Why is being a beginner so hard?

- I often talk about the Dunning-Kruger effect, but I rarely talk about the social friction with getting started. Although for me, my social barriers have always felt a lot more impossible to overcome compared to my biological ones.
So here's a rant on exactly that.

Like job descriptions that say "5+ years of experience" but no one will hire you so you can get that experience 😩Beginners are the reason anything has come to fruition. Here's to applauding and encouraging beginners 🥂 Your content is gold, Elizabeth!
Ikr it's a catch-22
Thank you!
It sucks even more when those jobs are advertised as "Entry Level"...
Yeah those jobs..maybe apply anyway and show them you have some kind of experience and transferable skills
I heard a great quote early in my career that stuck with me; "Feel the fear, and do it anyway!".... you just have to embrace the fear and accept it's part of the journey to great things
SO appropriate for this topic
Reminder : don't compare yourself with others, each of us have our own time on our own phase. We will achieve great things too, but first we have to accept that we're unique in our own way and most importantly we should stop comparing ourselves because it just slows down our process and stops us from really fulfilling our own true potential. Let's keep working hard and take a break too! ✨🦋
💯
for some reason I thought this comment was fake since it only had 3 likes lol, turns out it is really you
Another incredibly relatable video at just the right time 🙌❤️ I've just started: as a junior doctor; my new UA-cam channel; learning drums & bass guitar; learning Spanish & Japanese. ALL these things are scary and humbling, because I'm not immediately great or successful at them, and I fear being judged. But e.g. I'm telling people about my new UA-cam channel so that it's just out there. Good to know others feel the same way - being conscious of it means we can combat it and "just do it" (easier said than done!) But at least I've started - and that's the biggest hurdle ✌️😊
Good luck with the channel!
@@elizabethfilips Thank you so much ❤️ Definitely taking tips from you haha!
It's never a bad idea to learn new languages and as a doctor you will be able to communicate with more patients. I wish you the best in your endeavors!
@@aimeea8404 I've already encountered several situations where my other languages have helped, so this is definitely true! Thank you so much 😊
@@DoctorAzmain All the best with your UA-cam channel.

It’s the algorithm for germination that can be the rub: egg shells for tomatoes, water & feed for basil. There are times when getting the different lessons learned in the iteration that make the change. With enough divergent options to then converge on what works.
The judgment from others also comes from them Projecting onto you. They would be scared to start something new and fail, so they project those feelings they have about the topic onto you.
This is awesome!! I’m starting a new job on Monday, and this video couldn’t come up at a better time! Starting something from scratch is massively terrifying! A shoutout to all the beginners! You’ve got this! 🤓
Good luck on Monday!
@@elizabethfilips thank you so much!! 🙏🏼😻😻
I totally agree beginnings should never be frowned upon but uplifted and encouraged. We are never too old to begin anything, if you want to study art at 60 then do it or write that novel at 80 then do it, never let anything stop you! Yep, totally agree with you, and thanks for inspiring me as well! :)
Omg I recently started horse-back riding classes and spent WEEKS feeling dumb for not being perfect at it even though I've never even touched a horse before that lol. I am SO happy that I did start because even though I'm probably not going to stick with it for long (it's hella expensive), I feel so much more ready to keep trying new things and suck at them at first. Brilliant video!
People are 'their own bigger bullies' because of the internalisation of their fear? I'm here for this kind of reflection (thumbs up)
It's hard. I still haven't told my friends I have a YT channel yet. My plan is to wait until I have hit a certain subscriber milestone.
I originally started it to get better at telling stories, (public) speaking, and a genuine interest in cameras and editing. I've now started to really enjoy everything around UA-cam.
I feel like I've been successful at life, but a total beginner at the above. It's an uncomfortable feeling, but growing as a person is great.
I can literally relate to each and every word of yours Elizabeth!
Thanks for being one of those UA-camrs who shares their insecurities so that others get motivated!
Thank you so much for making this video, Elizabeth!
Keep climbing your success ladder everyone❤️
Amen
I really love this video!!!💕 such a helpful reminder. It’s okay to be a beginner. Especially with UA-cam gosh! Love how The Bible says; “Do not despise the small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”. I will be patient and learn💕
Props, I really appreciated the message. Thanks for posting.
This is such a great video! I felt the exact same when I started my website. Still struggling to tell more people about it, but your mention of the "waltzing bear" really helps!
Beginner blues + Impostor syndrome = Disaster haha
Honestly, I sometimes think that we all are beginners throughout our lives in some way or the other. When someone judges us for being a beginner, they fail to notice that they too are beginners in a way since they have much more to experience and learn in life. It stops when we die. So being a beginner is a good thing indeed coz that is life!! You continue to explore uncharted territories.
What do you guys think?
Being a beginner has always been a game changer for me because all my life I've been either bullied or discouraged before I stepped into a new world for learning or exploring something. And the more we're advancing towards the future the more I find people who'd be judgemental anyway despite their any experience let alone expertise regarding that subject. This is actually a serious issue because without beginners the world will have no experts to rely upon someday. Cheers to taking risks & commencements!
Hi Abir,
Absolutely agree with your first sentence. And just to share, I have always followed two principles -
(1) Follow your heart.
(2) Take the risk.
Of course, my assumption is that we are always moving forward with positive intentions.
Great to see you again! 🙂
Thankyou so much for bringing this up liz ✨
Exactly what I needed to hear! This is amazing advice. Thank you, thank you 💕
Well said! Thank you for tackling this issue, it’s so crucial but many don’t realize it 😭
Loved this Elizabeth! I've considered starting a YT channel as well (although no clue about what yet) and you and Ali are an inspiration.
Of course, it takes tons of courage no matter what age you are. I think the criticism is intense on YT and social media. People can be absolutely wicked towards each other and that is sad. But yes, ignore them and move forward to try something new. There's always somebody willing to cheer you on. By the way, your channel is wonderful! :)
This video made so much sense. Sometimes it is scary to even switch courses or careers that are not even a year old. Thank you for making this video.❤
Holy, I didn't even know I needed this. Thank you so much for your profound insights! As for a guy who's falling behind on school, this made me feel a bit better about myself, especially when having to catch up with studies, beginning a new hobby, or learning something that daunted and haunted you for so long. Maybe beginning from scratch is inevitably supposed to be uncomfortable and disorienting, but we must keep on going!
Empowering as always. Thank you, Elizabeth 💚
You are looking so pretty Elizabeth 😍
Thanks for motivation ✨
Every expert was a beginner once!! Being new to UA-cam, it's encouraging to hear this "beginner hurdle" being addressed! 🙌
Love this video Elizabeth. It was so reassuring and exactly what I needed THANKYOU ❤❤
Why I never thought that way before? Incredible topics you bring. Keep on that great work 😍🙏🏼
Thank you so much!
Your content is fantastic, and your views really make you seem like such a fascinating, interesting and kind person!
Completely share the same thoughts with you about starting a UA-cam channel (or generally learning any new skill) - telling no-one about it is probably the hardest thing to do but definitely worth it to getting started. Great video!
I just made a career change, this couldn't have come at a better time. thank you so much!
You already have 96.9k subscribers !!!! That is impressive !! For only “just a beginner” !!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS.
You are so inspirational 🤩 Absolutely loved this as always ❤️
Very insightful, Elizabeth! 💕
I needed this so much! I re-started my YT channel for the 3rd time! But this time I feel much more confident as a beginner.
Thank you for your views on this topic !
Good luck with it!!!
100,000 soon lots of love Eli
Agree! I'm pretty embarrassed being bad at things compared to others. For some reason I'm okay sharing my youtube channel as long as its not to anyone I know in real life ahah
You rock black! You're addictive and once I start watching your video, it flows and I cannot manage to stop until the very end! Love ya!
Thank you for this!
You're the best Elizabeth, Your channel is one of my favorites. You really help people, as a perfectionist that stopped following her goals, this motivated me to continue learning to code. Greetings from Venezuela ❤️ You're channel will continue growing! soon 100k
thank you Sara!! wishing you all the best :)
Exactly, beginning is always difficult.
All the way from Zimbabwe, thanks very much Elizabeth. Your videos are really helping and useful. I hope that everyone who watches them is going to one day implement every lesson that they get from these videos in their daily lives. I'm being positively impacted, thanks once again!
thank youu!
Loved this video, you’re right it takes a lot of bravery - it’s take me a long time to be brave enough to apply to medicine, and I start in 10 days at age 37! Though I have experience as a nurse I am prepared and accepting that I will be terrible at some things to start with, here’s to being a brave beginner! 🥂
good luck Della!
Thank you for this ❤️
This video made me view myself from a different perspective. Also strengthened my self-esteem. Wonderful video!! :)
Thank youu
Thank you for this video!
This is so nice!
This hit me on point. I hate being a beginner in anything and I am my own biggest bully. And yeah, if I had 5k subs to start, I wouldn’t be a such judgmental to myself, and now that you said it like that I feel even more stupid 😂
You are a breath of fresh air on UA-cam, such authenticity is really admirable and a true inspiration.
Thank you Luca, and good luck!
One of the most interesting things I heard on a youtube video! I really needed to hear it. I’m a total beginner in everything that I currently do in my life so this was really touching ❣️
Wishing you the best, maya ❤️
This was really encouraging! Much needed 😊
I cant help but say-"You are breathtakingly beautiful!"
This is now my favorite UA-cam channel
Ooof I needed to see this today. New sub, but I love your thoughts on life! :)
I have just started youtube and I find it so embarrassing to tell anyone about it. Hopefully, I can improve myself and learn to love myself and what I do.
This channel deserves more
You make some good points. Being a beginner is difficult but on the other hand, moving outside my comfort zone is also where I feel alive. I have generally noticed that people who judge beginners are also very reluctant to try new things as a result.
I needed this right now.
great talk! Yes its the fear of getting started that holds us back! But "you can't miss the shots you dont take" so new dreams are worth a shot!
Well explained, petty things done repetitively and consistently and secretly really so explosive and effective, i am actually on your same path, wish you all success , again I am so grateful
Your videos always motivate me 🌻
Love your content 🥰
Great viewpoints as always!
Tysm for this video. Needed to hear this. Your videos are great
This was so so enlightening. 😊
I have only 25 subscribers on my new youtube channel and at the beginning I never thought I would even get 1 subscriber. The feeling is real and intense but it feels so good when we step into unexplored territories in life to discover new skills, knowledge or even feelings.
LOOOOVED IT
Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻
Really interesting Topic !!!
I always say "don't compare your beginning with someone else's middle".
Life changing talk ,thanks
I needed this video. Thank you.
I like that quote about when a dog walks on his hind legs, the important thing is that he does it at all, not how well he does it. I can relate to what you're saying in this video, as I'm a beginner at UA-cam. Like you, I have hardly told anyone. Not because I'm embarrassed about my videos or anything, but I kinda prefer to stay a bit under the radar as I'm learning, experimenting, finding my voice.
It's Always a pleasure to listening to you.
Ah thank you Winvi!
Always support!
Good to rant🙏🔥
Very well said!
Wow,,, your content is fabulous 👌😍😳thanks for this🙏
Thank u so much!!!
Great Practical Experience @Sunshine
The way I related to this ... Thank you 🤍
😫perfect timing!
I love this
It all roughly boils down to embracing vulnerability to stop letting the shame-game take over. I can connect this video with Brene Brown's "Daring greatly" ❤ if you haven't already, give it a read. It's the absolute holy grail for embracing failure in front of the ones who aren't there with you in the arena! Love your contents Liz! ❤
So helpful ! At 31 years old i came Back to school (in occupational therapy) and 1 year later i feel like a complete beginer in My 2nd internship . This is So challenging but this is amazing
Great video Liz! We're all beginners at something at some point.
Great motivational video for beginners.
Growth mentality, always and forever.
I mean I’m in acquisition/retention sales and as a beginner it’s challenging but I’m sure you can do anything you set your mind to, if you apply yourself. Keep it up!
Another amazing video!!
thank youu
Elizabeth with the absolute FIRE CONTENTTTT 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
AH THANK YOU
Ah, such sweet and encouraging thoughts🥰 secretly hoping you'll put out a video of you learning a skill completely from scratch. I'm curious to see your approach (although you've talked about starting UA-cam channels before)❤️ Ad Maiora🥰
@Annamaria Iannuzzo
Ciao amico! 🙂
How are you? Saying hello from Madison, Wisconsin. Just sharing a few lines that have stayed with me almost since forever. (You might have heard them for sure but here they are anyway!) -
"I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life." - Steve Jobs, Stanford University, Commencement address - June 12, 2005.
@@nazeebalam hey man, nice to hear from you again! Yes, this quote is awesome, and I've read/heard it multiple times, as I just love going back to Jobs' speech whenever I (wrongly) feel that failing at something is the most shameful thing on this planet. Thanks for reminding me of this excerpt in particular!🥰❤️
Ad Maiora🤗 btw, I've ordered a copy of The Velocity of Being... Can't wait to read it! Thanks again for your recommendation, I'll tell you what I think of it under Liz's next video😂
I love this
We become what we are. And we are whatever we accept being. Elvis, Walt Disney, Einstien, kept on driving to find an acceptable level - to them. You continue to drive, seek, and try out different paths. The big problem, IMHO, is that far too many just "accept" far too early and become something that they don't even recognize. The bottom line is that, in one way or another, we should always be in a "difficult beginning" state of something in our lives. To not be trying something new is simp[ly wasteful and lacks courage. My god, I sound like some type of "mini Plato"
Inspirational
I will be posting my 'med school move in vlog', 'first day of med school', and many more videos in the next few weeks!! I am very excited
@@Jubair194 thanks mate!
Good luck with the channel!
@@elizabethfilips thank you!!!
So pretty 🤩
