Another primo educational video bro, cheers! The how to spearfish series helped me smack a few kingfish last summer. Have just bought a 90 roller gun with a reel, maybe I shouldn't be jumping into using it just yet though...
You prolly dont give a damn but does anyone know a method to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow forgot the account password. I love any help you can offer me
@Jaime Imran thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Awesome video man. Love your work. I noticed a massive difference in the number of shot chances I got once I managed to chill out when kingies came in. Great advice.
Awesome video as always. The one time I was vortexed by kingis is when I truly wanted them to go away lol had been shooting them a few days in a row and was trying to get snaps at the time. So true that they are curious when you don’t care about them
You mentioned the throat grunt technique in another video and I tried it on a pair of kingis that came past me today, both turned around for another look which was cool but I missed my shot lol
Great video. I liked your comment about using a reel too soon. I only dived shore entry dives with a float and float line and it worked great, but I think new divers need one or the other as it would be a potential problem trying to land one of these fish without a reel or float line, due to their dirty fighting tactics and immense power. Keep up the good work.
I have been spearing for a couple years, but I’ve only been able to go in kelp forests and shallow (0-20’) reefs. I don’t have a reel on my gun right now, but I am heading to San Diego for a spearfishing trip next month. Would it be dumb to go after a king if I don’t have a reel? Also, do you have any recommendations on a good reel and line for a cheap price? I have a JBL 110 woody and would love to put a reel on if I can get a quality setup without breaking the bank
Any good places for Kingi around the South Island for a boatless diver willing to swim out quite a bit , please? Thanks for your lessons! Cheers from Chch
I have almost zero South Island experience. The kingfish episode on the how to spearfish episode will tell you how, where, when etc to hunt them however so you can check your local terrain etc. (patreon link on UA-cam somehwere)
Awesome video, super helpful. I was out today and I tried strumming my rubbers, brought a school in out of nowhere but they were mostly rats. Do you think it depends on size when it comes to strumming vs gulping or is it just personal preference?
Grunting is not really a technique to bring them out of nowhere if they are not in the area - it’s more of a technique to use when you know they are nearby and you want to increase your chances of them coming to visit you while you are down on their level. Kingfish are generally more curious of a grunt and in my tests (at depth) and they make a more notable turn in to me from a distance compared to when I’m lying on the reef and watching them out in the haze and strumming rubbers (should’ve included some footage). The size depends on where you are diving or what is in the water in your vicinity. I have to stress it’s not a surface technique it’s something I do on the reef when I know kingfish should be in the vicinity (just so ppl aren’t floating around on the surface grunting looking like something out of a fuct up horror film). In saying all of this strumming can be used on the surface to create some sounds and commotion as well as slapping fins on the surface or hitting the water but generally just descending into the right area and waiting is good enough to bring them in 90% of the time.
This guy is the King fish whisperer, He probably even smells like them ;) But seriously that is good advice explained exceptionally well; I live in gods country now; and most of what you said is pertinent with pelagic up here as well. I remember being surrounded by a curtain of them, about 79-90 of them in tighter formation, all eyes on me in about 15m at Point Perpendicular JB back in the eighties, it was so beautiful I forgot to take the shot. I'll show my boy the video see if he is keen to go South for a look/see. Kind regards for the memories and good advice: Alex
Phillip Esch cheers mate. Because I don’t have a boat I don’t have that luxury so I use navionics underwater topo maps to get a good idea and then just have to put the yards in under the water. I’ve included a lot of the underwater topo maps and diagrams explaining the maps in the how to spearfish series, I will look at making something for UA-cam once I’m done editing the current projects !
Have been sharing this with a heap of newbies I’ve been taking out. It’s hard watching them make all these mistakes. I keep telling them slow down but you explain it way better. Another quality clip.
Cheers man, i've seen a few vids of guys employing techniques but still very desperate, mad grunting all the way from surface to kelp and desperate movements. I have to say to any new guys reading this that the grunting is used sparingly as it is not that necessary but helps when fish are being stubborn.
Excellent informative video, fab footage and great narration, was looking through your videos for essential gear for newbs, gun, wet suit etc, can you post a link if you have anything, new subscriber, Perth, West Oz...
Awesome video. Have you done much Spearing around Aus? Is there anything characteristically or different about them? Should I be searching for the same drop offs? I have been trying to apply the same techniques from here without much luck. Quite possibly I’m just shit a spearing.
I lived in Aus and shot a bunch. I have a video of you scroll way back with northern NSW kings. From what I’ve seen there is bugger all difference in how they act - same species. And they act different depending on current, water temp and what else is going on. The best advice I can give is to watch the big video on Vimeo I made called “techniques for spearfishing yellowtail kingfish”. Use the promo code ISOLATE for 50% off - vimeo.com/ondemand/howtospearfish
Aquatic Rehab Spearfishing, I have watched it, I will watch it again to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I don’t have a boat so I’m having to beach start or rock start so I am a bit limited with spots. I see them all the time and can hang out with schools of smaller kings however the schools of larger kings don’t seem to want to play ball.
Thorfinn986_doesn't_do_average it’s all subjective bro and there’s a lot too it so it’s hard to cover in a UA-cam reply. Essentially the basics are understanding co2 tolerance. Also understanding the dangers of over breathing / hyperventilating. I’ve made a 54 minute video on how to increase breath hold for spearfishing and the link is in the description to this video if you want to check it out. Also if you want info on breath hold courses locally DM me on fb or insta I can put you in the right direction.
@@AquaticRehabSpearfishing I am sure about that but still if you check out what spearfishing in Greece looks like you will see what I mean. You are lucky to live in NZ and have this amazing ocean full of life around you. Greetings from Bulgaria, eastern Europe btw :)

@Jaime Imran It worked and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my ass :D
That top down stone shot was gangsta.
I attract Kingys with a blonde wig, lipstick and bottle of Prosecco, sometime Bronzys too
KOANXXL I’ll film that, can bring some power heads incase it gets out of control. Maybe some pepper spray for the boat ramp too
Awesome video man. Love your work. I noticed a massive difference in the number of shot chances I got once I managed to chill out when kingies came in. Great advice.
Nic Vickers yeah man it grows 10 fold.

Yeah that's the ticket. They are there when you need a big chunk of fish and the rest of the time just part of the aquarium.
Really informative video. Thanks for the tips legend 💪🏽. Hopefully I’ll be on my first Kingy soon
You mentioned the throat grunt technique in another video and I tried it on a pair of kingis that came past me today, both turned around for another look which was cool but I missed my shot lol
Luca Waring cool and not cool. Next time
Another good vid mate, thanks, love to try this one day.
Nice video, These are great fish, they love to dive and punch above their weight. Thanks for the tips
Awesome man thanks for all the great tips and advice. Shot my first kingy last weekend off a shore dive. So stoked!
Man all your videos are so helpful and engaging, I'm heading out this weekend, so hopefully I can finally land my first one! (y)
good luck mate

50 years ago we all had bike bells on our guns. Very very effective!
bow72au interesting is that the old rotary bike bells? I could imagine that sound travelling a long way underwater.
@@AquaticRehabSpearfishing Yep that's the one. We mainly had home built timber guns so had to have something tinny.

hey mate i was just wondering do you use berley for kingfish if you do what kind of berley do you use
Another epic vid. Just out of interest. What Rob Allen gun are you using on those Kings?
Great tip mate- enjoyed it... 🙏🙏
Great observations of both fish and human behaviour. 👍🏴☠️
Great video thanks for sharing!!!!👌
Nice video 👌👌👌keep making them

JKG HBAY thanks man it took a while for me to start doing some outdoor narration. Pink maomao next and then GoPro tips

Awesome video !! Thanks 🙏
Do you needa be able to hold your breath for a long time to hunt kingfish? Like do you just sit on the reef and wait
yeah it helps but you can also shoot them out of the schools that will visit you on the surface for example 06:23
Cheers, ive been spearo for quite awhile but two things im lacking are breath hold and kingis haha must be where im choosing to dive aswell
Can’t wait to shoot my first kingy, what size roller were u using?
Just a 90 mate
Awesome vid mate but the links broken :(
fixed

He uses a 90 bro
How long do you reckon it takes to be able to hold your breath for a long time, does it need a special technique?.
