    nice work qt! i love the look of a decomposed granite footpath, but the pavers really help keep the tracking down. a spin off this project could be filling the cracks with dirt instead and planting seeds.

    Turned out so beautiful! I have been planning to do this, I am going to use my tiller though. I actually find more beauty in the imperfect pathways. The look is far more natural and you don't have to fight the layout. They are far more ZEN.

      I agree. there are times when you want to add structure to Nature and other times when you just let Nature dictate the lines. Plus, this kind of walkway is so much more changeable and repairable. No cracks in mortar or heaving.Just refill when erosion occurs between stones. And if you hate the whole thing no jack hammer to break it apart!

    FINALLY....a great DIY video on how to make a flagstone pathway! I've scoured UA-cam for 2 hours trying to find a simply explained, step-by-step, DIY instructional video on a flagstone pathway. This was absolutely what I was looking for...PERFECT. There are some horrendous videos out there that look like sh*t! And even better, you are in Austin. I just purchased my material from Whittlesey in Round Rock, delivering to my house in P'Ville this Friday, I will be referencing your vid often in sure. I'm using the saw-chopped block border as well. Once your project had settled in, did you have any drainage issues or rain puddling from the blocks trapping the water? You didn't mention anything about grading the pathway before or after you laid down the DC, if you did, my apologies. Great video Naomi! Thank you!!

    I only have a couple of small changes I would make, because we have zoysia grass and it is quite invasive. First I dug down a bit more and used weed barrier fabric (old roofing material works well too) and set the flagstone into a 3” base of concrete as well as used concrete for an inch of the perimeter grout. I then laid my decomposed granite between my flagstone making it look like the stones were held in place by the decomposed granite, while all along the flagstone was more permanent mounted in place with concrete. I may have gone a bit overboard with the construction of this sidewalk; however I was after minimizing my labor later and not having to fight this intrusive Ryle grass.

    I laid out a small patio with flagstone with large gaps exactly like yours. I used paver base to stabilize the stone and also to fill the gaps. The patio is on a slight slope and gets lots of water runoff. Most of my paver base washed away and the water also undermined the stone.
    I'm interested in the decomposed granite. Is it much more durable in withstanding water runoff? Can you provide more specific info about the decomposed granite (brand, type, size, etc) Thank you very much!

    • @PurpleHousePropertiesLLC
      @PurpleHousePropertiesLLC  7 років тому

      No, actually it won't tolerate slope runoff very well. Well, a slight slope is fine but it will get washed away over time but the great thing is, you just buy more and freshen it up by sweeping it in!

      Sorry for the late reply! On the "Whittlesey" website ( www.989rock.com/ ) it says this DG is "Naturally decomposed granite from the Texas Hill Country. This material is screened to meet 1/2" minus specifications and packs great for joints between patio stones. Makes excellent driveways and walkways. Also great for added drainage and minerals to gardens and flower beds.
      Available by the bag & by the yard. Please check our price list for current pricing, call us for availability at 512-989-7625, or request a quote using the link below.
      SKU 211556, BAG SKU 211125. Other DG can be grey if source from another area. I believe it's kind of a local thing. BUT I could be wrong! Maybe one could tint DG! I don't really know!

    you tamped down "sand" as a base, but later talked about decomposed granite being underneath the stepping stones. Are they the same thing? Also is your edging stone real stone or concrete man made pavers? The latter do contain a small percentage of slag which in turn can contain fly ash (contains mercury) from coal burning. I guess no one thinks about this though. Such is everywhere now.

    • @PurpleHousePropertiesLLC
      @PurpleHousePropertiesLLC  7 років тому +2

      Hmmm interesting about the coal ash! No these are limestone chop blocks. They come in different cut sizes. The sand is the base for a level surface to lay the stones and the DG is for the edging trenches (better drainage) and in between the pavers. Sometimes also under the pavers if there is a large discrepancy in levels between stones.

      Sorry to tell you, but I did actually do the work myself. I rolled the stones I could, and when I needed help, I asked my husband to help carry the heavier stones. The only part of the work I did not do, was tweaking the levels of each stone by filling underneath with sand or DG. I was running another project so just got two guys to do the leveling. Don't be disappointed! These how to videos are never perfect!
