I recently had a DNA test and I found out I'm 50% Irish. My results were from Connacht Ireland. Thanks for the video and I hope to visit one day.
May I ask what company you used to give you a county location?
@@lisarossiter9809 was ancestry for me
It's actually amazing the best thing I did ever was a dna test my family too come from Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon.
I am proud to have 76% Irish DNA I have encountered such a interesting journey with ancestry on line. I am now in contact with my DNA matches and this wouldn't of been possible otherwise.
IRELAND where my heart truly belongs.
I plan to go home very soon.
Erin go bragh 💚🤍🧡
Same here. My mom's mom grew up in Carrowteige. Bout as remote as you can get. Curious to hear where everyone's ancestors were from.
Me also.. Just recently did my DNA through ancestry... My fathers mother was from Connacht also her mother was an O'Malley and her father a Mullen.... So I need to learn more... I am so very proud to be 🍀🇮🇪...
Half English half irish guy here. Been really loving learning the Irish language and history for my mothers side of the family.
Go raibh maith agat!
I’m having a very hard time finding my Granahans. I know it’s Mayo and I know who they are but I just can’t find anything about how the name came about or where they originated.
Thank you for your videos. I love language and how it evolves. Migration theories and also learning about the people along the way.
I am currently researching the Hardiman family from Ahascragh. Mountbellew , Ballinasloe areas of East Galway .The Hardiman connections i have were tennants and farmers on the Clonbrock estate in Galway . any info kindly appreciated
My mother's family came from County Mayo in Connacht, where the O'Conchobhair/O'Connor family come from, but we don't know of any O'Connors in her family.
We always assumed my father's family name, Conner, evolved from O'Connor-but we were surprised to learn that Conner is actually a British/Scottish name with no direct relationship to the O'Connor name from the Connacht region of Ireland!
@Whip it Thanks...oddly, it turns out my father's family name Conner is actually a Scottish or Northern English occupational name entirely unrelated to O'Conor! My mom's Irish family don't have any O'Conors among them, although they come from Connacht.
There's also the O'Connor of Iraghticonor who were based at Carrigafoyle castle up until about 1648.
Hi could anyone help ,my great grandmother came from ( County Mayo ) her name was bridget Hynes her mother was Hanora Hynes this was about 1810 ,18 40 we have ( 1831),but this is Questionable .her husband we think was name either John Hynes born 1821 in Ireland. Any information would be gratefully received.
My late Grandmother was a Cosgrove from, Geesela, Erin, North Mayo.
Where were the Cooley family from ?
What Part of Ireland has the Surname FAHLE And MOORHEAD PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE AN ANSWER .THANK YOU ...
Morrhead , Morehead or Morehead is a mainly northern name in Ulster.
Fahle I have not heard of but it might be Farrel or O Farrel which Is I think is in the center Midlands around Offaly.
Niland is my name, a big family in Ireland and uk. Had my DNA checked and my dads family are originally from connacht Ireland, my family now are based in mayo so not far. I'm in uk. My dads family are 100% irish. Wanted to check if there was viking background as I know about the irish vikings.
Yeah still lots of Nilands around. Common name

Galway the third largest city in Ireland what country are you living in
Ancestry came back with my DNA results as being 100% Irish and Scottish. Three sides of my family come from Connacht region. Thanks for the video.
Christy Dolan Well Ancestry came back with me being 98% Irish and Scottish. 2% British, welsh, North West Europe. Both my parents where born in Ireland. I can trace four generations on my dad. Five on my mother side. My mother’s father was from Northern Ireland. Which is just a jump from Scotland.
The Scots came from Ireland, they are Irish turned foreigners. Learn your history.
@Christy Dolan
You literally just reiterated my point. The Scots came from Ireland. Also, you seem like a hateful and toxic person. Have you considered therapy? 🙏
@Christy Dolan
There are lots of Scottish people in Ireland and Visa versa. You don't have to go back to the 5th century to the clan Scot it is happening now .
I myself did my DNA and it came back 98% irish 2% Welsh Scottish . So it's not a far off thing
I did my DNA too and came back as 98%Irish 2% Welsh Scottish. But my mother was not believing it as her maiden name was Steakum and she said thecame from Germany in 1800s but I don't know . Maybe from 1800 to 1979 German blood was washed out .
"Sligeach means Shelley." Does anyone know the correct spelling of the Shelley to which the Behon Academy refers? I ask because my famine immigrant great-grandfather was Micheal Shelley and he came to the US from Connacht with his brother or cousin, Peter Shelley. My father's Irish DNA substantiates this by landing him firmly in Connacht. Other paternal surnames are Kilkelly (Galway), Cannon, Ryder, Dillon, and Lynch. As noted above, my classic famine immigrant Michael Shelley came from Connacht (ostensibly Mayo or Roscommon), and not from Munster (which seems to have many more Shelley/Shelly surnames in the Kilkenny and Cashel area. Any insights? Many thanks in advance.
7 th generation Texan here. Family name is Jordan (McSuritan) from County Mayo and Clan Ross from Scotland (if not mistaken) 🙂🇺🇸 🇮🇪 🏴
Ross is also irish

Uí Fiachrach had a Sept in Maigh Eo called Fir Ceara. That's where my ÓCoigligh roots are from.
DNA results stated that my family is from the Connacht area. I have always been told that my family was from Sligo. My family "Hart" has always believed that the "O" was dropped upon entering the states.
Lots of People called Hart and Harte in Sligo. Same name but the spelling gets changed along the line. It’s very common in Sligo. In Irish the name has an “o” in front of it. I don’t know anybody who uses the “o” in the English version of their name here.

My family name, I feel, is as follows I've found so far. O'Comain/Commons > Cummins > Cummings > Cumings (my maiden name) 🤔 I did a DNA test that shown my Scandinavian line migrated to Ireland and then to Scotland and then to the US via New York. My ancestors migrated legally from what I heard from family.
My great grandfather was O'comain (Francis Monroe) from Ireland, He changed the name to Cummings when he came to America.
@@jaycummings8116 oh I see, I need to correct myself, I was misinformed and led to believe we were Irish, turns out my line comes from the Comyn's clan in Scotland. John Comyn, was one of the guardians of the Scotland throne and was murdered by Robert the Bruce (his fellow guardian who spawned the Stewert line once he took the throne) when he was confronted about his treasonous behavior. Comyns threatened him with going to the King with what he was doing. The rest of the clan either died rising up against Robert the Bruce or fled the country.
@@missfoxglove8989 I'm still confused about how the name appears in both Scotland and Ireland. I had always assumed he came from Scotland until my uncle (his grandson) told me he came from Ireland and changed the name from O'Comain to Cummings. I've seen both versions of the name in Ireland and was told one was just an Anglicized version of the other. I only new him by Cummings. I wonder if that part of the clan went to Ireland after the whole "Robert the Bruce" thing? I know the Comyn clan held many castles in Scotland that were torn down after their defeat, but so far it's been difficult to learn anything about them in Ireland.
@@jaycummings8116 it's quite possible that your part of the line. They had many surnames under their fealty. I wouldn't be surprised.
@@jaycummings8116 I'd go further back then, find your surname in the Cummings clan history. It's easily googled cross research with Scotland history.
My mother's maiden name is McGoldrick. My grandmother's maiden name is Lynch
Lynchs are generally from Connacht. I'm of the Lynch clan too through my grandfather's maternal line. We are distant kin.
lynch too! :)
Just got my DNA results and turns out I'm from Connacht, I had no idea.
Hemochromatosis is very high in these areas, and very underdiagnosed.
Yes it is. I believe this is the case for O blood everywhere. Tragic.
Any idea what the root cause of this may be?
