Let's talk about Neural Amp Modeler (NAM) - Interview with Steven Atkinson (Creator of NAM)

- In this video I have a talk with Steven Atkinson who is the creator of Neural Amp Modeler. Since Neural Amp Modeler (or NAM in short) beats Kemper, Quad Cortex and ToneX all together I wanted to have a talk with him and nerd out about amp modeling.

Thanks so much for having me! It was really great to get to chat
You’re a fucking hero Steven! Thank you for sparking the community!
So this is why I couldn't find your channel!. I'll check it out.
You are a genius. Please consider developing some plug-in like parallax for bassists too. Good luck
You are a genius bro thank you
The legend himself
We have a genius here guys!!! 👏👏👏
So thankful for what you've created
NAM is still astonishing me everyday!!! This guy is probably a genius. Thanks!!
Don’t forget the community. A scenius.
Just set the NAM up with Mendel's capture. WOW. Impressed doesn't begin to describe how I feel about this. Thank you for revealing this little nugget to me.
I had that exact same reaction. I used Habags 6534+ #5 profile with my york audio mes 412 os IR, and I was like this sounds and feels exactly like the real thing ive played in store. And I mean EXACTLY.
Congrats on the great interview Mendel. Very interesting and well done! Keep doing interviews, you’re getting really good at it!
Was looking forward to this video Mendel, thanks :)
I'm hoping that NAM's open source nature will lead to an industry standard for interoperability of machine modeled guitar tones.
Even Google has realized in a recent leak that open source AI is going to grow at such a rate that they will not be able to compete using fully closed source versions of this new tech.
Personally, it would really excite me to see this technology develop in a way similar to image generation ML models in that people are merging the best parts of various "specifically trained" models to create something entirely new that gives them more of what they are looking for.
For example...maybe you like the aggression of a Marshall Plexi with a 4x12 at full volume...but then want to get the clean edge of breakup tone of a small combo simply by backing off your guitar volume. Merging the best parts of two separate models could allow you to seemlessly transition between those two different models based on how you play into it!
While I'm not against people/companies monetizing tech like this....I'm just very glad there are still people like Steve in this world that are offering their talent and skill out of a desire to enrich people's lives.
Great interview, both of you! Love NAM and the community!
Mendel, now this is the interview I would have expected, which answers questions I would have asked Steven! Fantastic! Unfortunately, I saw the interview ToneJunkie TV made with Steven that was disappointing as he did not take the opportunity to ask the right questions that would be in the minds of folks like me in the modern view of tone tools of guitarists! Yours was the perfect interview, in my opinion, thanks!!
Yeah the tonejunkie interview was terrible. This one was amazing.
Beautiful conversation guys..
I'll try it today! I hope I like half as much as the amount of "like" Steven said!
Great Interview Mendel, thank you for the amp profile, I'm a NAM user and that's what I'm using right now, no more Amp Sims for me, best regards !
Dat is heel handig mijn vriend 😊
Great interview!
Great chat
It beats Kemper and TONX in everymode in terms of modeling amps behaviour. I just did a capture in my channel for my Plex 93 - sounds exactly like it plugged in direct to a load box.
I just gave it a try, and i must admit that THIS SHIT IS WORTH IT . The time that I lost to find the right models is largely profitable by the quality of the simulation. This shit will stuck forever in my plugin collection . Thanks Steven .
Thoroughly enjoyed this conversation!
Went by too fast :)
Awesome discussion :)
cool, geeky, love it 🥰
If the future development of guitar tone is in the hands of guys like Steven, I think we are good. Even though my tone taste developed in the mid 80s. At least he is a high gain geek. Cheers from Germany!
Early days I know but I think this will be one of those all time stories in the music industry.
Yeah, big call 🤗🤗but this will fundamentally change things.
Leo Fender
Jim Marshall
Ikutaro Kakehashi
Steven Atkinson 🤔
The next step is to get someone with hardware expertise involved and build something similar to the ToneX pedal for people who want to be able to load the profiles on some hardware.
Can we talk about how Steven makes a sm-57 sound like a sm-7b?! I think we have a Neural Mic Modeler in the works.
He’s a guitarist, of course he has an sm57
How can these captures recreate the dynamic response of the circuits in an amp? The tone stack and the realtime responses of the components under different dynamic demands would require an infinite amount of “captures”.
One more slot? Please!! ;-) It would be sweet to add a pedal. ;-)
Can’t you just run another instance in a DAW?
Awesome content man, subbed!
i❤this guy. He's guitar God. Not the guitarists🎉
The answer "it's more accurate because it allows you to configure it for higher accuracy" is kinda ridiculous. Also I don't know if this higher accuracy is generally acknowledged. In any case, apparently a great product and, so far, free.
I just bought ToneX a few days ago after watching Mendel’s comparison video. ☹️
And what’s the issue? I still use ToneX every day. That it’s a bit less accurate doesn’t mean it’s bad al of a sudden :)!
@@Mendelian it’s bad when I use it. 😁
He’s a mechanical engineer by training?!
Whats the best amp sim in the world right now ??
Depends on what you need, if you want as close to the real amp it’s Neural Amp Modeler (this video).
I see, thanks ! for straight forward accurate modeling ! and for metal mixing specifically, other than NAM, what would you recommend ? : D ..i have joey sturgis jeff loomis plugin and thats pretty cool. i also quite like the architype gojira plugin when i tried the demo : ) you have a favourite other than NAM ? @@Mendelian
For me either ToneX or Neural Amp Modeler. NAM is free so a no brainer :)
okay thanks !!! : ) no brainers ! appreciate that ! @@Mendelian
Bypass button Steve please!
both tonex and nam suffer from bad sounding sustains. its what gives the software away
When you have amps you can play with capturing. We don't have amps.
