What is often missed in histories of the KdF wagen (VW Type 1) is the role of Hans Ledwinka. When Dr Porsche was designing the car, many of the details appeared to be cribbed from the work of Ledwinka, who was the chief engineer of Tatra in Czechoslovakia. The two engineers often discussed the design for a "people's car" and Porsche had seen Ledwinka's prototypes, which bore a remarkable similarity to the later "beetle". Eventually, in 1965, VW paid Tatra one million deutsch marks in an out of court settlement.
AFAIK all German auto manufacturers during WW2 used slave labour, including Daimler Benz (Mercedes), Auto Union (Audi, Horch, Wanderer & DKW), BMW and Ford Germany (under state control).

All true! Friends of mine own Tatras and I've read a bit about them. I drove one of theirs, a 1947 type 87 Tatra- it was a 56 Volkswagen from hell! You could feel that big V8 pulling the car outward on turns. Scary until you got used to it.

@@lawrencelewis2592 when nazi officers took over Czechoslovakia during the war, they were warned to be careful driving large tatra cars on bends.

@@thomasburke2683 I've heard that German officers were forbidden from taking Tatras, eventually. That one I drove took a lot of getting used to. One friend had pre-war type 77 which was a right hand drive limo. He couldn't practically drive it in the city as he could not make a 90 degree turn due to its enourmous turning circle. He had to back up and then go forward again on streets in his neighbourhood. Not fun when cars are honking at you. He eventually sold it. I wonder how a car like that would have worked on the streets of Prague?

There was a third engineer, Bela Barenyi (Hungarian), involved. Basically, Ferdinand Porsche (Austrian), was better in selling than the other two engineers. Actually, Barenyi did the basic design (rear engine, rear drive) first, AFAIK.

There is so much more to this story- many car manufacturers submitted their own plans for a people's car. Mercedes, for one. I've read that at a conference, one man said that they should consider the cars of Joseph Ganz and Edmund Rumpler. Realising that they were both Jews, his statement was quietly withdrawn after some dirty looks.
The whole savings stamp program was giving the company an interest-free loan. That didn't get settled until the middle 1960s when people that had the stamp books could get credit on a new car or settle for cash at a lesser amount.
One of the main reasons for having Ivan Hirst get the company going again was that Wolfsburg was close to the new border between East and West and there was some fear of a communist takeover if people didn't have employment. The history of VW is endlessly fascinating. I've owned several myself.

To those who say Porsche cribbed kdf from tatra or the Czechoslovakia; Tatra and Czechoslovakia had not existed in the history of the world before 1922, and that area had been part of Germany and Austria, and Porsche had been building the greatest race cars in the world of the early century. Porsche's design firm did work for Tatra and almost every automaker who had achieved any prominence. This so called 'cribbing from Tatra' is just another attempt to extort money from VW, which they did do and I believe Porsche paid them some token sum to go away. But almost every other small broke auto company made some spurious claim and took a shot at extorting Porsche expecting the anti German mood of the time would allow them to slam dunk a false claim without any solid proof. In almost every case under investigation it was proven the reverse was true, and the company had in fact copied Porsche's designs, or were only using the metaphor of similarities without any other solid evidence, hoping the courts would award them an unearned payday for their failed auto's.

I recommend reading a book entitle Dan R Post 'Volkswagen Nine Lives Later' 1966. Amazon has a couple for sale but not cheap. Goes into great detail on the beetle history, lots of early photos and some original idea sketches reproduced dated as early as 1930. I bought this book in 1977 and still have it. It is a fascinating book published when the beetle was at its height in popularity and still 6 volt electrics. Shows photos of WW2 4X4 beetles etc.

Read how the Porsche Piech family control VW, while VW Group owns Porsche cars, but Porsche SE holdings owns 51% of VW group...brilliant creative financial paperwork.
