I personally like the pre-WWII names more than the post-WWII ones, but then I'm not Japanese. Is there any reason why the post-WWII names are more popular now?
明 can be named by both male and female, but when using one letter "明Akira", it is generally a male name. If you use the kanji for "明" as a female name, it's usually "明美Akemi" or "明子Akiko". However, these are ideas for naming in reality. There are a wide variety of names for fictional stories, so I think it's possible to name a female character "Akira".
I think it isn't suitable for girl's names. Because that girl's is named that Bob,Michael. So usual most parents avoid that name for girl. The Kanji suitable for girl's name for example 美(Mi_beautiful) 子(Ko_child girl) 音(Oto,Ne_sound) sorry I can't use English good well.
They're very glossy, so either Takumi likes to paint his nails in his free time or that gloss is there to prevent him from biting his nails, as in the gloss has a bad taste so he'd stop biting his nails. Or he just naturally has really glossy nails, idk
The main meaning of the letter 武 is battle and bravery, and it sometimes stands for spirits of samurai because of the connection of these meaning to them. We call samurai as samurai too in Japan with the letter 侍. As a side note, the original meaning of 侍 is to serve(侍ふ, saburau※ old Japanese).

I think it is just pure feeling of defeat and inferiority. Post WWII situation in Japan was to feel sorry for everything they did during war.
Is Akira an androgynous name? If so, does it have different kanji for each gender or it's all the same?

Wait so the Japanese word for samurai isn't samurai?
I'm a foreigner and I've seen 侍 and 士 used for samurai. It's probably better that an actual Japanese person answers this though.
侍 samurai
On-Reading→ジji,シshi
Kun-Reading→ さむらいsamurai,はべるhabe(ru),さぶらうsabura(u)
Thanks
