For a guy that claims to be a beginner you do some professional level work. Love all your repairs, patience, and on the fly adaptive ideas to fix the problems you face.
A shame you couldn't scream "YES!" at 03:45am, but fear not... I screamed it for you. Incredibly well done on this one mate, definitely up there with one of your most satisfying fixes! 👍
It still begs the question; how does one repair a ribbon cable? Many of the Switch cables are unique in pins and length, there's only a limited number you can salvage.
10/10 repair this one Vince! Nice tidy repair (well, except for the ribbon - but I dont think anyone could make it much cleaner joining ribbon to ribbon) =D
This is fantastic vince, a true credit to how far you've come in your skill level and knowledge. I'm actually extremely proud to see you running teenie tiny jumpers and whatnot. Just to let you know you can actually replace just the back-light on these, I have one to do so I'll do a video on it 😁
Just want to comment on how amazing it is to witness how you have evolved in your repairing skills. I have been watching your videos from when you didn't even have a hot air gun and we could see how your understanding of the inner workings of all of these devices grew with time and now you do this marvelous job.
When you said it is 4 in the morning I really felt your dedication, and people who try to fix stuff would understand the struggle but if you fix it the feeling of accomplishment is unprecedented
Love that you can repair things properly unlike other repair channels that just replace parts You learn how things work in the process which helps even more to understanding how it works Well done vince
That "rage-quit Nintendo Switch" always cracks me up. Nothing says rage quite like "I'M SO MAD I'M GOING TO DESTROY THE MOST IMPORTANT CHIP IN THIS ELECTRONIC RAAAAA!!!"
60£ really is a great deal, I paid 50€ for a broken switch a few months ago, it was fully working but the screen was broken and the metal internal frame was cracked. Fixed it up and sold it on. Greetings from Germany!
@28:50 Vince! If you've got a mushroom on that turn you can to use it to power through the waterfall on the right there for a one of the biggest shortcuts in the game! Great repair!
Vince, incredible job! As someone who does electronics repair for a living on a daily basis, those really are some repairs to be proud of. In regards to the flex cable repair, sure it's a bit of a bodge but that cable doesn't really move around once the switch is assembled so I'd like to think it wouldn't fair if covered in the UV glue
Have to say, even though I repair complex avionics equipment for military aircraft, that flexi would have been a nightmare for me! Great job on getting that back! Very nice work sir 👍
Hi Vince, when trying to take off faulty connectors I like to melt it with my soldering iron. The plastic melts away quiet easily. It's a little messy but a lot quicker and safer when there are other plastic components around it.
Awesome Video Vince. I admire your tackling this modern stuff and you never give up! its incredible! I learn a lot watching your channel and admire that you almost always get there in the end. I laughed so hard when you trimmed that tiny ribbon with those massive scissors. I think the ribbon would have held with your solder, but good for you for replacing it.
I like how you fixed all the sloppy work from the original repair and did it properly. I'm sure the joined backlight cable would've been fine as long as the soldering was good, there is not much chance of the cable moving around once it's all assembled especially when you glue it down. But you can still keep the screen with the joined cable and use it for another Switch later, maybe one you are not reselling but keeping or giving away to a friend/family member, so you have the opportunity to repair it if issues arise later.
You can replace the backlight from a broken LCD screen onto this one you know. I used to do this all the time on 3ds. Great soldering on the ribbon cable tho, I know how much of a pain that would have been.
Vince is back to switches. I like it. The ribbon cable you made worked alltough it looked horrible but you are right. Who knows how long it would have lasted?
I'd say you've officially been promoted from Switch Killer to the Dr. Frankenstein of Switches at this point. Always nice to see something saved, even if it takes a few other parts to get it up to snuff :)
Vincent. If you just wants to remove the connector, and never to use it again. Just destroy the plastic part of the connector, and wick off the pin with solder iron and solder wire. It is batter then using hot air. Because it use less heat and flux.
a consideration for future projects that might also have water damage/corrosion. pick up a small 1.5litre basic ultrasonic and some ultrasonic PCB cleaner like this: www.allendale-ultrasonics.co.uk/flux-remover-and-pcb-ultrasonic-cleaner-solution-1-litre-cleaning-fluid after documenting the kind of damage and where it is, clean the entire board to be certain its free of contaminants, do your repairs then repeat to remove flux. it lasts ages and makes it look 'from factory' again.
paused at 2:37 to check any odd work.. took me some time to realize that it wasn't a hair or something else, but a wire. that certainly is odd 22:35 love that reaction
Vince, I watched through your video and I wanted to comment on your soldering. I'll try to get a video out to help you out, you need a different type of flux and more of it. The stuff your using doesn't seem to flow the solder well. I recommend (amtech 559 v2 & amtech 213.. get genuine flux) & It's time for a microscope :) That way you can visibly see a microscopic crack on the joint of a component of connector or trace, and you can show the audience. You did great with this one buddy. Good job :)
Nice work, wondering if you could use those fiberglass brushes to scrap the ribbon cable and you could brush "outside" side on one side and "inside" on the second one so you just have to put the 2 parts on top of each other and melt the solder to fuse them
It would have been easier to use a fiberglass brush but he doesn't like using it anymore, says the particles get into his skin, you can also breathe them in which probably isn't great for you, although it is just fiberglass, if it was dangerous like asbestos they wouldn't be selling it, but that doesn't mean it can't have long term effects if you inhale it on a regular basis. I love my fiberglass brush, it just makes a very clean and evenly sanded surface, but I definitely notice that my hands are full of "glitter" afterwards, but it seems to go away with a wash.
I don't know if you care but what you're working on is not a "ribbon cable", it's an FPC - flexible printed circuit. Ribbon cable - individual wires in a single piece of molded insulation that keeps them separate. Insulation is usually PVC. Flexible Flat Cable (FFC) - A flat piece of plastic with flat conductors laminated onto it, usually white. Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) - Like a PCB but on a flexible substrate like Kapton instead of fiberglass. Can often fit into the same connectors as FFC. A lot of times a circuit board will have a layer in it that is flex and extends out from the rest of the board.
That soldered screen will work just fine... I've seen worse when i accidentally ripped the lcd flex cable on my tablet and 8 years later, still works just fine. We didn't have any uv mask back then so we used plain scotch tape
Regarding the "five hour videos" for the "people that would watch that" you could start a seperate channel and upload it there. Like "Vince Extended Edition" or something. You could just add a premade intro and end video and upload it unedited, copying the titles etc from the edited video, so not much extra work. You are correct to be cautious about using this on your main channel as YT likes views and it would lower your views vs videos ratio.

Blashphemy

Quite a neat Frankenstein-cable you made there, Vince. But if you’re selling it, a proper fix is indeed the safest bet.
Yeah, I don't see that ribbon cable fix lasting very long, it was a bit tight for room and looked a bit 'iffy' 👍
It still begs the question; how does one repair a ribbon cable? Many of the Switch cables are unique in pins and length, there's only a limited number you can salvage.
@@DaMu24 as far as I'm concerned I don't think you really can without it being too much work. Think if possible buy a new one to be safe.

Really impressive fix on this one vince, great video!
Just as I was about to edit a video about fixing my Xbox 360 Slim, Vince uploads! Can't wait to watch
I'm constantly impressed at the length you will go to fix something that most people would toss in the garbage. Love your work.
That is a Fix, brilliant! I can't hold my eyes opend after midnight you are a stronger man!

Fair play on this one Vince. Bloody hard work with surface mounted stuff, even harder with ribbons. Thumbs up.
