  • LEADERSHIP VS MANIPULATION | JOCKO WILLINK
Jocko emphasizes a clear difference between manipulation and leadership. The manipulator employs every available means to influence the team and achieve personal gain. However, once his modus operandi is discovered, team members will no longer follow him and may even feel betrayed. Conversely, the leader always acts in the interest of the team and its well-being, and this altruistic approach is evident to his collaborators. Furthermore, the leader inspires trust and respect in his subordinates, which leads to increased motivation and productivity. In summary, manipulation is selfish and short-term, while leadership is selfless and long-term.

Jocko just described my old supervisor. The guy was a manipulator and opportunist. I’m glad I transferred out of there.

You made the right choice. In certain work environments, there are often examples of people who manage to gain authority and power without any real specific competence that justifies their abusive and outrageous behavior. Robert Greene detailed many such situations in his book 'The 48 Laws of Power', and soon we will start covering it too. I sincerely wish you the best of luck for the continuation of your career! Bye!

Don't care how smart you are people will figure out over time if you are genuine or a fake. Leaders I've found are unapologetically themselves

Excellent observation. Unfortunately, in work environments it is easy to find people who instead manage to get away with their manipulative actions without ever having to pay the price, often aimed at covering up their incompetence. Knowing human nature is essential to have the right clues in this regard and develop the necessary skills to defend oneself and bring to light the black sheep, so that their positions are filled by people with the right communication skills and competencies for the role.

LATINOS UNIDOS LATINOS THE STRONGEST: My Brother, that was very well spoken. I Agree with you 👍💯
Manipulation is evil in its nature to bend people to their will and take from them. A Leader is different who stand on righteous principles to empower strengthen and give to that person or community something that will eventually benefit that person, team or the community. Very much the essence of a CHAMPION 🏆
Once again Thank you, My Brother 🦾🩸⚔️🔥👊

Technically tho…. Leading is manipulation for their benefit XP
(Manipulation isn’t inherently a bad thing, just that it is mostly used as a negative, e.g. you can manipulate someone that is on a ledge, to not jump).
Although I find it is a mix of both, since a leader benefits when those he leads benefit.

Yeah, except that is complete bullshit. True manipulation makes people believe that they are doing the actions FOR THEMSELVES! The whole point of manipulation is that your victim doesn't realize any manipulation is actually occuring. True leadership is showing the lead that the action and potential sacrifices will bring about a better situation in the long run and improve the current situation.

You're right. What Jocko is saying is that manipulation and leadership use very similar tools to achieve a goal. They are subtle means and involve the way of communicating and presenting a certain situation to the interlocutor. The role of a leader is to understand the strengths of each individual that makes up his team, it is his duty to defend and enhance it so that the objectives are achieved and this allows the group to grow.
It is necessary to understand how fragmentary and fickle the will and real awareness of each individual is, as we tend to choose an instant benefit rather than a sacrifice that could lead to a much better future situation. And despite this being clear to everyone, it is extremely easy to find someone who hits the snooze button on the alarm from 6:00 to 8:00 every morning.

I would suggest listening again to what Jocko said. He says “Eventually you will look at me for what I am.” So yes, in the beginning, you may not know you’re being manipulated, but eventually you will see it.
Read through this quote. It will take 10 seconds to read. Notice the wisdom in the text.
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. YOU WILL RECOGNIZE THEM BY THEIR FRUITS. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ...

Hello! Thank you for your comment.
Jocko is comparing two different situations. The words he uses are these: 'If I'm a manipulator I can get away with that for a little while but eventually you will look at me for what I am.'
The same goes for the opposite case, as the person realizes that the leader is working for the group's victory and to help its members grow. Of course, this is not a scenario that applies in all cases and environments, power plays, black sheep, bad wolves... are everywhere, and that's why a true leader is invaluable to his team.
