This is Patrice O'Neal on The Opie and Anthony Show, discussing the Michael Richards nigger rant controversy. Originally broadcast on November 21st, 2006.
Props to Jerry though for doing this. Hes a loyal dude man. Anyone else would disconnect from the guy and just say he didnt really know him that well lol
Anthony going after Richards and calling him a racist, "If you have to blurt out that you're not a racist, it means you probably are", seems very ironic now lol
comedians understand the situation with michael richards: he thought he could dig his way out of a hole where he was losing the audience with a shock laugh and it backfired horribly. horrifically. curb your enthusiasm covered it well, but the only missing factor was that insane comedic ricochet. patrice was such a positive voice to racism because he understood the humor of it. i think my favorite voice for anti-racism was tough crowd! there were so many good racist jokes. i especially appreciated their hair splitting over ethnicity; whites were joked about being irish, italian, scottish, german, etc, asians were clumped together between koreans, japanese, chinese, and many more. ETHNIC JOKES WERE MADE EQUALLY!
+Cody Price don't be dumb, if it wasn't for comedic value he wouldn't have shouted multiple times in a packed theater. Usually we look around first before whispering it. It's not rocket science.
Guy fealing he has to apolgise for a word, meanwhile the politicians and soliders killed milions all ower the world including their own, making the US out to be the devil, the land of contradiction indeed.
Yeah, that's how I interpret that as well. He just wanted to hurt those guys as hard as possible, so he used the most hurtful weapon. Instead he just hurt himself, poor guy.
"what any furious person would do" Baloney. Comics get furious at hecklers all the time, it's an occupational hazard; according to your logic "any" white comic, if that furious and dealing with a heckler who was black, would have brought up lynching. Which is not even close to true. Why do you want to defend Richards so much that you're willing to be illogical about it?
Good examples, I just doubt that their careers are TOTALLY OVER even though they're not on popular or mainstream outlets...Btw Imus got rehired soon after his remarks.
hulk hogan got MIIIIILLLLLLIIIOOONS dollars and forced gawker to become an asterisk.... awww what, he can't show up on WWE anymore until ppl realize no one has cared about it for many months at this point? :( sucks to suck.. Hogan is literally better off monetarily after that whole thing dude.
handsomebrick Richard's was very hot to black people on Seinfeld. I heard that many times by those I worked with. The group that he was giving a show too really took Richard's wrong. This is one time black people and Patrice took it all wrong.
Larry David took the "Kramer incident" and incorporated it into a storyline into an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which was also very funny, but I could also see it being a part of an episode of Seinfeld, as well.
@RN Anderson Yes, it was awful. What an ugly racist tirade Michael Richards went on. Then he tried to apologize and his apology was awful. He eventually went on Jesse Jackson’s radio show (at the time) to be interviewed by Jesse to try and get to the “why” of why he went on that tirade. Jesse asked if it came from a place of hatred of black people and Richards immediately said, “no”. Personally, I think there were some racist issues going on down beneath the surface, though he’d never admit to it. I’m sorry, if you’re truly clean of racist thoughts in your mind, you don’t end up going on a racist tirade. That’s just the way I feel. Those words don’t just come out of osmosis. In fairness to Richards though, many of us are racist to a certain degree (if not consciously, then sub-consciously) in this country, and we may not realize it until we are in a situation where we are being provoked or angered (justifiably or not) by someone from the black community, as Richards perceived himself to be. Richards is not the only white American who harbors racist thoughts. Unfortunately for him though, his tirade happened out in public and was recorded and posted on UA-cam for the world to see. It’s so ugly and vicious, there’s no coming back from that. His career ended that night, with the exception of being “thrown a bone” here and there by his buddies Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, who . . . credit to them for forgiving him, sticking by him regardless of whether it would hurt DVD sales of Seinfeld or hurt the ratings of “Curb”. Sorry to ramble on, but that incident really shows America how racist we deep down really are if some once famous actor who is no longer relevant who never outwardly showed a racist thought publicly before (as far as we know) unleashes a gallon of anger/hate on the black community, for what I’ve been told was not even being heckled hard. He was heckled, but it wasn’t like the audience turned on him or started it by calling him a “cracka”. 95% of comedians out there would’ve been able to deal with that level of heckling.
In retrospect, after Seinfeld's last testimony towards his pal Michael Richards, Jerry should have then pulled out a black/white cookie, took a bite and gave Letterman's television audience a wink.
To assume anything an actor does is sincere is just silly. Maybe he was, but it looked to me like he was under the gun and was forced to apologize when he probably would've rather not.
Patrice is so fucking right about this. We're all racists and we need to just accept it. Maybe then we can get actually have a meaningful racial conversation in this country.
The Washington NFL team name is racist. Don't you find the hypocrisy in that you cheer for a team that maintains the offensive name. If the Washington team was named the Black*****, you know Daniel Snyder would have to change its' name when the league majority is African-American. Where is the respect for Native-Americans? It's not by honoring him with a outdated racist term.
David Buswa Oh shut up, the only people Redskins offend are white people...how do I know? Because I am a Redskin so don't tell me we are offended by it.
Ken Michaels How dare you to tell me what I can be offended or not. I'm a full-blooded Ojibway that has lived on Indian reservations and experienced racism in my lifetime.. You can't be a true Native if you call yourself "redskin". You don't even know what First Nation you represent. You should call yourself an "Apple" if you think it is alright for a Jew/White Football owner exploiting my race for a sake of a few dollars.
I don't think Kramer was actually racist.i think, like Chappelle said, he had a bad set. And then got so pissed off, that he tried to say the worst possible thing he could think of
Yup, 100%. Also, I watch lots of streetfight compilation videos, and when young white people get enraged lots of them tend to yell the "N-word" at their white opponent, and I think they are doing it not because they're trying to racially insult their opponent but because they're so angry that their ability to rationalize has been diminished and they are just yelling the first most insulting thing to pop into their heads. It's heavily influenced by rap music. When I get really, really angry I tend to start uncontrollably calling my opponent boy, even if they're older than me. I'm even aware of how absurd it is in the moment but I just go with it, lol.
Norton's use of obnoxious irony is funny and creative: "How do you think it feels, whenever there's sunshine or good things happening, people go, must be a white man around, how do you think we feel having to deal with that...," "our perfect pink feet".... His line that Michael Richards ought to give Sinbad with no shirt on "a good scolding" is funny, too.
I hate how Patrice allowed himself to be used as cover for O&A's racism. And let's be real clear on the Kramer (and Mel Gibson) controversy. This wasn't about "white guilt" or "black leaders"...this was about money. The media will harp on any controversy and the corporate world who only cares about demographics and profit. Those who offend a demographic HAVE to kneel before the corporations who control entertainment, as they will not hire those who are injured demographically. Period.
In Michael Richards' defense, its somewhat known that he has a bad temper (see Sarah Silverman interview) and, not only heckling, but insulting him, while on stage, is a great way to bring it out. Oh, I agree 100% with your opinion of the whole Paula Deen thing. I'm honestly surprised that the N-word is the main focus of people when the dinner itself is a bigger "wtf".
The only thing I have against Patrice, is that he doesn't distinguish between racial and racist. Racist will destroy your ability to make an living. Racial is funny if done right, but have fun walking that tightrope...
Everybody keep going to pretend that michael richards is white and not jewish? You think Seinfeld would have gone on Letterman and angrily tell the audience to not laugh, it's not funny if this were a white guy?
As defined by www.dictionary.com, racism is 'a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.' A bigot, however, is 'one who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.' Clearly, then, what Michael Richards said marks him a bigot, not a racist. In fact, most of what people label as racism is, in fact, bigotry. Adolf Hitler was a racist. Richards is a bigot. There is a difference.
And like another person said, what if he's neither and just used a word he knew would get them pissed off? That's not bigotry or racism. It's just being an asshole.
Really? Norton is fucking hysterical, so clever and smart. He ties the show together well, Ant is pretty funny but neither of them have the personality that Jimmy conveys.
Yeah, that confrontation in Times Square was Anthony's "Kramer Incident". And Anthony's post-tweets were the recording of the incident. However, Anthony has since doubled down on that incident, whereas Michael Richards apologized numerous times.

powermasterjazz yes because it's the same as long as you minus the 400+ years of oppression. You know slavery, the illegal form of peonage that was practiced under of the guise of law, Jim Crow, State approved lynchings, segregation, redlining...etc
It will never be because black racism to white people is name calling , white racism is to black and white people is systematic. There's no power in "black racism" but white racism is backed by a power structure
Think Man, the more you want to cling onto the past, the longer it will linger unnecessary resistance to what is here and now. you're sabotaging yourself; for what? are you just waiting around for a time for black people to randomly strike and get back at the future white dudes for "equal oppression"? you realise how stupid that sounds?
patrice acted like he wasn't bothered by the whole thing but he was obviously, that's why he was calling him cosmo, passive aggressively insulting him, it wasn't the n word that did it, it was all the things said in between that were much much worse
@SethMcFartlane but that episode was about a race defined as " a competition to see who is the fastest" not "an ethnic group" so i think Jerry can safely say that he does not do jokes about race in this particular instance
Somehow I don't think the crowd would've given a round of applause at the end of the Letterman clip, if it had been Larry the Cable Guy who had been racist.
He was utterly obsessed with race because as a black performer he was constantly confronted with race in a way whites aren't. Pretending the US is a "post-racial society" is a luxury of delusional white people, not black comics.
I have no issue with the sort of racism you claim Patrice has because it's strongly grounded in fact. Racism against white people is just being educated about history. I'm a white male, BTW.
Sorry, but Patrice said that ALL white people are racist because Michael Richards is (seemingly) racist. That is a racist statement, plain and simple, and it cannot be explained away. It's no different than saying "I saw a black guy steal something, so all blacks are naturally inclined to steal." Also, the fact you're white is irrelevant.
Patrice was deluded when it came to race, period. Maybe he was right about the white people in the New York area, but his comments about "all white people" absolutely are not true about me.
Stand up comedians should NEVER apologize for any crap people give them shit for. The only exception would be if they have a TV show, then they need to weigh their integrity vs continued pay check since they work for advertisement money. If they need to do PR crap to keep a show going that's their choice and I wouldn't fault them for it. But if you're just doing stand up who are you sucking up to? Don't even respond to the media drama.
seth youve been doing a hack godfrey and peter griffin for to long, the african wasnt lazy kramer shorted the building out and it killed the alarm clock.
Wow, for patrice to talk about racism and then talk about it in this manner is just laughable. It is like he is completely unaware that is he is far more racist then what he is speaking out about.
I agree with the majority of your comment but that last sentence is irrelevant. The problem wasn't just that it happened to blacks, but that the practice was systemic.
We're beige, they're brown. We all bleed red. We all have babies. We all want our kids to have good futures. We all would be friends with ANY decent person regardless of skin tone. We all would hate any evil person regardless of skin tone. Time to grow up.
Also taken into account she wanted to create an Antebellum Southern Dinner party (if my information is correct - but I cannot verify at this time) in which all of the servers would be Afro-Am dressed up as indentured servants or slaves. How many guests would have been an ethnicity other than of European descent? One might argue that is an irrelevant point and we should continue to focus on her use of the N-Word. I disagree in that it has more relevancy to evaluating her true character.
EXACTLY. they even admitted that they came in 20 min late, talking, making a scene, ordering drinks - they got what they deserved. They don't know or give a fuck about anybody else but themselves.
I visit Europe a lot. One thing I adore about Europe is that I can have a conversation with a Black person without worrying about them discriminating and hating me for being white. I am seriously considering moving out of this country for that and other reasons too. I never owned a slave. My family never owned a slave. I treat people all the same, and cant stand taking the rap for mean people who happened to be white (thru history).
Imagine that, but instead you being black ⚫ and talking to white people not really knowing who deep down hate your Fucking guts just for your ethnicity... a very confusing moment. But thanx for being one of the good guyz 😉😉😉
Yes the problem was systemic, but I think it is highly relevant that we are so focused on a word that does provoke very strong emotions in people, that we allow it to overshadow some of the more insidious issues. Take for example the Paula Dean debacle. People are incensed over her removal from the Food Network and subsequent persecution in the media. Personally I'm glad she's gone, not because she used the N-Word, but because of her false sincerity and lack of diversity in her show.
OMG OPIE ACTUALLY HAD A GOOD LINE AND NOBODY CAUGHT IT! “ your phone card ran out” lmao
He repeated a line that Anthony had already said, and a joke that Rich Voss has made to black callers in the past. Opie has never had a good line.
@@MyMomDrank I disagree but to each his own
If you're not old enough then they didn't get it
Props to Jerry though for doing this. Hes a loyal dude man. Anyone else would disconnect from the guy and just say he didnt really know him that well lol
Agree
I’m jokey racist, not hateful racist ;)
he should’ve disconnected from him lol
In more recent times he would've disconnected
That was a different era my dude
"im not racist I just find black people less enjoyable than my white friends" LMAO bruh thats fckn gold.
And they all laughed as bros (Patrice first)
Times used to be better when we were openly playful
Patrice made so much sense here… so refreshing to hear this take.
Michael Richards apology made people of all colors cringe worse then the outburst tirade
I bet even racist people cringed at that
Anthony going after Richards and calling him a racist, "If you have to blurt out that you're not a racist, it means you probably are", seems very ironic now lol
When has Anthony said he's not a racist? He will say the stuff he says isn't racist.

Patrice was and thanks to youtube, STILL IS! the man.
The funny thing is that they demand an apology, and then ruin his career anyway. That's how it always goes, the apology never does anything.

Look to the cookie.
Any time I come across a video featuring Patrice, I hit "like" automatically.... I don't even need to hear it first. I know it'll be gold.
Ryan Watts LOL.....yup!
Ryan Watts I hit like if I disliked so we mistrust all reality, just like normal there is no truth
Haha.... What?
"Mistrust all reality"?
What the fuck are you talking about?
Miss that big guy, haha
His apology on Letterman was the most sincere one I have ever heard.
i dont know about that, but at least (maybe except for the "im not a racist") he didnt try to lie his way out of it

there was also an episode where Elaine thought she was in an interracial relationship and tried everything to find out if the dude was black.

Patrice spoke some real truth on this one. Of course he would get hated on for it.
I hate how Patrice allowed himself to be used as cover for O&A's racism.
And let's be real clear on the Kramer (and Mel Gibson) controversy. This wasn't about "white guilt" or "black leaders"...this was about money. Bringing up lynching because you're angry at someone for repeatedly interrupting you and saying you're not funny is psycho. There is no defense of it.
oy vey
Purely from a comedic perspective, Michael Richards couldn't have apologized as Kramer, because I'm fairly sure Kramer wouldn't have apologized.
I like how ever since this happened, people refer to Michael, as Kosmo. lmao
This is such an uncomfortable interview to listen to.
Twilight Princess you must not listen to a lot of O&A lol
Why doesn't Mel Gibson deserve a second chance?
Mel is done. Hollywood is JEW. So bye bye Mel
Oh, I agree 100% with your opinion of the whole Paula Deen thing. I'm honestly surprised that the N-word is the main focus of people when the dinner itself is a bigger "wtf".
I like kramer.People that dish it out have to be prepared to take it,especially in a comedy club.
Is Opie comparing himself and ant to Seinfeld and Kramer appearing on Letterman as delusional as I think it is?
SNL dropped the ball when they didn’t have cosmo play Donald Sterling. >_
Patrice and Jimmy are gold together
The only thing I have against Patrice, is that he doesn't distinguish between racial and racist. Racist will destroy your ability to make an living. Racial is funny if done right, but have fun walking that tightrope...
He has done in certain episodes.
Everybody keep going to pretend that michael richards is white and not jewish? You think Seinfeld would have gone on Letterman and angrily tell the audience to not laugh, it's not funny if this were a white guy?
Patrice is all for reverse TOLERANCE. God is loving his comic presence up there!!!!
I wanna see Michael Richard's take on Patrice's take of Michael Richards take on black people.
He was "shattered" said Seinfeld.. Perhaps this was his humiliation initiation into a secret society.
The lynch mob 😂😂🤣🤣
As defined by www.dictionary.com, racism is 'a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.'

CST Patrice didn’t catch that, or he would’ve laid into him for that lmao
ant: he could have called him a deadbeat dad-
jeemy: he did.
*DING!*
lmfao!! that was some fucking great racist humor right there hahahahahaaa
Really? Norton is fucking hysterical, so clever and smart. He ties the show together well, Ant is pretty funny but neither of them have the personality that Jimmy conveys.
Black comedians make a living making fun of white people...🤔
Patrice is one of the most honest and funniest people I have ever listened to. He went way before his time.
It's kinda weird that it was the racist charge that killed Anthony's spot on this show.
what killed it was anthony being racist. not charge.
Yeah, that confrontation in Times Square was Anthony's "Kramer Incident".
And Anthony's post-tweets were the recording of the incident. However,
Anthony has since doubled down on that incident, whereas Michael Richards
apologized numerous times.
How does black racism work?
The same as its works for everyone.
Categorizing people based on the color of their skin.
"All white people are racists" quoth the m an who went on racist tirades against Asians. "That word (N^^^^R) doesn't mean anything to us anymore". Is that why Richards' career is over?
It doesn't mean anything to us when WE use it... but when white people say it they use it in a VERY derogatory manner. And there lies the difference.
I think Michael Richards is a great person. I don't blame him at all for what society thinks
Lol
White racism should just be accepted like black racism is, then we can finally have peace.
powermasterjazz yes because it's the same as long as you minus the 400+ years of oppression. You know slavery, the illegal form of peonage that was practiced under of the guise of law, Jim Crow, State approved lynchings, segregation, redlining...etc

Not buying it. Thanks though.

JuanDeSoCal All white people are racist. So are all non white people.
Patrice was deluded when it came to race, period. Maybe he was right about the white people in the New York area, but his comments about "all white people" absolutely are not true about me.
he's talking about "white" people not the so called white people.
Everyone has full liberty to say whatever the hell they please when they're angry. Emotions get the best of everyone. Besides, Kramer bombed.
First of Comedy Central, then on Letterman.
Michael Richards is crying all the way to the bank.
seth youve been doing a hack godfrey and peter griffin for to long, the african wasnt lazy kramer shorted the building out and it killed the alarm clock.
yes, a great word for patrice, He was a Breath of fresh air. :)
He started it! Me first gimmie gimmie. Why do I have to go to bed!!?
Wow, for patrice to talk about racism and then talk about it in this manner is just laughable. It is like he is completely unaware that is he is far more racist then what he is speaking out about.
Patrice admitted that he is a racist. He said he wants white people to be racist out in the open just so he can be racist.
Takes all the wind out of his sails when he talks shit.
keep hoping everyone is as bigoted as you apparently are.
rustedromeo
keep backpedaling and refusing to admit your own ignorance and inability to comprehend words people say in context
No back pedaling here regardless of what you choose to believe.
I agree with the majority of your comment but that last sentence is irrelevant. The problem wasn't just that it happened to blacks, but that the practice was systemic.
What’s that song in the beginning?!
Question......what did Patrices grandmother call brazil nuts?
I was 20 before I realized that you catch a tiger by the toe.
Nice black label society intro music

We're beige, they're brown. We all bleed red. We all have babies. We all want our kids to have good futures. We all would be friends with ANY decent person regardless of skin tone. We all would hate any evil person regardless of skin tone. Time to grow up.
Patrice = anything funny about Opie and Anthony.
So......by your logic, if I say I am a racist
That means I'm not?
Billy Burr in Philly.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Also taken into account she wanted to create an Antebellum Southern Dinner party (if my information is correct - but I cannot verify at this time) in which all of the servers would be Afro-Am dressed up as indentured servants or slaves. How many guests would have been an ethnicity other than of European descent? One might argue that is an irrelevant point and we should continue to focus on her use of the N-Word. I disagree in that it has more relevancy to evaluating her true character.
Damn, this was so cringeworthy.
how?
EXACTLY. they even admitted that they came in 20 min late, talking, making a scene, ordering drinks - they got what they deserved.
They don't know or give a fuck about anybody else but themselves.
5:08 unfortunately, that never will happen as long as people want money or power.
Patrice's rant at the end was warbling nonsense.
I loved Patrice, may he RIP... but he was a pretty racist guy.
+Brandon Mr. Rockabilly Big man to talk about someone after they're dead in UA-cam comments.
+RueTV the dead don't care what we have to say about them
Jorge Stevenson so fucking what? We are ALL racist. It's ok. The sooner we can all just admit it we can finally progress as a species.
Fuck I miss Patrice
Thats literally what it means.
...truly
Love you and miss you O Neal
click 3:21 over and over again. You will fucking die laughing, lol
Patrice was really brilliant about this silly race shit
I still miss Patrice.
@SethMcFartlane i think you might be confusing this with a different episode or television program altogether
Cool story bro 😂😂😂
But I'm sure you being sincere. Not sure what black people you've met. But that's sad.
Imagine that, but instead you being black ⚫ and talking to white people not really knowing who deep down hate your Fucking guts just for your ethnicity... a very confusing moment. But thanx for being one of the good guyz 😉😉😉
right, cheers mate. I see where you are coming from. thing is they can call me anything and I wont give a fuck.
4:11 That so, Anthony?
0:30 1:00 5:25 11:10
is that right or are you having a laugh.
5:25 my perfect pink feet
Jerry SEinfeld was only funny on the show. he had a good cast to
in the words of doug stanhope " if
"if you're parents raised you to be hurt by words you had shitty parents "
me too, my dude
Yes the problem was systemic, but I think it is highly relevant that we are so focused on a word that does provoke very strong emotions in people, that we allow it to overshadow some of the more insidious issues. Take for example the Paula Dean debacle. People are incensed over her removal from the Food Network and subsequent persecution in the media. Personally I'm glad she's gone, not because she used the N-Word, but because of her false sincerity and lack of diversity in her show.
