This video is about to save my life.
I can now program drums to the hundreds of demo tracks I have recorded on my phone, before re-recording all the guitars. I can actually program drums specifically to my tunes and playing style, rather than anticipate in writing the drum tracks first. I'm not a trained drummer, but I can write drum lines with some elbow grease.
Then, I need to figure adjusting the tempo to what my final needs are. Sure, I can put it on a fixed tempo, but I want tempo variation, but a little more uniform than what I have right now. I have a bunch of parts that change tempo on a dime, but also speed up and slow down over time to add drama. That's my next goal.
Anyhow, thanks a bunch for this tutorial. I actually got Mac/Logic just because your tutorials made sense to me.

I'm a piano player and want to add drums to my songs whilst preserving the natural rubato of my playing. This is precisely the thing. Thank you!!

Some people out there still believe Logic's Drummer plug-in is nothing but a toy. This video should prove them wrong. In my opinion the added Drummer track is an instant perfect fit.
Another great tutorial Josh, thank you.

Yet another great video, Josh. Outstanding stuff. I really don't know how you find the time and energy to explore and find all this stuff out. Your mastery of Logic Pro X, Pro Tools, Melodyne, and countless plugins, is nothing short of astounding. And I've said it before and I'll say it again - you have a wonderful mastery of teaching, as well as a superbly modulated and clear voice. These are the best tutorials on UA-cam in my 'umble opinion :)

Fabulous video, thank you so much, this is exactly what I have been looking for.
I completed an acoustic-heavy Garageband recording in 2005 but without a click track: layered multiple acoustics, I played drums and bass via key-in with my midi keyboard. In the end, the overall mix sounded great (imo) but you can hear the slight, occasionally clumsy, tempo changes. I want to redo the whole song to put onto Soundcloud, but with proper drums using the Drummer tool and tighter bass. I attempted to redo the song (with a click) from scratch in Logic Pro X this weekend but I simply cannot replicate the guitars or the excellent stereo effects from '05. So, I've decided that I want to use the original '05 tracks instead. But, the tempo varies so much that it can't work without utilizing this approach.
Fingers crossed that I can make this work due to having so many tracks to Beat map. But onward ho, I expect many hours lay ahead. Thanks again for this lesson.

Only just getting back into music and pickup up on logic x having struggled with 9 feeling very bewildering. Came across your channel and I've got to say (as others have) your teaching style is supreme. The way you articulate the point with absolutely no faff or waffle is so powerful, logical (no pun intended) and clear. Perfect tempo and Straight to the point every time. Mastery in the extreme. So going to enjoy going through each and every one. Your simplicity is inspirational. Please keep doing it.

Josh, just want to add praise brother! This one gave me exactly what I needed to know. interesting thing about new logic's BPM counter...it doesn't work. It could be the recordings I tried it on, but I figured out a work around. Anyway, I'm really glad you are putting these incredible videos out there, cheers!

I'm amazed, as a masters degree advanced production student and graduate, and actually a logic certified pro this is one thing I didn't know existed, though it makes perfect sense that it does. Very useful in particular for more free flow forms of music like jazz or even classical music in terms of composing accompaniment without destroying the material by overusing flex time. Thanks!

Do you think that a normal phone recording could be used for this ? Because then I can record a few versions of a song and choose an appropriate 'take' to use as a beat map.
Then mute that track and record fresh over the beatmapped drums.
    Thanks.
I will try anyway.Thank you for this great video

Hi I am Beat Mapping one of my favourite Neil Young tunes so I can follow his performance nuances. One frustrating thing I find is that I did the whole song and then went back to review a couple of notes which were not quite beat mapped correctly. But when I deleted the mapping it moved everything after it and so it was no longer lined up with the mapping I had done. Is there a way to 'lock' the mapping so that it sticks to a note you mapped it to?

    • @austintaylor55
      @austintaylor55 5 років тому +1

Yes, you can use the "Beat mapping" feature on any audio track (midi as well). Remember that it doesn't actually change the audio or stretch the audio. It keeps your performance of voice or guitar the same. Beat mapping is making the grid match your human performance so that the click track moves with your fluctuating performance.

Exceedingly useful video!! Question: once the beat has been mapped and you can see the variety of actual bpm bar to bar...what bpm do you use as a reference when you then bring in a second audio track to tempo stretch?

  • @XChristianNoirX

Is there a way to tempo map by tapping the tempo?
I have a very busy track with distortion that Logic can't calculate the transients to properly. Tapping it out will be much easier in my case, as I can do it in minutes rather than taking hours.
There is no drum beat and I'm playing rhythm and lead simultaneously, with all sorts of speed ups and speed downs throughout the whole song. I'm trying to ultimately turn this into a guide track to program drums and then re-record everything. It also doesn't help that the recording was originally done with my phone's mic.

    • @XChristianNoirX

Figured it out. Turned quantize of and taped out 1/4 notes with a high hat and used that to make the beatmap.

Hi, very cool Info, Thank you. Is it possible to do beat mapping for multiple audio tracks? I recorded a Band with Drums, Bass, two Guitars and Vocals. Now i would like to beat map only the drums, then quantize the rest of the Instruments to that map with flex time. So far, flexing tracks to an existing map(the Drum Map) was only possible with tracks that i recorded AFTER the beat mapping. When i tried this in a project with all the Tracks already recorded and i did the beat mapping of the drums then, it did not work. I tried it a few different ways, but i did something wrong apparently.

I'm doing long 10-minute tracks of rhythm guitar in the new adapt mode in 10.4.6 and want to keep the varied tempo that was played. The problem I'm having is sometimes it misidentifies the tempo which makes it impossible to add a software instrument like a drum track to it. What is the best way to correct that? I haven't found any tutorials on editing the smart tempo when it's in need of correction

This is awesome, thank you! The only problem im having is that, ill find a tempo in Drummer which is very close to what I want so I've got the feel of the song, say 70 bpm. I'll then record my rhythm guitar without any click or drum reference (trying for a more natural feel). But when logic analyses the take for beat mapping it is showing DOUBLE the tempo, I wonder why this is? I can get drummer to play at half speed so it matches want I want but this limits my options a lot Any ideas MTHG?

Is there no way to add your own transient markers? I'm trying to beat map a fairly warm, dense piano recording, but not all the transient markers Logic has given me accurately translate to beats. The '+' sign doesn't appear to do anything either. Please help!
Update: I've increased the gain of the original file using Audacity and it appears to have detected more transients. It's mostly pretty good atm, but there's at least one bar which I still feel would benefit from me adding my own transient marker.

The only problem I have come across after closely watching your video is that the bpm counter won’t latch to anything acoustic or “singer songwriter”. Any tips? I’ve researched and found that logic has trouble finding the tempo in tracks like that... I’ve tried many different tracks and the bpm counter will not work at all.
