I moved to O'ahu at age 10, almost 11 (in 1985) and was taken straight to Sandy's by a neighbor. After getting drilled on 2 or 3 waves and having a bloody nose, the lifeguard came out and said, "You have no business here. Go to Waikiki, then Ala Moana, then Diamond Head and then you can come back after when you know what you're doing." By high school I was dawn-patrolling Sandy's on Saturday mornings. (Now I'm landlocked in the middle of the US and only get to watch waves on UA-cam.) Great review Zeke.
This is legit the single best "spot discussion" I have ever watched. So much knowledge, and the knowledge is relevant to actual surf and local culture. Well done, man. Seriously, 10/5 video.
Discussing pecking orders = 10/10 content. Every other surfer avoids this. Thank you. All of us non-Hawaiian people are just curious about it to be honest. I live in Atlanta and we've never even surfed other than Florida a few times, so the whole thing is cool and interesting to us. All of the local how's, why's, and do's/don'ts are legitimately interesting. It'd be dope if on the super popular spots you'd tell us where you and the other famous surfers exist on the line up and whether or not you burn each other, etc.
Even at queens I saw local Hawaiians pyscho snap on tourists who were renting longboards but didn't know proper surf etiquette. Like taking off on stomach on local Hawaiian longboarders lol. I can't even imagine the spots he says has actual pecking order
@@hamonrye9823 Anyone brown including Asians claim to be locals in Hawaii, but they are no more local than the whites. There’s only a handful of pure Hawaiians in Hawaii and only a handful of true locals.

This was so useful. I live north shore so it was so good to get a break down of all the waves and how localized they all are. You should do a north shore and windward breakdown. I feel like alot of the time people just don't know where they should be surfing and these types of things help
Glad I found your channel. Probably the best video laying out town surf spots. You'll find me in Waikiki still cutting my teeth but always looking forward to the day I can get out on my own to less crowded spots. As a newcomer to O'ahu I appreciate specifically the pecking order. I never want to put myself or others in a situation where I'm out of place. Mahalo!

Aloha Zeke...your excellent O'ahu South Shore Surf Spot Review was totally unexpected...it was especially cool to hear your take on each of the spots, using a 5-Star rating system...Mahalo
Yeah... Nostalgia... Surfed kaisers everyday for some summers some 20 years ago... Got to surf it by myself a couple of times around 2-3 oclock, when a surprise swell would pop up..
Sick episode with a great explanation. Love Diamond Head and Queens. This will definitely help a lot of people to have fun in the water! Mahalo, Zeke🤙🏼
Damn good review zeke. I’m from CA and queens is one of my favorite spots in the world, killer commentary on pecking order, if you don’t know what you’re doing, play at Canoes (which is also one of my favorites)
I love Pops and Threes. I learned to surf in Waikiki as a kid, then every Winter from age 20 to 30 I would spend 3 weeks between there and Sandy's. Live in Ireland now but dream of bringing my family to where my love of surfing started. Glad I discovered your Channel. Great stuff. 🏄
Thanks Zeke for the review. Please allow me to add that courts has an expansive pecking order. The hoard of locals on the main peak has a website, charity drive, golf tournament, Christmas party, and summer BBQ. The numerous uncles (and aunties) out the back have 10-foot boards and surf 7 days/week. Now add 10 or 20 highly skilled and local SUPs that surf there every day, a niche of native Hawaiians, and a tight crew of talented shortboarders on the inside (especially if there is a bump). They all know each other, and they will know right away that you are a traveler. I’ve been surfing there nearly every day (April through October) since 1998, I am reasonably skilled, friendly, polite yet assertive, and even after 24 years I’m still quite junior. With the heavy crowds, I'm mostly getting scraps. Just for example, I’ve even seen locals violently ousted, chased out, humiliated, and forever banned for things like “calling off uncle” who went in front of them (OMG don't EVER do that!). As a transplant, it’s not my place to welcome or dissuade you as a traveler, nor will I pull the lame "I’ve been here longer” card. If you come to courts and you take turns, I will be honored to share my scraps with you. But I humbly recommend that you do not choose Honolulu as a summer surf trip destination. It’s packed and it’s local. You would have a more relaxing time by choosing Malibu for a surf trip. I would rent a board and paddle on out if you are here with the family or for other reasons, though. Best bet for all of Honolulu is 3rd shift after 11am when the retirees are done and everyone else is at work. Winds are often offshore all day, but wear sun protection.
i think his view may be slightly skewed because he is about as local as it gets. I'm sure he could paddle out at any spot on Oahu and get a ton of waves, whereas the experience of a visitor would be much different.
Nice review. Growing up in Hawaii Kia, Sandy Beach was our go to bodysurfing spot, but totally agree Sandy Beach is not for the beginner or even occasional bodysurfer. Drive a little further more to Makapuu, your survival rate will be better.
Thanks for the great video! I surf a lot in So Cal, but am visiting Oahu for the first time this summer. Super nice to learn where I can surf without getting in the locals way besides beginner spots like waikiki
That was excellent Zeke, great instructional video on those waves including the appropriate warnings, explained very politely. It should be included in a surf Hawaii video.
I was born and raised in Hawaii. I moved to Cali a few years ago. I still come back to visit every few months. My fav spot in town is kewalos for sure.
I once had a magical session at (Tennis) Courts. Early morning, super glassy, hardly anyone out, 4-6 and some hollow ones. Etched in my surfing memory forever.
I surfed courts for 20 years,my favorite Southshore wave.I had it myself on big Northshore days, but the wrap around swells would produce some of my best bigger Southshore waves.
Zeke, this video is so good and useful. I think the convention and visitor's bureau should hire you. I love surfing but mainly as a spectator. Sandy beach is my favorite spot to watch the Uncles having fun so effortlessly in waves that would injure others. The name I always heard it called was Break Neck Beach, I think it was well earned. Too bad some people don't realize that you skipped places for a reason. Love watching you surf in so many tournaments. Much respect! Mahalo
Thanks Zeke, this has been super helpful this week surfing our way around Oahu as a family. Staying at a condo at Ilikai we are looking right at AM Bowls and Kaiser’s. we had Queens uncrowded, just some friendly locals and turtles. Got Lani’s, Rockpiles and Rocky point on the North Shore, something for all of us.
I went to navy diving school at Pearl Harbor in the 80’s and want to take my wife to Oahu as a bucket list trip. She’s never been. I really enjoyed the breakdown of the waves on different beaches, as well as the very nuanced rating system and explanation of the rules and factors. For the final segment, I especially appreciated the safety warnings on beach break waves for bodyboarders and bodysurfers. I'm both of those -- I would love to see a segment from you, or a guest on your channel, about what it took to be able to get enough experience and technique to do those beach break waves, and whether even experts still get hurt in those conditions. I think of the Hawaiian beach break bodysurf contests, which are amazing to those of us who fear beach break and won't go out in it. Understanding what is going on to not get injured would be great content.
Thank you. This is great. I am from New Jersey and surf here. I saved for past few years so I can get vacation in Hawaii where I hope to surf a lot. Again thanks and this is super helpful.
Great vid. You should make a North Shore video, or even windward side. Like Makapu’u and stuff, I’m really wanting to work my way up to bigger waves. I’ve only really surfed at Castles and Bellows.
Isn’t there a break called Publics, which is a long paddle out from the public swimming area? In the early 70’s I used to surf out there a lot. The locals were not always happy to see me out there, but I was always super respectful. I saw some bad things happen out there to people who did not respect the locals. It was a very shallow break on lower tides and a really long swim when you lost your board.
Awesome video. Girlfriend and I visited Oahu a couple weeks ago. Took 1 look at that shore break at Sandys.. yep. Can tell right away not for us. Way beyond our ability. I watched another tourist get cartwheeled head over heels 3 times and dumped on his head. Lifeguard came and I could tell, told him to stay out of the water

I surfed magic island at ala moana a bunch across the canal from bowls. Its can get pretty big and sketchy with the large rock wall cove. Some people even went right but its mostly a left.
Bombara's... Probably one of the best waves I've ever seen on the South shore just like courts it's got to have a lot of swell and when it's big enough bombara's is mind-boggling good... I have photos of that place that would blow your minds... Easy Easy 🤙🏻🤙🏻

I surfed magic island at ala moana a bunch across the canal from bowls. Its can get pretty big and sketchy with the large rock wall cove. Some people even went right but its mostly a left.
Zeke, still waiting for the North Shore surf spots. Good to know where I can surf with no pecking order
Bombara's... Probably one of the best waves I've ever seen on the South shore just like courts it's got to have a lot of swell and when it's big enough bombara's is mind-boggling good... I have photos of that place that would blow your minds...
Easy Easy 🤙🏻🤙🏻
There's some good spots by Aina Haina. Long paddle but smaller crowds out there and fun :)
Awesome video; thanks for the break down off the south shore!
