Imagine an earth-like planet far larger than our own. NASA has actually discovered numerous exoplanets, dubbed ‘super-earths,’ which are over twice the size of our tiny home-world. Most of these super-earths can’t support life, but it’s interesting to imagine what sorts of organisms we’d discover on a super-sized version of a habitable world...
Phtanum B is a speculative biology project created by the brilliant Stevemobcannon, who imagines just such a planet, and the incredible alien life that might evolve on it.
So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll be voyaging to the extraordinary alien world of Phtanum B…

Thank you so very much for covering my project! The video is wonderful!!
Checked out your channel and saw that you where inspired by Cösemen's Snaiad project (and honestly, who weren't), and I can see traces of Barlows Darwin as well. When it comes to inspiration you can hardly do better than that, and I really like the direction you've taken your own project in. I also love the detail and compositions of your illustrations; no mere pale imitation of the great artists mentioned, but true scientific reference-illustrations of an imagined world in their own right.
Great work!
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO
@@ccriztoff how tho
You deserve all of the positivity for this! Absolutely amazing and I love watching this project grow and unfold.
It’s da guy
Jeez the amount of creativity needed to make these worlds is astonishing. Definitely inspiring for me!
what really surprises me is how he finds all of the spec zoos, legit.
Well, actually it's really quite simple and easy. First make a body plan, maybe two or three if you want other species living alongside each other. Then distort the body plan appropriately for the different niches. If two creatures occupy the same niche then either let one go extinct or if you don't want to kill off your darlings you could have one do "niche partitioning" so they don't have to compete with one another. There's a UA-cam series I really like called "Alien Biospheres" that goes into the process of how to make an alien world (link here: ua-cam.com/play/PL6xPxnYMQpquNuaEffJzjGjMsr6VktCYl.html ). Don't let the complex designs fool you. With enough knowledge and know-how of speciation, ecologies and evolution and a nice sprinkle of imagination you too could come up with an alien world of your own. Just don't copy Alien Biospheres one to one with the designs, I put imagination in the list of requirements for a reason.
Edit: had to tweak this comment a bit because the link didn't work
Don't let the creativity of others daunt you your mind is just as powerful as theirs
@@gerrardjones28 EXACTLY!
I love your man after man profile pic
The man returned when the world needed him the most
Unlike aang
We don't want him we need him
"He, is, the painkilleeeer"
But Does The World Really Need Man? Or Is Man Just One Of The World's Many Obstacles?
The amazing illustrations are what really bring these worlds to life
Thank you!!
Ikr! the whalefall one looks absolutely stunning
A game with monsters based on speculative zoology would either be an rpg, an open world game, or a card game.
It could be all 3 too
You should watch a youtuber called tier zoo he has made an imaginery evolution game
Open world would be cool.
There is going to be a game based on the speculative biology project series that goes by the name of "alien biospheres", but the devs of the game are waiting until the final episode of the alien biospheres series comes out to start developing the game, so that's something to look forward to.
Could be a colony building survival games too, would be cool
Love the speculative biology content!
Thanks!
Yay! I love the spec alien biology stuff.

man, you really should consider doing a part 2 on this project. there's so much new stuff to not only the ecology but the lore as well. genuinely my favorite spec project out there.
Goddamn man. This is one of the best up-and-coming channels on UA-cam I’ve seen in a while - and you even accept requests from your viewers! I saw the comment asking for this on a previous video.
Thanks, that comment was actually how I found out about the project!
@@CuriousArchive I'm gonna go look for some fictional worlds for you to talk about now, I'm in love with speculative biology and evoloution.

6:33 this is clearly a butchertree, which is great, because sessile tree like creatures which stab things around them are a very interesting concept! I imagine the area around them is a safe haven for plants that are usually eaten by grazers.
the snaiad/darwin IV crossover we all wanted

And now in 2023, it's time for Helldivers references.
LITERALLY CLICKED ON THIS VID BECAUSE MY BRAIN READ SUPER EARTH
I've been waiting for so long for you to do a video on Phtanum B, can't believe it's finally here
Hope you enjoyed it!
I'm sure there'll be more videos about Phtanum B, right? Like, there's still the fact that it's only the southern continent that has red flora, while the northern one has green; or the fact that the continents are so neatly divided into north and south is because the equator is basically one giant hipercane called the Stormwall, in which wind speeds reach close to 1000 km/h and flatten geography and tear windwhales to pieces; or how the local fauna uses these hipercane winds to disperse their young in polyp stage and once they anchor themselves in ground, they grow their secondary adult bodies underground; or how windwhales are just the biggest examples of sky-bound fauna that also includes the constantly-afloat skyreefs... and so on, and so on. This is really a fascinating project and I can't wait for more!
Amazing as always. These creatures look so bizarre almost to the point you don’t believe they could exist. But knowing how bizarre our universe is that’s quite a possibility. I know that Alien xenomorphs were covered many times by others, but I’d really love to hear your take on the story of xenomoprhs or other famous or lesser-known sci-fi species💜
Finally the first one that Made an alien ecosystem on a super earth planet.
Definitely not the first, but probably the weirdest.

@@imaredwhale2thenotsoelectr916 ah yes that documentary, has alot of gigantic species there.
@@imaredwhale2thenotsoelectr916 wellllll... Steve has canonically created *City sized colonial superorganisms* for Phtanum B.
The snow predator vaguely reminds me of a creature encountered on a planet whose thick athmosphere has frozen into a deep ice sheet from the sequel to hyperion, endymion...
reminds of the beast Kirk Encountered in Abrams Star Trek(2009) Reboot The Hengrauggi Of Delta Vega
I would imagine on a planet like this where humans are so tiny, they would destroy the ecosystem even faster then earth.
yeah easier to kill a 10 ton monster than 10 ton of insects
ok bois let's speedrun ruining this new planet
Nah they'll probably get a slap on the wrist by their parents if they pollute too much
The planet surface here is several time larger tho. A good margin for growth
@@grins9882 that's exactly the situation, Steve says the Deum are far less human-centric and could and would kill off humanity if it means saving a planet.
This reminds a lot of Darwin IV, but in a good way. Thick atmospheres, creatures with no eyes, crazy predators with cleft-like heads and tentacles, and predatory “trees.”
you familiar with the birrin?
Plus the creatures in both worlds are pretty big
I just looked at the views of your Pokémon vid compared to your speculative evolution videos and I just what to say that it makes me really happy you keep posting these types of videos even though more popular stuff gets your more views. The whalefalls of Wind Whales on Phtanum B remind me of the whalefalls of whales in Earth's deep seas. It is truly interesting to see how the ecosystems of a completely different planet can be so similar to our own, even though the biology of the lifeforms is so unusual!
Best yt channel
Thanks!
@@CuriousArchive For speculative zoology, definitely the best channel on the platform!
Finally, believable hypothetical aliens. I was beginning to lose hope that our imagination has faltered with all the "humanoid" looking ones from Star Wars and other franchises. Bravo!
Humanoid aliens are just as believeable under evolution, even if yes quite unimaginative. I really doubt it's completely impossible for something like a vertebrate, tetrapod, mammal, primate, and human to emerge on other worlds. I think more common images of intelligent civilizations would be things moreso resembling mantises and theropods, maybe also molluscs like an Octopus if they come onto land and gain access to fire.
I am once again amazed of the incredible projects out there. I love this channel, and I want to thank you for introducing us to these amazing worlds everytime we watch your videos
It's been a long time since I've seen a channel with such consistently high quality videos, this channel hit the ground running and it's been getting better ever since!

I have to wonder if humans would even be able to stand up on a planet that large, the gravity must be immense right?
Yes. Tall people would not be able to live. But shorter people might.
@@magnarcreed3801 Tall people might redevelop, but expect them to have thick, trunk-like legs and a powerful spine to compensate for the high gravity.
If humans wouldn't be able to stand on this planet, how would life get that big on it? The planet would have to be smaller with less gravity to support life like this.
@@Andrewtr6 Perhaps you should watch the video before commenting.
@@MachineMan-mj4gj I did watch it and I'm right. It's more likely that life would evolve to be smaller on a planet than evolve to be more muscular to support being bigger. There is no benefit to an animal begin as large as the one's get in this video on a planet with more gravity than Earth. It's possible that a few species would be more muscular in order to be bigger than other species they compete with. But if you believe that on a planet with more gravity than Earth, living creatures would become bigger than anything on Earth, you should watch some videos on biology. On Earth, there is already a limit on the size a species can get. This is because of the Sq Cube Law. A planet with higher gravity would limit it even more.
Btw, here's a quote I found supporting what I've said, "it’s possible that on a planet with lower gravity than Earth’s, such as Mars, terrestrial creatures less encumbered by their loads could grow much larger."
wow. these creatures are horrific. Thanks
Your speculative bio videos are seriously the best ones on UA-cam in my opinion, and introduced me to the topic. They’re so thorough and interesting. It’s obvious you put work and care into them and do the authors justice

I just love this channel! It’s like you hit on every subject that I’m into! Great videos!
They remind me of some other exoplanet project with their pseudo heads and a mouth below it. But there they had extandable mouths inside and hydraulic muscles as they evolved from that planets version of sea squirts. But I can't remember the name.
Snaiad, created by biologist and artist C. M. Kösemen! Definitely one of my bigger inspirations art-wise.
One of the best channel ever....imagination and creativity thrives in this channel
Thanks for introducing us to this amazing work
You know i was recently reading up on artificial intelligence and how hard it is to create a near human level artificial intelligence. One aspect of Artificial intelligence is the ability to simulate events or proteins in order to create new medicines, the problem with AI is that it cant create simulations without input, basically a computer cant simulate how a ball will bounce without teaching it how physics work. This got me thinking about how humans are basically biological strong AIs, we can speculate what 'aliens' would be like on alien worlds relying on nothing but what little information we know about animals on earth and assumptions about how these organisms would evolve on planets with different gravity, atmospheric pressures and atmosphere. These videos remind me of the fact that we are an emerged intelligence who got this far using simulations in our heads long before computers were invented.
Of all the channels I came across, this channel deserves the tag of "Underrated".
Legit favorite channel
I love these speculative ideas 💡 just brilliant
You're speculative evolution/zoology/biology videos are the best, you should clearly continue that

he should do a project on what life on a super habitable planet would be like, a planet better for life than earth.
Technically, Phtanum B is exactly that.
Its just that it's better, life giving conditions have made life all the more hostile
@@pokemonfanmario7694 I see were you are coming from, but a planet of two times the mass of earth can bring all sorts of challenges for life. For one the gravity is stronger and can stress out a lot of body functions for multicellular life and for the planet itself, in the video it is said that humans are placed on the planet so it is hinting that the atmosphere is similar to earth for humans to survive(if they are not genetical modified) but in real life we do not know how planets with bigger mass would react with earth like atmosphere .But what I am trying to say is that this planet is about the same to earth when it comes to sustain life not better for life ,But thank you very much for this comment as it was very fun to answer and even helped me kill time!
@@Onionman6583 oh wait, Curious archive didnt mention one of the primary attributes of Phtabum B?
The planets atmosphere has literal lethal to terran life levels of ammonia, everything is saturated with it. Human cities are domed, or have it so each building has an airlock. People literally need an exoskeleton suit just to go on a stroll outside.
@@pokemonfanmario7694 Then we both should ask the question is there really a planet better than because no matter the planet there will always be a negative side for humans or another species, just like how the earth is perfect for humans but could be dangerous to another species so we must ask is the such thing as a super Habitable planet because there will always be a different point of view who will disagree
