    My artist did a rib tattoo on me and went too deep in some areas. So I went back to him a few months later, after it was healed and he went around the edges with white ink. I wasn't sure how I'd like it, but it actually fixed most of the issue!

    hello from Montreal (Canada)!! i've been DIY tattooing for 2 years, on me on pigskin and on friends , i have check a lot of tattoo techniques, read a lot of book about the art of tattoo and talk to a lot of artist... At 9:45 you offer some excellent advice on how to address the problem on a completely healed blowout.
    This brings up another question about the mysterious "COVER-UP" tattoo. Design challenges aside, technically if the ink is properly applied and resides safely in the dermis, how do cover-ups even work? For example; if you want to cover a yellow rubber duck tattoo with a blue bird, wouldn't the overlap areas be green (or visa versa) if the ink resides at the same depth? Do you have a MASTER JONO-way of thinking about how you approach the problem of cover-up tattoos?
    As always, we LOVE and appreciate your generous sharing of experience and talent - BEST REGARDS!

      Hi Bruce, thanks again for your kind comments. That's a really good point you raise. I'll get to work on a cover up video. The subject is so vast but I'll try and condense it for you. Basically if a completely healed tattoo has for example yellow in it, & you go over it with blue, it almost certainly wont go green. That said, if you were to do the same thing over yellow that you've just tattooed, then there's a good chance it would go green. This is because the ink is really fresh and has just been applied, so essentially you'd be mixing the colours together under the skin. This doesn't happen when the ink is fully healed. A large part of getting a cover up to work is chosing the right colours that are going to overpower the original tattoo. I'll explain all this in the video. Hope this helps. As always I really appreciate the feedback.

    My first tattoo was in the epidermis. It looked like it was in when I left but as the tattoo healed the ink came out and by the time it fully healed the tattoo was gone. Lol no one believes I had gotten a tattoo there. Then years later I got another tattoo which is completely blown out, it causes me discomfort still to this day years later. It’s very raised and the lines are blurry. It didn’t appear blown out right away when I got it done, but overtime it became apparent. It was also my most painful tattoo I’ve gotten.

    That's some golden advice right there people, if I may add also you can set up your machine for only 2 or 2.5 mm of the needle to come outta the tip when the armature bar is touching the front coil at the lowest postion which can make it less likely to blow out especially if you are aware of the difference in skin thickness in different parts of the body, all in all awesome video mate, cheers!

    Thanks for another informative video, I am a subscriber to your channel too. You have a great way of explaining things clearly and demonstrate the issues really well. I had a small blowout on the edge of a heart tattoo which was done with a rotary machine and a number 3 round liner (just as you mentioned)
    All of my other tattoos have been done using a coil machine and a number 5 round liner and I have never had a blowout using this method. I have been trained using a coil machine too!

    Awesome video mate 👍
    I'm having problems with color packing, when i go swallow, the ink seems very solid and even into the skin but when it heals most of the ink comes off, definately there is no scaring. When i go a bit deep i tend to overwork the skin. How do i know if i tattoo the skin in dermis layer and it'll not come off? Is there any signs that I'm working on the right dept? As you said in this video that if you tattoo in epidermis the color won't be solid as in the dermis layer but i see the color evenly and solid, but it comes off when healed. I'm using direct drive rotary so there there is no give also. I stretch the skin properly and i don't think my needles are bouncing off the skin because i'm using cheyenne hawk pen and thunder. Sorry for my English but i hope you got my point. Thank you

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  7 років тому +2

      It could be a number of things going wrong if the ink is falling out. It could be the actual area you're tattooing. Hands, fingers, feet, elbows, knees are all pretty bad areas for healing and more often than not will need touching up. It could be cheap ink. Always use a well known top brand ink like Fusion, Eternal, Dynamic etc. It could be you're not putting the ink in consistently deep enough. Maybe it's the right depth in some places but not in others. It's could be that the person who's been tattooed hasn't looked after it properly when healing. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

      Like he said, you could be going too shallow, some areas especially in the back are thicker..though if the colors look nice and consistent then maybe you aren't going the wrong depth but it's just bad after care from your client, also if you are irritating the skin using alcohol during tattooing that could also effect how the tattoo will heal and how the colors will look

    Hey there, just want to clarify the dermis layer is 2mm deep correct? So if you're practicing on fake skin that is 1.5 mm thick soybeans you not be going threw it? Or because the fake skin is harder is using about the same downforce the needle just isn't going as deep? Please clarify for me

    • @JonoSmithTattoo

      Sometimes blowouts take a while to show under the skin and can slowly spread further over time as the ink spreads out in the fat layer. If the tattoo has been put in at the right depth it won’t blowout but if it has gone a little deep the blowout can develop more over time.

  • @CHUNKYNUGGET666
    @CHUNKYNUGGET666 7 років тому

    Gd vid but I don't really see how rotaries are riskier than coils for lining, one of the advantages of rotary over coil is the ability to adjust the speed on the fly, lining certain areas and certain skins can be enhanced by slowing or speeding up the machine. Many rotaries can be bought with different stroke lengths too and if you ride the tube or not the stroke length shouldn't cause blowouts by itself. Ive seen many blowouts with coils and was guilty of a few in my early days. Not trying to pick just giving some perspective I'm currently loving the Swashdrive Slide2 for lining, grt lines no blowouts;)

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  7 років тому +1

      The reason I say rotaries are more likely to cause a blowout than a coil is because a rotary will do a full rotation with the needle going from its highest point to its lowest. So no matter what speed it's doing, the needle is going to travel it's whole cycle. Coil machines can be set to 'bog' in the skin by setting just the right power. So basically the needle has enough power to put the ink where it needs to be but has got the power to drive it all the way to cause a blowout. I've done a full video on this which explains what I've just said in loads of detail. It's called 'Why you should learn coil machines first'. Thanks for your comment bro, I appreciate everyone's opinions.

    • @CHUNKYNUGGET666
      @CHUNKYNUGGET666 7 років тому +2

      ok bro each to his own and its a gd thing to debate! I guess what your not pointing out is that many rotaries have a thing called "GIVE" which works the same as bogging down. I stand by what I say and I still don't think stroke length changes the risk of blowout, stroke length doesnt determine how deep we penetrate, personally I put needles in at a certain depth, stroke means nothing at this point, the general reason stroke is short on liners has nothing to do with blowouts, its because we are putting in a thinner ink and we want less gaps between punctures and more punctures to create a solid line! Stroke length is grt for different types of ink and for putting ink in differently, ie long stroke for colour but it doesn't go in deeper, it simply picks up more ink and keeps it in longer for grt saturation, works grt with a slow machine too! lotsa science goin on

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  7 років тому +1

      You do make good points and you clearly have a really good understanding of the science bit behind it all (because there is a fair bit of science behind tattooing). I know what you're saying about some rotaries having 'give'. But in my personal experience, the 'give' on a rotary is nothing compared to a coil. I'm not saying the actual stroke of a machine will cause a blowout. I'm saying if you 'float the needle' as apose to 'riding the tube', so for example, you've got a coil machine & a rotary side by side and both with the same amount of needle hanging out the tip. If the coil is powered correctly, I personally think that machine would have a far likely lesser chance of blowing out if the tattooists went too deep. Where as the rotary, even one with a give system, tends to do its full cycle, kind of like a sewing machine. I'm not saying a coil won't blowout. I'm merely saying in my experience a coil is less likely to blowout if it's setup correctly. Again though, tattooing is so individual and everyone has their own personal experiences. I suppose if it wasn't there'd be one machine and one method and there'd be no debate.

    • @CHUNKYNUGGET666

      cool bro I hear what your saying, I guess I'm just pointing out some things for the novices. Thank you SO MUCH Jono! Talk about "ask and ye shall receive" :0)
    All of your video analogies are super helpful. I enjoy every one. 666 brought up some interesting questions about ink. Like ink viscosity, and how to determine when to use what. For instance, I know Eternal has 8 different consistencies for black alone (not sure about their colors). And, he mentions putting ink in with different strokes in order to achieve specific results (i.e., longer stroke for improved color saturation) Perhaps another video for another time?
    Mostly, I wanted to send Love and Gratitude for the selfless sharing of your infinite wisdom! As always, THX brother.

      Thanks for the comment! I really do appreciate every comment & feedback. The reason I set up this channel in the first place was to maybe help out a few people that might be struggling with a few things. So when I have a request for a video (like you did) if I can shed some light on it, I will. I know how hard it can be in the beginning and let's face it, the tattoo industry has a LOT of big egos and haters. To quickly answer your question about ink. Generally speaking, the thinner the ink, the more it's suited for lining. The thicker the ink, the more it's suited for colour. This is a really big generalisation. As for the 'stroke'. The 666 guy is absolutely right. Generally speaking a longer stroke is more suited for colour packing where you are looking for solid saturation. Shorter strokes are generally more suited for lining as the needle can pick up the ink and pop the lines in a lot quicker with the shorter stroke. Loads more videos in the pipeline. Take care bro!

    How do you treat and heal a scar from tattooing???

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  3 роки тому +1

      A doctor once told me ‘a scar is a scar’ meaning you’ll never get rid of it, but you can tattoo over them to disguise them. Some scars have slightly tougher skin so slightly more pressure is needed (not all the time though) and healing aftercare is the same as it is for any tattoo.

      @@JonoSmithTattoo what do you tell your clients to do to heal their tattoos?

    It's really annoying that if you are a begginer artist, with an apprenciceship and make mistakes like that, other tattoo artists, with more experience will tell you to stop tattooing because you are shit to it. And it really makes me affraid to ask for some advice or anything, even tho, there are numerous reasons to why people continue to tattoo on their own and really wish to do that. I dont think people who can tattoo so good now, never ever experienced doing a blow out..
    Personally i feel like i dont push the niddle too much because if i do it lighter than i do normally, the ink wont go to the skin. And still the ink spreads a little under. And my question as a begginer artist who really really wants to do this for a living because i just love the process of doing it, the pressure while tattooing will get better with time and practice? It will come naturally eventualy?

    • @JonoSmithTattoo
      @JonoSmithTattoo  3 роки тому

      The thing with tattooing, like most things, you get better with practice. The more you practice, the more natural the machine will feel in your hand and the more confidence you will gain. Eventually you will be able to just ‘feel’ and know if you’re hitting the right depth. It doesn’t happen overnight, but if you put enough time and dedication into learning, it will come. Also don’t listen to negative people and their negative comments. The people that try to pull you down with negativity are just trying to make you feel as miserable and pathetic as them. Hope this helps and good luck!!

      Sounds like you could have a blowout. The inner bicep area is particularly prone to blowouts if the tattooist isn't careful.

    I got a tattoo on my inner arm about a week ago and I think its blown out. At first I thought it was a bruise but it hasn't faded much. Mine looks more like a blue halo affect around the entire tattoo, but the tattoo itself is small, so the blowout isn't anything extreme. Do those types of blowouts usually fade over time? All the lettering is fine, I just have the blue haze.

    • @JonoSmithTattoo

      Sounds like a blowout. They can fade a little over time. If it looks blue it could be the tattooist has used Kuro Sumi ink. That tends to have a blue haze to it when it heals.
