    04:21 'a little off the top, please.' , lol.
    I have a plumbago that somewhat grows in this fashion. Big beautiful true blue flowers. It is thinned out throughout the summer.
    But I believe it would benefit from a good cleaning like this. It's about five years old, grew like a beast, with a lot of dead wood in the middle that I have been hesitant to cut out. It is a very hardy plant, so I have no worries about damaging it.
    I recently subscribed. Your presentations are straight forward and clear about lots of plants us gardeners are familiar with.
    TY

      Thank you for those kind remarks, it's a pleasure to know that you are appreciating our efforts.
      Pruning and thinning out mature shrubs is a good way to rejuvenate them. Yes, it often helps to keep them within bounds, but more importantly, if you go in a thin out the older, woodier growth - it promotes healthy, vigorous new shoots and with improved air flow and light reaching the inner parts it often helps to reduce the opportunity for diseases to set in as well.

      Thank you, that's great to hear. It's a lovely, very hardy, easy to grow little shrub and hopefully now you'll be able to enjoy even better performance from it. One further note...., if your site suits it getting a little bigger, and you don't feel like pruning it on an annual basis, you could do this every second or third year. This will keep it growing nice and vigorously so that it flowers well and at the same time obviously reduces the workload.

    Awesome video
    I'm glad you made this video. I have a question. I just plant 3 Nikko Deutzia last year, so they are quite small and young. Pruning will incur more flowers? Or it is mostly for size control? Thanks

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 роки тому +2

      Pruning them this way will bring MORE FLOWERS😉. Because they flower on the growth made the previous summer, the more shoots are produced... the MORE FLOWERS they will bear 🌼. It will also make the plants bushier and more compact 😁💚 ✂

    Lovely! What would be a good companion plant that deer will leave alone? I have a long area that I'm removing really old overgrown lilacs which I just don't like. I just don't care for the holes left after they are pruned. Gorgeous when flowering!!

    • @OverdevestNurseries

      Thank you.
      We are pleased to tell you that there are lots of really nice plants that you could consider from shrubs like Berberis (especially the new Worryfree (non invasive) 'Crimson Cutie' that has purple foliage, and would contrast nicely with the white flowers of the Deutzia. Or perhaps the big, bold, upright habit and movement of the TurkeyFoot grass, Andropogon 'Black Hawks'. Or perhaps, you'd rather have some of the dwarf butterfly bushes (Buddleia), or low or spreading perennials like Yarrow (Achillea) or Bleeding Hearts if there's any shade.
      You could start by searching or scrolling through the videos here on this channel, where we have featured hundreds of plants over the years!
      In these videos, David (in his commentary and descriptions) usually mentions if they they are "not preferred by deer".
      Then when you've compiled a possible wish list, you could visit some of our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ to see the plants and select in reality, the ones that appeal to you most.
      The plant experts at these centers will (if they are not too busy), will usually be able to help you further too.

    Thank you for the video. When you prune after the flowering, can that be done in the fall or should it be done soon after it finishes flowering?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Рік тому +2

      It is best to prune them immediately after flowering because that leaves time for them to set bud for the following spring.
      if you prune them in autumn, they will grow out to be bushier etc. but not flower well until the following year.

    Taking so much off the plant leaves an awfully large area there in the summer that looks pretty bad. Would you suggest that gardeners plant annuals around or set planted pots in that area? What month are you doing this pretty drastic pruning please?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 роки тому +5

      The pruning took place in early June and I am glad to say that the plants quickly regrow to make attractive mounds of bright green foliage. So while they look quite "bare" immediately after pruning this doesn't last long.

    What power pruner do you recommend? I have seen plants butchered by power pruners and other plants look fine when power pruned.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 роки тому +1

      There's several good power tools out there, the main thing is to find one that is reliable, safe and easy to use. Backed up by a good dealership with regular servicing and repair place if anything goes wrong. I would suggest that its not so much the tools but the operator! And like you I've seen some really ugly (so called) pruning jobs too.

    Can Deutzia withstand a hard prune to say 3” from the ground to mitigate the density?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 роки тому +1

      As you've probably noticed, they are tough and resilient and cutting them back even harder would be OK (if you had to), but I favor the thinning out / renewal method as described.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Рік тому +1

      Yes, it can be pruned too, after it finishes flowering.
      You don't need to prune them every year (unless you are trying to keep them smaller and more compact), however, giving them a good prune every two or three years will definitely prove valuable. Thanks for watching.

    You know a lot about the Deutsia, can you or should you, plant it in a container?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 роки тому +1

      They will do very well in containers, that's (after all) how we grow all our plants (in pots): ua-cam.com/video/PKpt55ETUFA/v-deo.html and you are doing the same except in larger and probably more ornamental pots.
      The only thing you have to be a little mindful of (depending upon your hardiness zone) is the roots in winter time. The varieties that our garden center partners: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ offer are very hardy in garden soils but anything that is sitting out in a pot will have its roots elevated and in mid-winter and could freeze solid, which is not something that happens to them when their roots are insulated under the ground. So, if you decide to try it in a container, you should probably think about moving the pot to a sheltered (not heated) position or wrapping the pots in some way to prevent the pot from freezing solid. Otherwise, you will find that they will grow wonderfully well and flower beautifully. Above, I have included a link to one of the varieties we grow, but if you scroll through this channel or visit our website: grownbyoverdevest.com/ you will find several types profiled. And, if you care to kindly subscribe to this channel, we are likely to be posting more videos on other types too in the coming years. Thanks for a neat question.

    what I really want to know is this....since I have never pruned them this hard, they are really wide at the base now. They're too big for the spot I put them in years ago. (they are in full busy form and they're about 5' wide.). Can the base be made a smaller diameter somehow?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  21 день тому +2

      Yes, you should be able to trim them in to reduce the width. Just remember that to make sure they have enough time to grow out and set new flower buds for next year, it is important to trim them immediately after flowering. Also they transplant well, so if you have another spot with more room, you can dig around the outside of the clump, create a good rootball and move them in either late autumn or early spring.
      In fact, David tells us that some of the plants in this video were moved and relocated, so that's another option if you have the space.
