You mentioned one doesn’t need the expensive equipment such as a sewing machine which is very high dollar for a hobbyist. Decades ago I made a knife sheath which I still have. I used a “spacer strip” along the edge, burnished the edges, glued with barge cement and hand stitched. I used the two needle method for stitching and always got great compliments on the hand stitching. People were amazed that it wasn’t done by a machine. Just brought back some old memories to an old man.
I dont mean to be off topic but does anybody know of a method to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost the account password. I would love any help you can offer me.
@Kash Chance Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Good advice at the tail end. I have no expensive machinery. I make wallets, purses, moccasins, belts etc etc. So far its just a hobby that a really enjoy. With all that I have made I feel I'm learning the trade an owing my skills. Steve
I ended up buying a whole side from Tandy $150 shipped. I thought it would be best to start with a thinner material so I went with 5-6oz veg tan. That’s a little thin for belts and holsters but I have done five sheaths for my fillet knives which works fine. Going to use the rest to make a couple welding/blacksmith aprons.
Absolutely, it will help tremendously in keeping your stitches nice and neat. Clean and neat is what sets your work apart from others. I was looking at some hand made leather wallets just this weekend. What stuck out to me the most, is how sloppy the stitching was.
Could you do a video on hand stitching, and gear it toward a younger audience, let me know and I will bring it up for my kids. I think having them learn a craft is an excellent idea, and letting them see first might save me a buck.
Learning something new everyday, video, etc. keeps the mind young and growing; I am 39 but I listen to those who ate older and younger. You can learn something from anyone, good or bad. 😉 Awesome work Killinger.
Good morning Chris!!😀😀 I see winter has definitely arrived in Ohio. If it stays that way for a couple more days you would be able to do a little ice fishing. Nice pile of leather!! You're lucky to be so close to Weaver. Take care my friend!!😀😀❤
The good, sound advice is always appreciated, I have put together a couple precut sheath kits but haven't designed my own. But, I have axes that need sheaths, so I guess I should do some leather shopping!
First, thank you for the informative video. But if I may say please. Talking about the weather while driving to and from the leather shop didn't do much for me. But the rest was well worth it, so thank you again.
I got the “best selling “ starter kit from amazon $35. Not the best quality. The stitching irons are good the scribe Tool and the edging tool not so good. The stamps are junk but didn’t need them. It was a good starting place to find out what I needed. I have a speedy stitcher that works great for sewing. Also got a starter rivet kit there for like $10
Nice video thanks 😊 exactly like you said it’s not until you go and start doing what you want to do and learn from your mistakes only then will you be great at what you want 💪👍😊
thanks for the great advice. i am wondering what size of leather you are using. i dye my own leather but thinking about getting into pre dyed leather. take care

Hand stitch looks way better than what a machine can do. It's a good skill to have. Glad I was able to bring back some memories!

so for a new guy about to dip his toes into leatherworking....would you recommend getting a stitching pony for hand stitching?
Absolutely, it will help tremendously in keeping your stitches nice and neat. Clean and neat is what sets your work apart from others. I was looking at some hand made leather wallets just this weekend. What stuck out to me the most, is how sloppy the stitching was.

Think @weaverleathersupply sells what your looking for?
I like the rivets smooth on both sides, looks awesome. What grit do you typically use on the 2 x 72?
80 to 120. Just depends on what I have laying around.
First, thank you for the informative video. But if I may say please. Talking about the weather while driving to and from the leather shop didn't do much for me. But the rest was well worth it, so thank you again.
Just "B" roll. Skip around if you like. Appreciate the support!

I get asked that a lot and I dont have a good answer. Haha! It depends on what your doing really.
