  • Bet you didn't expect to hear metal music from a wavetable chip, huh?
In 1991, SNK released their groundbreaking Neo Geo fighting game Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, Takashi Nishiyama's spiritual successor to Street Fighter, which he had designed for Capcom back in the late '80s. There were some folks who had worked on Fatal Fury who decided to leave around 1992 to join Atlus. There, they would make an arcade fighting game of their own named Gouketsuji Ichizoku, or Power Instinct (not to be confused with Rare's Killer Instinct) in English, which was released in 1993. The game definitely has an SNK feel to it, both in its gameplay and its music composed by one of Fatal Fury's composers, Toshikazu Tanaka. The song in Power Instinct that I feel exemplifies that feel the best is Day of the Killer, the theme of Italian strongwoman Angela Belti. The game's lore notes that Angela is a major metalhead. Luckily for her, her theme in the first game is a killer (no pun intended) heavy metal banger. The distorted guitar samples in it definitely bring to mind Geese Howard's theme and plenty other Fatal Fury tunes. I finally decided to do a cover of Day of the Killer, once again going with the Namco C30 WSG in Furnace. The lack of sample channels obviously meant I had to leave out the song's vocals, which I cannot for the life of me figure out what they're supposed to be saying. I'm very pleased with how I managed to use that classic Namco bass wavetable to recreate the distorted guitar, and I'm surprised how much one of the wavetables I recently extracted from Power Golf worked out in replicating the pinch harmonics. It is a bit unfortunate that the drums came out pretty weak, but the noise generation on the Namco C30 WSG doesn't have much of a kick to it. Plus, I didn't have an extra channel to use a square wave in like with my Akumajou Densetsu and Hebereke covers, so it is what it is. Besides that, everything here turned out great, and I'm eager to hear what you guys think of it. Enjoy! ^w^
