me I going to buy the old transmitter for parts and the old mainboard. The B chip runs the 4 in one Module, and that is what the Firmware is running. So that all cool but the 8 Chip is now running the 4 in one Module, now we have a problem.
Not selling mine. They are not perfect, I don't like how the switches stick out everywhere to catch on everything and it's a bit of a chunky boy, *but*, I've put too much into adjusting the gimbals... just... right.

I bought the $900 Spektrum ix14, didn't feel like its worth the price, returned it. Then got the FrSky x20s blue version $500 with $40 4-in-1, I love the look and feel but not sure if i want to keep it or get the RadioMaster Max. I will fly it and try it out with my AeroScout with Spektrum receivers. Ill look at RadioMaster Max next $379.
I fly expensive helicopters with my rm tx16s. Never had a problem with it and it's one of rhe first ones so it's a couple of years old. But ok the frsky is also a great radio i think
The Radiomaster is capable, but i understand the extra layer of safety a tandem system will give. A good and understandable Choice you did there in my opinion.
Beautiful remote and your logic makes a lot of sense, but it seems to me that you put a lot of emphasis on reliability and how expensive the models are. With the same logic it doesn't make any sense to buy anything less than Futaba or Jeti. I know you addressed it but still it seems very inconsistent. Anyway, interesting video and commentary.
My opinion: It's mainly about range. Of course duribility with reliability are related to cost. I refer to the youtube video made by The Lighter Side Of RC - ultimate radio test. FrSky was the winner without mods. Me and my flying buddy both own Taranis radios with Open TX programming. I should add that they didn't test every radio, leaving out the ONLY radio I use on Nitro planes - the Aurora 9. In my experience, the Optima receivers have best range and can take the beating of a 2 stroke engine. I only use FrSky in my electrics. Opinions on Radios will overwhelm a video like this. BUT I like your channel - you have some good Nitro/Balsa vids.
You should have put a 2.4G 1W ELRS module instead of using 915Mhz, 915Mhz introduces noise to the servos and damages them in a short period, in addition to the interference not allowing the servos to center well and lose strength, I tell you this because I have already seen it in person and it is not the best option to use 915Mhz
I love the TX16S but there isn’t a better radio at any price than the X20S/Pro. Nothing else offers such a complete package. The X20S offers tandem redundancy which is superior to duplex (jeti redundancy), superb build quality, and an OS that’s from the 21st century. All my edfs and turbines will fly with FRsky. Spektrum, Powerbox, and Futaba desperately need to add redundancy if I’m going to be a potential customer again.
Mixed emotions I am looking at Fixed Wing, have some vertigo issues so goggles and FPV are not likely, and the 16Smk 2 looks top of the line. The Upgraded Boxter is close in price. An embarrassment of riches and good problem to have....
Since you want redundancy, then this makes sense. My TX16S II Max was flawless - until the playfighting dogs broke the SF switch which I replaced today. I have a couple of BetaFPV Literadio (2 + 3 Pro), and I like them for the weight. I also have a RadioMaster Pocket waiting for me to configure it. I run ELRS, so I like to have one Model and all my FPV quads configured the same. So, from TinyWhoops, Cinewhoop and Freestyle quads use the same Model setup. I can see why you'd want redundancy. While I have zero concerns with my TX16S II Max, I have had a wire come off a gimbal on the BetaFPV LiteRadio 3 Pro midflight. Thankfully, that was a tinywhoop, so no harm was done. For an expensive aircraft, a heavy aircraft or for anything I was really concerned for safety, then redundancy is a good option. Would I go as far as having my visual observer with a second ELRS radio on standby? Maybe...
The new RadioMaster TX16S has had a chip shortage, they changed the B chip with a chip on label to a 8, the new chip will not bind to a Receiver because the Firmware wants the B chip, not the 8. If you get a new RadioMaster TX16S and it does not bind with the receiver that said No Telemetry Detected on your model set up screen. You will have to load new firmware, but I do not recommend it but were stuck either way. I am now looking for a olderTX16s receiver cheaper then buy a new Mainboard. And I get a lot of other free stuff. I buy It if I could. Thank you all.
Do i understand you right? You sell the tx16 only because it's too cheap??? Let me guess... you have an apple phone and a mercedes... because it's expensive?
FrSky made good Radios and still do. Agreed they had many RF protocols, but they were there from the start of 2.4G. RF protocols evolve for reasons of range, resilience, telemetry support, regulatory standards. Okay they made an absolute mess of receiver firmware. However I would trust their hardware over 4in1 for reasons of component tolerance and not having a 4in1 aerial switch in line with the signal. Radiomaster have never designed an RF protocol. They copied Jumper's circuit schematic and threw in the knightrider chicken feet. Best thing they did was the Hall gimbals. If you're interested in RM hardware design there is a blog where someone reverse engineers the TX16S ... interesting reading.
A lot of mansplainning here. Hahaha. Great video. I get it though. I convinced myself for a week i needed another radio. And i bought it and have a big smile in my face despite the fact that i actually didnt need another radio.
So in short you did trust a cheap Chinese radio so bought an other less cheap Chinese radio 😂 Always flown Graupner /JR back in days at the club. Nitro's/gasoline/electric plane and heli. Bought a X9D a few years ago. Not too active now. Only flying smaller stuff but would do the job for others. Never liked the menu structure and designs of Futaba and spectrum had many brownout issues in the first series. Way to sensitive for voltage drops and restart didn't happen or took too long. Not saying FrSky is a bad choice but it's still a Chinese brand made with Chinese components so is it really more reliable except the fact you took your old one apart. It still works now so probably it will.
MC15 35MHz and later MX12 MHz and MX16s 35MHz with Assan 2.4GHz module in it. Also modified my MX12 to Immersion RC 433MHz. Cheap transmitters are way better than the more expensive then. Hallsensor Gimball. Way more options and channels. GRAUPNER was cheap plastic too. Degrading over time. Getting brittle.
😂 yeah sort of. In my opinion the new frsky radios are getting on par with the premium brands even though they are Chinese with all the redundant systems they have built in. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
I was happy with my FrSKY X9D Taranis Plus, after I upgraded the switches and audio system then resoldered the control board but then FrSKY went insane and sabotaged OpenTX while 'creating' ETHOS. The ethics involved resulted in my removing all FrSKY receivers and moving on to ELRS based advance modern protocol, they screwed me, screw them. It was not just 'me', there were thousands that got Fuded over FrSKY's greed. Have fun with that $500 result of FrSKYs lack of ethics and abundant greed, you're feeding it.
Todays Transmitters should have the battery to be allowed to be external with a power cord, the placement of the hands has always been crap, should have rubber sides for comfort & grip. What about rain covers?
I fly big turbines on my radiomast tx16s .. it has a module bay. Run international and external and you have redundancy! I runs d16 internal and 900 external. Or just run external elrs.. . What you did was spend a lot of money to do something simple your current radio already did..

I'm still rocking a Futaba 14mz and my Spekrum dx7s
Would trust the Radiomaster TX16S much more than any FRSky product.... They have let me down in the past... Will never go back
@@lasersbee oh dear. To be fair I’ve not been let down by either.
The Boxer max is the radio you want. the Tx16s is the size of a large house.
Agreed. I’ll be ordering a Boxer Max in January 👍🏻
But that nice huge color display is sooo sexy
I ordered the Pocket for my nano/micro/mini whoops simple and light.
The Radiomaster is capable, but i understand the extra layer of safety a tandem system will give. A good and understandable Choice you did there in my opinion.
@@RoarIsaksen1959 much appreciated thanks 👍🏻
gotta catch em all
Frsky looks awesome thinking about change also but got ix14 and radio master tx16 all good transmitters
I can definitely recommend the Frsky 👍🏻
Waffle or not Im interested as I was considering getting a generation 2. The Radio Master tx16s Max retails at about £245 BTW
Thanks Mark 👍🏻 the version I’m talking about is the AG01 Max 👍🏻
Beautiful remote and your logic makes a lot of sense, but it seems to me that you put a lot of emphasis on reliability and how expensive the models are. With the same logic it doesn't make any sense to buy anything less than Futaba or Jeti. I know you addressed it but still it seems very inconsistent.
Anyway, interesting video and commentary.
Thanks for watching. Yep I hear what you’re saying 👍🏻
Ah Dear! Even at 2x speed this vanity waffle is just too tiresome for yours truly. Bailed before half way through. 🙄
Appreciate your comment and thanks for watching 👍🏻
Frsky makes quality radios. I just wish they supported EdgeTx OS. I like the programming EdgeTx on color touch screen.
Yeah it would be a nice option
im rockig Mikado Vbar Evo and im happy
@@MaxXGrand nice 👍🏻
You should have put a 2.4G 1W ELRS module instead of using 915Mhz, 915Mhz introduces noise to the servos and damages them in a short period, in addition to the interference not allowing the servos to center well and lose strength, I tell you this because I have already seen it in person and it is not the best option to use 915Mhz
@@crackup007 thanks for the tip 👍🏻
I love the TX16S but there isn’t a better radio at any price than the X20S/Pro. Nothing else offers such a complete package. The X20S offers tandem redundancy which is superior to duplex (jeti redundancy), superb build quality, and an OS that’s from the 21st century. All my edfs and turbines will fly with FRsky. Spektrum, Powerbox, and Futaba desperately need to add redundancy if I’m going to be a potential customer again.
@@williamhammond3998 couldn’t have said it better 👌🏻. Cheers 👍🏻
Mixed emotions I am looking at Fixed Wing, have some vertigo issues so goggles and FPV are not likely, and the 16Smk 2 looks top of the line. The Upgraded Boxter is close in price. An embarrassment of riches and good problem to have....
16s mk2 is a brilliant radio. You will be happy with that 👍🏻
Since you want redundancy, then this makes sense.
Maybe...
Cool thanks. I’ve just spent £1700 on a turbine engine so feel I need some redundancy going forward 👍🏻
@@tdogrc Nice!
I'll give you a fiver for it. 😀
😂 thanks
I had been rocking a beat down DX6i for 7 years and sold it last weekend when I picked up DX6 and know I'm regretting it😒😔
Oh dear 😟
Just bought the tx12
Good choice 👍🏻
Do i understand you right? You sell the tx16 only because it's too cheap???
Let me guess... you have an apple phone and a mercedes... because it's expensive?
No, you’ve completely misunderstood. I do have an apple phone and an Audi Q8 which was very expensive though 👍🏻
@@rodolphestpreux you’re absolutely spot on 😂
So in short you did trust a cheap Chinese radio so bought an other less cheap Chinese radio 😂
Always flown Graupner /JR back in days at the club.
Nobody wants to hear the history of every transmitter you've ever owned.
@@davescott9409 how TF do you know?
These controllers are getting ridiculous, how are you supposed to fly across the world with that big ass box.
@@crazy3rdgen it is big for sure 👍🏻
Todays Transmitters should have the battery to be allowed to be external with a power cord, the placement of the hands has always been crap, should have rubber sides for comfort & grip. What about rain covers?
I fly big turbines on my radiomast tx16s .. it has a module bay. Run international and external and you have redundancy! I runs d16 internal and 900 external. Or just run external elrs.. . What you did was spend a lot of money to do something simple your current radio already did..
But my new radio is shiny…
I didn't know that's possible to run both the internal module and external at the same time. Will be great to know how to do it.
@@R.B_B I never thought about it either but it’s a great suggestion 👍🏻
Can you show us a clip of radiomaster flying big turbines?
And it runs EthOS ...
Jeri radio for me very time
They do look very nice bits of kit. By the time I get round to buying a turbine I will probably have one 😂
just go buy a new one, will cost you twice what you paid for this, lol. I wouldn't trust Frsky with anything again.
I did 👍🏻
If you like to spend some more money get yourself a IX20.I like the one I have.
Smart man, you chose FrSky.
Cheers 👍🏻
the programming is supposed to be much easier on the Frsky radio, and that alone would convince me to buy it. ANYTHING is better than OTX.
Yes EthOS looks very nice. I will do a video on using it 👍🏻
Haha, you are selling because you are cheap. Otherwise, you would do a giveaway for your subscribers, lol.
lol. It’s long gone now I’m afraid. Maybe I’ll give the X20s away in the future…
Haha so he bought another chinese radio..
Yep.
Yes, it's great he's not a sheep. Good thing he didn't pay over a grand for a cheap plastic Futaba with outdated features. ua-cam.com/video/LargnWPSX04/v-deo.html
Mostly it is not the radio but the pilot when it got wrong!
You’re right 👍🏻
