The line lay on the reel is very normal. That is the Daiwa's way of line management. If you look at any operation manual by Daiwa, they said that the concave shape of line lay is actually correct. I own a Daiwa fuego, it also has the concave line lay, also if you look closer at your Exceler, it is actually also concaved. If you don't like the concave shape, you can adjust that by adding an extra washer on the main shaft, under the spool.
As someone who owns this reel, I feel like its well worth the money. The weight is perfect, the line lay is good and i have had no issues with it. I love the white paint job. Chrome, red and black are overrated. I have my share of bass and i am looking forward to catching more. Great review.
Think my Regal 2500D XH just gave up the ghost. I had drag last Friday when a 10+ pound hybrid mashed my Mini Max chatterbait. 5-6 runs & towing my Yak 360 degrees. Ultra impressed with smoothness of reeling from BCS Johnny Morris at the Bristol store. Also there is zero "play" once you stop reeling. Exceler or Johnny Morris ---- not sure which i will buy. Might come down to cost of spare spool ---- i only use 2 spinning outfits on the water. Mega thanks for letting us know that Daiwa makes the JM Carbonlite.
The Carbonlite is an Exceler LT with 2 bearings supporting the spool. Or a Daiwa Regal LT with air bail and screw in handle. Or a Daiwa Fuego LT without the Magseal. When on sale, this reel is best bang for the buck. However, since 2021 Daiwa came out with the Zaion V material on the Legalis, Exceler and Fuego so the Carbonlite (DS5 material) is now inferior than the Daiwa LTs. I would still recommend this reel tho. I've caught a 46.5" (close to 30lb) pike on this reel and the drag performed flawlessly. I feel like the North American fishing reel industry has softened our confidence level of spool depth by offering mostly deep spool reels. That 2nd half of the spool line never seen day light..... It's a money grab between the reel and line company... I think the Carbonlite spool (Daiwa non-deep normal spool, not S either) is a perfect size for walleye and pike fishing and anything in between and smaller. Great video!
Depends on the species too, cause if I’m jigging 90 feet for lakers this reel wouldn’t make me feel comfortable! Bass fishing tho is no problem. Thanks for the comments, appreciate the support!
@@humbugvideos Yep lake trout would be an exception. I was able to put 150m of 10lb braid on the 3000 size which is enough for most freshwater situations. But like you said probably not for big fish bottom fishing like sturgeon or big catfish.
This reel has the Tatula gear ratio..also diawa has a couple other spools that wind more line at the top..their Very expensive reels….also I have a few of them…on a couple I installed ball bearings in the handle…removes most of the play and feels better…also most diawa reels this one included the drag takes more force at first then lightens up…I fix this with carbontex drag washer-meant for the fuego…hugely improves the drag
Hi there, if you have the information would you mind sharing the sizing of your reel and the sizing of the items used to upgrade / links? Much appreciated
Let me ask y’all. When I reel mine it has a feeling when the rod under the spool fully retracts. It just feels like something hitting something. Idk what it is. Idk if it is normal or not. Wanted to know if others when they are retrieving feel a like clunking feeling in the reel.
I do have a question. In your opinion, why arent basspro rods and reels used more? There are hardly any product reviews or any good information like this avaialable.
The Exceler and the Carbonlite 2.0 are the exact same reel. They’re not just similar, they’re the same in terms of frame and bail and internal gearing. But there are two minor differences on the outside. The Carbonlite has a shallower spool to hold less line. This doesn’t much matter since the core line is never used anyway. As long as I have two good cast lengths worth (eventually cutting one off but having reserve so I don’t have to change line right that moment) then I’d be fine. The Carbonlite also has ball bearings in the handle grip. The Exceler does not, and it has no way to add them either. So in that regard the Carbonlite is actually the better reel, making it the one worth the money while the Exceler should have a lower price. Having bearings in the handle makes a difference. I bought a Carbonlite but returned it in favor of the Exceler. After 3 seasons the Exceler handle is worn enough that it now wobbles and makes noise. I’ll soon be ordering a Carbonlite handle to replace it. Also the Exceler now has an internal popping as well. I have yet to take the reel apart to investigate it but it is related to the spool shaft because it can move up and down about 2mm when pulled by hand. Something is worn there. I’ll figure out what part and replace it too. But right now I’m wishing I’d kept the Carbonlite instead. I’ve also fished the Exceler side by side a Fuego for the same length of time and the Fuego did not have this issue. The Exceler was used for crankbaits while the Fuego was used for wacky rigs and topwaters. So fishing them differently may explain that. A crankbait puts a constant drag on the reel and also requires a steady winding action. This is probably what wore the handle grip down and possibly what caused the internal wear. Any of the three reels I’ve mentioned would have been suseptible to the internal wear because they’d all be identical inside, but only the Carbonlite handle would have avoided wear there based on having bearings. The Fuego can have bearings added but doesn’t come with them (just has plastic bushings). When I order the new Carbonlite handle for the Exceler I’ll get two and cannibalize the bearings from one to fit the Fuego.
As someone who works at Bass Pro I didn’t know about the manufacturer! Def might get one because of the discount what rod would you pair with it? Like size and also action! Love the videos!
@humbugvideos I think your right they are made by doyo. Doyo makes lews and abu garcia and from the few bps baitcasters I've had in my hand they all look like a doyo. Was just shocked when you said that and wanted to get some clarification.

Just picked up a Johnny Morris baitcaster for $200 at BP. Have yet to hit the waters but I shall when the sun rises

I have 2 of them .. and one casting reel
Been looking for a good video on this for a while thank you
No problem, glad you enjoyed!

I see people fishing a lot of them! Just aren’t talked about much
not sure if its daiwa... but i know a TON of reels and all made in korea are from the company DAYO

Cant answer that, I don’t know what your targeting and how your targeting it!

@@Collin_Nicholas I’d go with a 7 foot medium, covers all around applications👍🏽
Does daiwa also make the baitcasters?
No, they haven’t released any info regarding that but I think it’s Lews

Who makes their johnny morris rods?
Good question, I believe someone once told me Lews but don’t take me serious on that. Just a rumor.
If it’s Lew’s, than I can’t complain. I love Lew’s as a company.
So it can’t handle cats… 🤔 I wonder how put against Daiwa regal…
I’m sure it could do ok catching some smaller ones, but I wouldn’t feel safe using it lol
You can look at some of reels with his name and I can tell you who there made by cause I'm old.Ha
