Unbelievable how the world has changed so much
Indeed! So much change and hard to believe it’s been so many years since video rental stores were here.
Ahh the beautiful camera angles of the 90’s kids commercial
You just don’t get the same feel from streaming movies. These were the golden days
I agree!
Ikr?
Thank you for this nostalgia because I miss video rental stores like blockbuster and Hollywood video because I grew up with blockbuster and Hollywood video
Thank you for coming down memory lane and watching :)
@@RetailRewind well I haven't felt the nostalgia I haven't felt for a long time because I hate it when I miss it
I used to have a movie gallery in my hometown. We went there all the time, and got snacks occasionally. It closed down around 2010 and is now a chinese buffet
That’s quite the transformation into a Chinese buffet!
same there! me and my brother always rented "what's new Scobey doo", to this day we still regularly use some of the DVDs dad bought from the closing sale
The only ones I remember are block buster and Hollywood video.
I remember going to rent movies on the weekend or school breaks.
Running to the new releases, the bright lights and the smell of popcorn.
I remember a couple of my small, local shops growing up which of course, they didn't have commercials but definitely remember Blockbuster the most. They were everywhere! Fun memories.
@@RetailRewind
That's true going was exciting and my parents would run into neighbors or friends they haven't seen for awhile and talk catching up on things.
I had two Video Update/Movie Gallery stores I frequented back in the 90's and 2000's. One is now a Sherwin Williams paint store, the other is a Dispensary of all things.
3:43 Eugene before The Walking Dead
I was hoping to see anything but Blockbuster and Hollywood Video.
Thanks for posting. The late fees were where they made their money.
And that is why blockbuster lost money when they abolished late fees.
I remember that Movie Gallery used to have the GREATEST SMELL IN THE WORLD! I could never figure out what that smell was! It seems that in any video store it always got my Bowels moving! All the excitement!
I don't know what it was about the old movie rental stores...whether the plastic on the VHS, the cases that held the movies, or what it was but they all seemed to have that distinct smell but it was a good aurora. I miss walking into those stores.
@@RetailRewind ME TOO! There’s still one in my hometown called Video Renaissance, and they have been there since 1985, not always the friendliest guys working there. They didn’t like it if you didn’t rewind VHS Tapes. I think they have old videos you can rent from the 1930’s, 1940’s etc. It’s an Old Store now.
Surprised to see video rentals still around but glad when they are. So many people have such great memories at movie rental stores...even bad ones such as getting charged extra for not rewinding. I wish they still had a rental store near where I live but there are no more.
OMG. Thought I was the only one. I literally had to take a dump choosing my 3 movies. Forget about how hard it was not knowing which movie to watch first.
Haha! By the time I found a movie to rent, I then realized all 87 copies were already rented. Then it was back to square one...
👍🏻RETRO!
If records can make a comeback, I believe video stores can. Besides there's a lot of people that aren't with the times. Some still use DVD or VHS I believe. Not everyone uses streaming services.
I enjoy hearing the success and nostalgia of the last blockbuster in Oregon. So indeed anything is possible.
I use all three
Indeed. And the only reason I use streaming services is cuz I don't have any other choice. I would use DVD rental stores if they existed. Sadly, all that is left are libraries and Redbox. Lots of movies are only available on DVD/VHS.
3:08 that kid is more 90s than the 90s itself!
I remember Movie Gallery.
I remember there was a video store/ice cream parlor in my childhood hometown, and it was called "Lickety Splits & Video". Very state of the art for very late 80s and early 90s. It was clean, smelled yummy with popcorn and had a sundaes booth for ice cream as well🍿 😋🍦!! It even sold some Disney figurines, 'cause I got Belle from "Beauty & The Beast" there! Me and my sister went almost every weekend- she'd get "Labyrinth"(Jim Henson film w/David Bowie'86) i.e. then we'd watch it with our friend Tasha! It was where I picked out "Silence of The Lambs". Needless to say, my dad was a bit disappointed for the kind of film it was 😠 😱. Btw I wasn't punished 😀, so that's a plus lol! I've seen it several times since then. That film is still demented as EVER 🤪 😜 😱 Thanks for post! Good memories & times!! (Natalie)
Thanks for sharing such a great memory! It’s awesome how old childhood memories can come back to you and instantly you can still smell that popcorn :) such a unique name for a video rental/ice cream parlor but it sounds like it would’ve been fun to go to!
@@RetailRewind Hey 👋! Thanks for noticing my little story lol 😆! It's a great childhood memory indeed. However, I should've waited on seeing "Silence of The Lambs" for I was only 11, js 🤔😳 😱. I've seen it several times over the years and its still a mindscramble and psychotic film being an adult. But other than that, good times at that place. (Natalie)
@@RetailRewind New Subscriber now 😊 😃!!( Natalie)
Silence of the Lambs is classic but yes maybe 11 a bit too young lol. It’s funny how these old places bring back memories like being in middle school, I’d ride my bike to a mom and pop shop, grab a bag of popcorn and sit on the floor and watch the movie that was playing on the small television. Fun memories!
The Blockbuster kid commercial where he is walking out with the stack and that goofy look seems like yesterday that commercial was aired.
I miss the cheesy old video rental commercials!
One time, I went to a Video Update in my hometown of Auburn, WA. I walked out of the store, slipped and fell (it was a bit rainy that day) and a car ran over my foot.
Sorry to hear that experience! I hope your foot is back to normal after that. Whereabouts in Auburn was that store? I live near Auburn but probably hadn't moved up here yet when the store was open.
@@RetailRewind It was on the north side of town. The site's a Walgreens now. And the car was going, maybe, 5.
Thanks for letting me know :)
@@RetailRewind You're welcome.
Hollywood Videos holds a special place in my heart. so sad not many people remember it like they did Blockbuster. Hollywood had better deals and me and my father used them through the whole of the 2000s into the early 2010s before they went out of business. We used Blockbuster during the late 90s
I still remember that smell of Cotton Candy going into Hollywood Videos. sitting down in the kids section watching Disney Movies on a little Mickey Mouse CRT TV that was there to play movies over and over again all day while my father browsed for an hour or so.
Yes, I and friends rented there more than Blockbuster. They did have better deals too! Loved me some Hollywood Video back in the day! (Natalie)
For those of us who experienced video rental stores in the 80’s and early 90’s, it’s quite the opposite. Nothing was better than local mom and pop owned video stores, they had the best inventory by far, even if it was fewer numbers, they had titles you couldn’t find at big corporate stores. They had all the obscurities, huge decorated horror sections, adult sections, was far more cozy and they all had their own unique interiors with promotional stuff hanging everywhere. Blockbuster and Hollywood were so stale in comparison, they were where you go for new releases I guess, because they had 100 copies of each one. But I think most people look back on them as killing the golden age of mom and pop video stores. VHS was in its prime back then.
When Gen X is gone, who will be nostalgic for video stores? Future people will look at these ads like we look at Victorian ads for Doctor Jake Dawson's Snake Oil.
In the south we had Pick a Flick and Real Mooovies 😅
I remember Moooovies! I can’t remember if I was living in Georgia or Florida at the time. Fun times.
The missing memories of blockbuster video. I wish they sold international movie films and purchase
Video Update was WAY better than Blockbuster. Fight me but don't actually.
Unfortunately i can’t say I’ve ever been to a Video Update but i did prefer the mom and pop rental stores to Blockbuster. Less options but there was something about them and the fresh popcorn.
Does anybody besides me remember a video store called "bilbo baggins video"? It was around in the 80's when I was a kid.
Can’t recall that one. There were so many different movie rental stores and smaller family owned ones but sad not many left.
Making in 90s Kids Commercial
goooooood times
All I remember of these is Blockbuster, though I may not remember some of these ads, as I wasn't born until 1997. I never knew "Video Update" existed, but then again, I never lived in Minnesota. Does anyone know if it existed elsewhere?
I never was able to go to a Video Update either, just Blockbuster, Hollywood video and the mom and pop shops.
@@RetailRewind I lived in Eden Prairie, MN (outer suburb of Minneapolis) during the 1990s and 2000s that had a Video Update. It had a much more extensive collection than Blockbuster, which would have 15 copies of the latest hits. Video Update had more older and classics and obscure cult movies than the Blockbusters I ever visited. They had a large selection of Laserdiscs for sale in the early 1990s when they were still semi-viable for HQ video. Sad they just went pffft. Streaming is just too fragmented an experience. pay for this, that, and the other service, and now that's just paying for access to rent or buy on top of the subscription.
Is if me or did major videos Come see the difference at major video sounded similar?
Good question! I re-watched it and he didn’t speak a whole lot so it’s hard to tell but maybe he just had that good spokesperson voice? Anyone have any idea who he was?
@Retail Rewind no he was talking about the fact that the jingle sounds identical to the Blockbuster jingle.
If I buy a vhs at a flea market am I responsible for someone else's late fees 🙃asking for a friend
Haha, only one way to find out ;)
I hated blockbuster for killing mom and pop video stores.
Hi blockbuster store next year Queensland brisbane Victoria point gym hollywood film studios making TV'S. Need business business
