I'm a diehard Diana Ross fan but I had no intention of seeing this tour. Without Mary and Cindy, forget it. This made no sense to me - no matter Diana's rationalization. The heart and soul of The Supremes was Mary Wilson. It's inconcievable this was done without her. Diana should have carried on with her solo work if peace could not be made to have Mary involved. A tremendously 'missed opportunity.'
You missed a real treat. Diana Ross and her Supremes were fantastic. Mary was not missed. When they started singing, you forgot about Mary....at least I did. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing her and her Supremes. It really is all about the music.

@Tes7000 Let's us be exactly and perfectly clear! While Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard were the original Supremes....There was a total of 8 Supremes. As individuals left the group, a new member was added, and that individual became a Supreme as well.

This didn't work. Mary Wilson was shut out! She was VERY much alive unlike Flo and fan's rejected this false Supreme's reunion. The tour was cancelled due to lack of ticket sales.
She shut herself out. She was given the opportunity and she refused. Her bitterness and jealousy towards Diana blinded her up to the point of rejecting 4 million dollars for 30 nights of work. Cindy Birdsong let Mary negotiate on her behalf and she was devastated when she learned that Mary had rejected the offer.

I'm a long time Supremes' fan, since grade school in the mid 60s. I just thought it was such a shame Mary Wilson couldn't do this tour at least for us long time fans, not to mention $4 million. Nothing against Scherrie or Susaye, but the Supreme magic is missing here.

They choose the LAST MINUTE to OFFER her "4", so they could hurt her! She Immediately accepted, even TOO quick, and they told her when she did, "too late, the ship has sailed"! The ship had BEEN boarded and Loaded When they CONTACTED Mary! NO Ship sailed WITHOUT being thoroughly "charged"!!!! They played on her and then pulled the plug. I knew what was up when they finally told Mary, and sent the Press After her, but Ross said not a word to affirm, back up, support, NOTHING! I Knew THEN what was "up"! Speaking of..... "I Will SURVIVE"!. .

Why is it that we don't hear much trash talking about David Ruffin or Eddie Kendricks leaving the Temptations for solo careers or Michael Jackson leaving his group or even Beyonce? But when it come to Diana Ross it still gets blown up. Gladys Knight went on to a solo career as did Patti LaBelle and Smokey..It is what the star of the group does. @Ronald McFondle ok....you know as well as many fans know that Jean,Mary,Cindy were very popular and had a great sound. You know also that Berry Gordy was doing nothing to promote the group, regardless of continued hits. You also know that Jean Terrell could wipe out Diana vocally . The 60's Supremes were great, but the 70's Supremes were awesome with a more mature sound with better lyrics. Diana always had a strange vocal delivery, which was always half singing, half speaking with a very limited, weak vocal range. Jean Terrell on the other hand has a vocal range that can blow the roof off. So, stop with the lies, you are fooling no one.

It definitely should have been Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong with Diana Ross. However, as a fan, it is painful to see Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence referred to as Nobodies. They were Supremes in the 1970's. I celebrate them all-those mentioned above and the late Florence Ballard, Jean Terrell and Susaye Greene. I would love to have seen all of the former Supremes onstage together. How awesome would that have been?
There wasn't a great deal of enthusiasm for the Diana Ross and the Nobodies Tour. Meanwhile, Mary, and maybe Jean, must have thrown something at the television watching this.

All thid - just by virtue of the fact that she was a FOUNDING member & she was STILL performing as a bankable professional singer / star at the time. Being an ORIGINAL of ANYTHING is always more valuable than being a cheap copy. On top of that, though she wasn't a super star like Diana at the time, she was still a bankable STAR / singing act at that time. It wasn't like the Supremes was her only claim & she was just sitting at home for years doing nothing all her life waiting on another Supremes run. I don't blame Mary at all. She knew her worth & stood on principle & I'm sure her attorneys did too. This was no longer the 60's when she didn't know & hadn't the power nor influence to stand up for herself. That was the lesson she learned from her first time around & she put what she learned into action. It's called WISDOM. For that reason, this tour was NOT a success and had to be cancelled. Despite Diana's BEST efforts to gloss over it all as though she was insignificant. Mary knew her value, her card, the value of her card, and she played it. For the reason, the game Diana tried to play was OVER. To the fans, the fact that Diana would even try to go on anyway without her says a lot about her & in many ways, proved Mary's point. 🤷🏻♂️
True, but in order to have a trio you need a third member and (since Florence is deceased) the only person who could fill that spot is Cindy Birdsong. It wouldn't have worked with Jean, Scherrie, Lynda, Susaye or even Barbra Streisand.
Cholly Atkins continued to work with Motown groups beyond the 1960s. Both Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence recorded extensively as Supremes and have performed around the world as Supremes (at one point with Jean Terrell). Every lady ever in the Supremes could sing lead and so could and have Scherrie and Lynda and the standard for fashion, makeup, decorum and perfectionism never varied. Why fans are compelled to criticize individual Supremes and cominations mystifies Diana Ross...and me.

They were Supremes back in The seventies Scherrie was a Supreme from 1973 to 1977 Lynda was a Supreme from 1972 to 1973 And Yes! Mary is still alive, and Cindy too, but She is very ill 😥
As u can see shady Diana made sure Lynda and Scherrie made no reference to the fact they were Supremes with Mary Wilson. I applaud Mary for standing her ground and not kneeling to Diana the way these two are. It was set up all along that both ladies would be a part of that tour for Diana did not want to work with Mary nor Cindy in the first place.
What a great interview! I love Ms Ross! Thank you Lord for allowing my Mother and I to see her in Concert many years ago! She was amazing! She entered the audience and passed our aisle and she looked at us up close! Awesome!!! 💋
I still listen to the records to this day, (not just theirs; Motown records in general!) but gotta admit the live performance I saw ( Diana Ross, no Supremes with her)) struck me as a rather perfunctory exercise in nostalgia. I suspect what she really likes to do nowadays is sing those Billy Holiday songs and those great romantic ballads. Also, I met Mary Wilson once, and to me she and Florence were the real Supremes; what a great personality and classy lady!

I don't care what the naysayers are saying in this feed, I enjoyed this show, one of the best Views ever and I can't understand why people can't just watch a performance for what it is and stop all the negativity. The studio audience enjoyed it, I'm sure.
A great opportunity squandered. A genuine chance to bring ALL former living Supremes together in a spectacular show. Unfortunately arrogance, bitter rivalries, jealousies, grudges and money got in the way. It's a case of what could've been. Sadly now it's too late and will never happen. Why Diana insist on keeping I Will Survive in her live shows is a mystery- her version is truly awful it only exposes the weakness of her voice. It is another example of the many poor career choices she has made since leaving Motown & Gordy in the early 80s. The fact that her personal influence and cultural significance on female performers and the music industry is continually overlooked by todays stars & music journalists is outrageous and needs to be addressed.
Beyonce cites Diana as an inspiration which kinda blows your arguement. Whitney/Mariah/Janet Jackson all cited Diana Ross - she is an important stage in the development of female performers

The tour was cancelled after13 concerts. That wouldn't have happened with Cindy and Mary. Should have given them the money. It would have been historic. Turned out to be a failure.
The original Supremes are the ones I want to see from the sixties. Sadly, Florence left far too soon but Mary Wilson was still very much alive back in 2000 and she should have been a long side, Diana Ross. Le Ross who has been an absolute bitch towards Mary, although it has been so sweetly done, most people would not even pick up on it.

Mary said no to the deal. I watched her interview on 20 20. Diana was with Barry, well we all know that now and they had a child and I would not call her a love child either but a get ahead child. Diana had that class about her. Mary sings in Europe where she is appreciated. Diana had a gathering with loads of the famous people at that fancy, well known restaurant in Beverly Hills. She told security not to let Mary in, which I thought was heartless of Diana then Mary's son died. I wonder how Diana felt about that. Diana must have felt some misgivings.
Chloe wilson One more thing. I thought less of Diana because she never attended Michael's funeral. He loved Diana but she didn't want her name associated with a "pedo", which of course, was all done to ruin Michael's career. I think those charges is what helped kill him. They were part of The Supremes in the 70s, so yes they were members of the group later on. They were just not part of the ORIGINAL Supremes, which is why (I think) the tour flopped hard!

In 2000, plans were made for Ross to join Wilson and Birdsong for a planned "Diana Ross & the Supremes: Return to Love" reunion tour. However, Wilson passed on the idea, because while the promoters offered Ross $15 million to perform, Wilson was offered $4 million and Birdsong less than $1 million. Ross herself offered to double the amounts both Wilson and Birdsong had originally been offered, but while Birdsong accepted, Wilson remained adamant, and as a result the deal fell through with both former Supremes. Eventually, the "Return to Love" tour went on as scheduled, but with Payne and Laurence joining Ross, although none of the three had ever been in the group at the same time, and neither Payne nor Laurence had sung on any of the original hit recordings that they were now singing live. Susaye Greene was also considered for this tour, but refused to audition for it. Lynda didn't join until 1972, and Scherrie didn't join until 1973. A reunion without Mary or Cindy was always going to be a scam. With the death of Florence Ballard in 1976 and the death of Mary Wilson on February 8, 2021, there is no longer any possible reunion of the original classic lineup. The lyrics of "Someday We'll Be Together" are prophetic, and will only be fulfilled in death. A very sad and ironic ending for three Black girls from Detroit who changed the world.

The public, the fans,, made the Supremes what they are today. Its unfortunate we can never have a REAL original members reunion, because of money issues. Now, with Mary gone, its impossible. My view is very bitter now towards them. They never thought of the fans.

I'm a long time Supremes' fan, since grade school in the mid 60s. I just thought it was such a shame Mary Wilson couldn't do this tour at least for us long time fans, not to mention $4 million. Nothing against Scherrie or Susaye, but the Supreme magic is missing here.
.....And Berry Gordy advised Ross not to do the tour without Mary....he knew the public wouldn't accept the lineup.
"Not to mention" is Right! 4 million was NOT the offer to Mary..... And it was used to set her UP for the kill, cos she was never intended! They choose the LAST MINUTE to OFFER her "4", so they could hurt her! She Immediately accepted, even TOO quick, and they told her when she did, "too late, the ship has sailed"! The ship had BEEN boarded and Loaded When they CONTACTED Mary! NO Ship sailed WITHOUT being thoroughly "charged"!!!! They played on her and then pulled the plug. I knew what was up when they finally told Mary, and sent the Press After her, but Ross said not a word to affirm, back up, support, NOTHING! I Knew THEN what was "up"! Speaking of..... "I Will SURVIVE"!. .

You know also that Berry Gordy was doing nothing to promote the group, regardless of continued hits. You also know that Jean Terrell could wipe out Diana vocally . The 60's Supremes were great, but the 70's Supremes were awesome with a more mature sound with better lyrics. Diana always had a strange vocal delivery, which was always half singing, half speaking with a very limited, weak vocal range. Jean Terrell on the other hand has a vocal range that can blow the roof off. So, stop with the lies, you are fooling no one.

It definitely should have been Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong with Diana Ross. However, as a fan, it is painful to see Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence referred to as Nobodies. They were Supremes in the 1970's. I celebrate them all-those mentioned above and the late Florence Ballard, Jean Terrell and Susaye Greene.

All thid - just by virtue of the fact that she was a FOUNDING member & she was STILL performing as a bankable professional singer / star at the time. Being an ORIGINAL of ANYTHING is always more valuable than being a cheap copy. On top of that, though she wasn't a super star like Diana at the time, she was still a bankable STAR / singing act at that time. It wasn't like the Supremes was her only claim & she was just sitting at home for years doing nothing all her life waiting on another Supremes run. I don't blame Mary at all. She knew her worth & stood on principle & I'm sure her attorneys did too. This was no longer the 60's when she didn't know & hadn't the power nor influence to stand up for herself. That was the lesson she learned from her first time around & she put what she learned into action. It's called WISDOM. For that reason, this tour was NOT a success and had to be cancelled. Despite Diana's BEST efforts to gloss over it all as though she was insignificant. Mary knew her value, her card, the value of her card, and she played it. For the reason, the game Diana tried to play was OVER. To the fans, the fact that Diana would even try to go on anyway without her says a lot about her & in many ways, proved Mary's point. 🤷🏻♂️

True, but in order to have a trio you need a third member and (since Florence is deceased) the only person who could fill that spot is Cindy Birdsong. It wouldn't have worked with Jean, Scherrie, Lynda, Susaye or even Barbra Streisand.
Cholly Atkins continued to work with Motown groups beyond the 1960s. Both Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence recorded extensively as Supremes and have performed around the world as Supremes (at one point with Jean Terrell). Every lady ever in the Supremes could sing lead and so could and have Scherrie and Lynda and the standard for fashion, makeup, decorum and perfectionism never varied. Why fans are compelled to criticize individual Supremes and cominations mystifies Diana Ross...and me.

I still listen to the records to this day, (not just theirs; Motown records in general!) but gotta admit the live performance I saw ( Diana Ross, no Supremes with her)) struck me as a rather perfunctory exercise in nostalgia. I suspect what she really likes to do nowadays is sing those Billy Holiday songs and those great romantic ballads. Also, I met Mary Wilson once, and to me she and Florence were the real Supremes; what a great personality and classy lady!

I don't care what the naysayers are saying in this feed, I enjoyed this show, one of the best Views ever and I can't understand why people can't just watch a performance for what it is and stop all the negativity. The studio audience enjoyed it, I'm sure.
People wanted to see Mary Wilson and Diana Ross on stage together. There was so much history between the two. But there was also the music.
A great opportunity squandered. A genuine chance to bring ALL former living Supremes together in a spectacular show. Unfortunately arrogance, bitter rivalries, jealousies, grudges and money got in the way. It's a case of what could've been. Sadly now it's too late and will never happen. Why Diana insist on keeping I Will Survive in her live shows is a mystery- her version is truly awful it only exposes the weakness of her voice. It is another example of the many poor career choices she has made since leaving Motown & Gordy in the early 80s. The fact that her personal influence and cultural significance on female performers and the music industry is continually overlooked by todays stars & music journalists is outrageous and needs to be addressed.
Beyonce cites Diana as an inspiration which kinda blows your arguement. Whitney/Mariah/Janet Jackson all cited Diana Ross - she is an important stage in the development of female performers

Mary said no to the deal. I watched her interview on 20 20. Diana was with Barry, well we all know that now and they had a child and I would not call her a love child either but a get ahead child. Diana had that class about her. Mary sings in Europe where she is appreciated. Diana had a gathering with loads of the famous people at that fancy, well known restaurant in Beverly Hills. She told security not to let Mary in, which I thought was heartless of Diana then Mary's son died. I wonder how Diana felt about that. Diana must have felt some misgivings.

In 2000, plans were made for Ross to join Wilson and Birdsong for a planned "Diana Ross & the Supremes: Return to Love" reunion tour. However, Wilson passed on the idea, because while the promoters offered Ross $15 million to perform, Wilson was offered $4 million and Birdsong less than $1 million.
Ross herself offered to double the amounts both Wilson and Birdsong had originally been offered, but while Birdsong accepted, Wilson remained adamant, and as a result the deal fell through with both former Supremes. Eventually, the "Return to Love" tour went on as scheduled, but with Payne and Laurence joining Ross, although none of the three had ever been in the group at the same time, and neither Payne nor Laurence had sung on any of the original hit recordings that they were now singing live. Susaye Greene was also considered for this tour, but refused to audition for it.
Lynda didn't join until 1972, and Scherrie didn't join until 1973. A reunion without Mary or Cindy was always going to be a scam. With the death of Florence Ballard in 1976 and the death of Mary Wilson on February 8, 2021, there is no longer any possible reunion of the original classic lineup.
The lyrics of "Someday We'll Be Together" are prophetic, and will only be fulfilled in death. A very sad and ironic ending for three Black girls from Detroit who changed the world.
