- At Aanandaa Permaculture Farm, we filter and clean our grey water with the help of reed beds.
In this video, we explain how we built the reed beds and use them for managing the grey water from our out-house.

Thank you so much 🙂
Good explaination, Thank you.
Mam please share more details on this water management. Maybe a book pdf guide link or a video which has detailed explanation n can be use as blueprint to do the setup. Thanks in advance
You are doing great job mam
Thank you. We try our best
Great explanation.
Glad it was helpful! Do share it with like-minded people :)
awesome idea
Thanks a lot
One suggestion.. Maybe a small rocky slope could be added upstream of the tyre pond. It would help with oxidation. Anyway, the commendable part of the design is that it's not dependent on electricity, motors, pumps, etc.
Thank you for your suggestion. I am planning a grey water system and will keep your suggestion in mind. Cheers from Santa Cruz, California. Nelson
Thank you. I learnt a lot with you and enjoyed watching :-)

Where can I get these 'reed plants' from? Please guide
Excellent.
Thanks for listening
hi, after some times, is there no need to replace the embedded gravel etc? if yes, how many years required?
Its been 13 years and we have not had to replace it!
Do you cut the weeds or keep it as it is? Weeds roots might penetrate the plastic sheets which will leak the water directly into soil.
There are no weeds, because there is gravel and reeds.
@@farmaanandaaSorry, let me correct my question. Do you cut the reeds ? Will those reeds penetrate plastic below? Overall how do you maintain it😊
Your videos are helpful understanding permaculture.
Just want to ask if reed bed can handle soap water from bathroom.
Yes, absolutely
Is the pond water ok for fish & aquatic plants?
Yes
thank you.now i know how to clean the kitchen water. where can you find the weeds.
please google on how to find the reeds
not weed - its reed. If you use weed, you will end up in jail instead of farm :)
Hi maam
At what level does the filtered water from the Reed bed go into the tyre tank, is it at the bottom of the trench or midway or right at the top
About half way
THank you.
I have a question.
If we dont use soap/shampoo, can we directly use this gray water for plants without filtering ? We can use traditional natural soap/shampoos so our plants wont have issues with gray water.
Yes you can!
This water is best suitable for flushing I believe
...please help..for apartment living - How much time does a one sq foot of Reed bed need to decompose and work- on say 1 liter of grey water?

@@mohammadshahid4588 sounds lovely! Are you planning to visit Aanandaa with your team anytime soon?
how do you stop excess water coming from other fields surrounding your farm? do u make a boundary or some short of raised mud bank?? plz suggest as its causing a problem creating such a farm in my area as fields r interconnected and they release water into other nearby fields when they don't need water. And also how do u prevent the inflow of chemicals mixed with water which has been used on nearby farms. I need to grow leguminous plants to restore my lands and it requires very less water. also can u suggest some plants to restore soil which can grow in excess water and also they fetch u some money value
Maybe chanelling excess water to one side/trench and planting thirsty tree species like eucalyptus would help
How do you manage mosquitos?
When water goes underground, it does not breed mosquitoes. Only standing and stagnant water breeds mosquitoes.
Does the water in the pond percolate back into the soil or does it stay there & evaporate? Also, does the lemon grass keep mosquitoes away?
Because we have planted many tress along the periphery of the pond, most of the water stays and percolates back into the soil.
Yes lemon grass is known to keep mosquitos away.

its a very good video. I want to know after we take it to the overtank and drink this water after filtered by water purifier at home...?
Hello. Can you please provide an video of plant climbers at your house wall
Sure, we will record it. The climber is ivy, or chhipkali bel or creeping fig or ficus repens. Easily available, but slow growing.
What are names of reeds
Sorry, we don't know the name
Tall Reed Grass One? In the Reed Bed? Madam
Sorry whats the question?
@@farmaanandaa What type of Grass plants you are growing on the Reed Bed Madam? Please mention the common name of the plants.
@@SampathKumarKMU they are commonly known as reeds only.
**Correction their Roots release Oxygen which is used by Bacteria and Bacteria does the filtration job not the Plant..
