Then there was the sculptor that used a hammer and chisel on his wife. The court said "not guitly" . He just took his wife for granite. /facepalm
I use clay in my classes to show students what NOT to do so I don't have to ruin a piece of steel. Also that modeling clay is what my friends use in the special effects industry to make all their characters/monster sculpts.
Found it at a sewing/hobby store. Gave 1/4 of it to my "novice" nephew that I'm trying to "mentor." In actuallity I'm about 32 minutes ahead of him on the learning curve, and he's gaining.
I asked a question on a live stream a few weeks ago and you responded with this! I of course immediately acquired some.
Can confirm, working with this clay was a super useful analog in how metal moves - it also highlights to the uninitiated why it's so important to dress your hammers away from stock edges if you buy them new.
Thanks for the videos Mr Tye - I wish I could support you on patreon* - these videos are so super helpful. In the mean time, I'll be getting a book with my Biden bucks shortly.
Edit: I'm tired and can't write for good.
Been looking for something like this, thank you so much.
Now I wanna see you hammer some clay
I couldnt find clay that i coukd afford when i first started i nade a tiny silly putty knife over and over again. Helped me figure out why i messed up forming tip.
Just watched another video where a smith talks about using plasticine... He uses different colours to work out patterns in pattern welding (or damascus as it gets called a lot these days...)
It worked ok, but kept melting or catching on fire, am I over heating it, and at what temp do you heat treat? 😉
It's also useful foe estimating the raw stalk dimensions needed for a project.
Mold what you want to make, them role into the stalk size you have and measure the length.
It's like magic!

Do you use steel hammers, or wood or something?
