- Today, Devnul joins Jonii so they can discuss the legacy of Segata Sanshiro, the Japanese mascot for the Sega Saturn featured in many commercials that end in violet beatdowns, as well as the cameos and appearances he's made after the fact (like his game Segata Sanshiro Shinken Yugi), and his son, Sega Shiro. As an avid fan of all things Segata Sanshiro, it brings me great joy to witness that his message of intense gaming is not lost in the current day. Always marvelous to see and hear more talk about this certifiable Legend.

Also, it just downed on me, how the Segata Sanshiro's son's classmates are kinda awful to him.
They most certainly know his father is dead. Not because of the dream sequence, but just because it would be natural for rumors to have spread or for this to have popped up at some point.
Then, he wakes up from a dream in the middle of the class screaming "FATHER".
And the whole class laughs at him.
..."HA HA! Look at him, daydreaming of his dead father!"

As Kamen Rider fans, my friends and I have always had a deep love for Segata Sanshiro
The opening Segata Sanshiro trailer replica is actually a better outcome for the person than the usual sort. The kid wasn't judo thrown until he exploded, got a Sega Saturn out of it and got to experience Sonic R. The kid came out pretty well from all this. Segata Sanshiro is brilliant; a real shame that such a wonderful marketing tactic wasn't deployed outside of Japan.
1:57 - Huh, I didn't realise Segata Sanshiro was introduced so late but the timing makes sense. From what I've gathered, the Sega Saturn was going well against the PlayStation in Japan... and then Final Fantasy 7 released.
2:59 - Love the smooth transition to the joke here. Segata "rise from his grave" hearing you weren't playing Sega Saturn.
5:30 - They certainly ended their mascot in style. It becomes an even greater tragedy when you realise Segata's sacrifice was for the DreamCast, one of the greatest consoles that sadly failed.
8:11 - Okay, this line was hysterical. Segata wishes you to play, he doesn't expect you to be good at it is a wonderful sentiment.
11:33 - Sega Saturn is an expensive console to collect for, especially Panzer Dragoon Saga. At least it's a good expensive game from what I hear... too bad almost no one can buy the game to prove that high quality statement.
16:34 - Oh my gosh; that Sega Saturn is adorable! I want that plushie!
19:03 - How is Project X Zone 2 so expensive!? The 3DS wasn't even that long ago. I'm sure I've seen it cheaper in the UK (though perhaps that was first one I saw).
20:02 - Love seeing the sprites dancing around on screen. What a great way to reference the Sakura Wars trailer.
24:38 - Hold on; is this the actual subtitle? I can relate to this moment, with nephew and niece originally thinking any handheld was a Switch. I've seen most the Segata Sanshiro trailers, but aside from the teaser announcement, never saw the sequel trailers here.

I am surprised his inclusion in Death Battle was not at least mentioned. I feel like a lot of people learned about the character through that show, or at least I did.
As someone who really enjoyed the Sega All Star racing games, I kinda wish he had not just been a cameo, but a full on playable character.

Well, this is insane. I just saw in my sub box that you Jonii and fellow UA-camr Devnul (the one who shared the HD Pepsi Man commercials) uploaded videos on the exact same topic, at the exact same minute and after long hiatuses. Such a wonderful coincidence. Will watch both videos to support each channel. Regardless, it's good to have you back.
There is one cameo you missed... but i dont blame you because there's not a lot ofeasy ways to access it.
In the japan only Sega ages release of Dynamite Deka on ps2 there's an unlockable extra mode where the player character is replaced by none other than SEGATA HIMSELF, the gimmick is that you're invincible but need to work against a time limit to get the best score possible!

Thank you for teaching me about Segata Sanshrio today! Now I’m off to frantically scour my local retro game stores for a Sega Saturn for unrelated reasons!
It's pronounced Project Cross Zone. Also, wild to see how expensive those games got. I still remember getting them for $15 on clearance at Target in 2019. Fun times, fun games, although a little tedious.

i was weirdly excited when the project x zone mention came up. i got that game on a whim back before i was more informed on gaming-related info and errata, so i was baffled as to why there was Just Some Dude (TM) going on about the sega saturn.
Hard to consider the fact that the system that brought us Grandia, also gave us this.
I think Segata is like the Roko’s Basilisk. If you know about Sega Saturns and don’t play then you get his wrath but you will be spared if you don’t. Thus classifying the Sega Saturn as an information hazard

Oh boy a Project X Zone mention about lore implications, time to nerd out!
Project X Zone is the sequel duology to Namco X Capcom (Making it a trilogy), so the events of that game are canon to PXZ. It's also like, insane and lore breaking to a ton of games. Street Fighter in NXC is a mix of SF2 and Alpha, and M.Bison dies along with Juli and Juni, who are not meant to die. Then SF4 somehow happens, before M.Bsion is revived in PXZ2 doing... SFA3 story stuff. Tekken keeps on going despite Kazuya staying in Darkstalker's Makai to tame the Devil Gene, and Heihachi uses illegal drugs to get his youth back.
But yeah these all non canon to their home series, right? Except Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier, a Super Robot Wars spinoff where the NXC original characters and the NXC version of Xenosaga's KOS-MOS are guest characters which is acknowledged in PXZ1. And in the end of that game the SRW character Sänger Zonvolt and Haken Browning use a multiverse teleporter thing to go into the events of the next SRW OG game. I don't know if it goes deeper than that since I don't know my Super Robot Wars lore, but this means that canonically a universe filled with giant space mechs is next door to a universe with Klonoa.
Also Vergil from DMC gets time displaced, fights Nelo Angelo, the corrupted version of himself, and doesn't ever go back in time despite other time displaced characters doing so. Also also they put .hack's characters out of their video game and into the real world so they can theoretically see themselves playing the video game if they were to find themselves.
The fish game seems to be based on columns, which makes sense sense, since both are by Sega.
(Puyo Puyo is more a less by Sega too, but let's not get into that.)

It appears to me that Segata Sanshiro in kana is a loose anagram of Sega Satan Shiro which almost is the spelling of “White Sega Saturn” in Japanese, and his giant sega saturn is white. (Segata Sanshirō/せがたさんしろう->Segasa Tanshirō/セガサタンシロー->セガサターンシロ->Sega Sataan Shiro->Sega Saturn White)
I speak Japanese, shiro here refers to the imperative form of "suru" (do) so he's essentially ordering you to play Sega Saturn
