Distance is a bit overrated imo unless you want to get to scratch (extremely difficult). Just aim to get to mid single digits by being accurate off the tee and having great short game. I play with mid singles all the time who are in their 50s and 60s and who only hit it barely over 200 yards off the tee. But they hit the fairway nearly every time.

Lou a favour to ask ...On your podcast with Mark and Greg chalmers (Hack it out) can you let Mark know that listeners actually would like to know what you and Greg have to say??? And encourage him not to continually interrupt you and your guests?

Approach play I can confirm is key, as a 5 handicap I do everything pretty well but from 80 yards in to chipping distance I lose strokes every round and to get down to a zero I need to figure that out.

So true…I had two, back to back birdies on my last round, thought I was on my way to my best score ever….shot 83….sheesh, still never broken 80 but also still making progress…short game and putting!

      Ill help you out
      1) Using some stats, figure out if you had a complete outlier in what is holding you back. If you do, maybe work on that
      2) Scatch players are better at everything, however, the biggest gap is the approach play, then off the tee, then putting.
      3) High handicappers lose a silly amount of shots getting themselves into "red light situations" usually by making silly decision making
      4) Distance. Every 10 yards of distance lost is a shot per round
      5) Scratch only make 1.8 more birdies per round than 18 handicappers

This is gold and thank you gentlemen. I've just blown out from 4 to 9, probably due to some tough family matters and a swing change. At 55, I'm losing distance and driver accuracy, so you've affirmed my gut feeling that I should get into some speed training. Short game is strong but I tend to lose shots off the tee. Looking forward to returning to low singles and thank you from Sydney - Dave 🙂

As a 10-handicap whose putting is near-scratch, but whose tee and approach game is atrocious, I appreciate the validation. Eight penalty strokes per round (on average) absolutely kills my scores.
