Cycle Touring Netherlands on Bromptons

  • A little cycle tour through the Netherlands on our Brompton's with a reggae/dub soundtrack, I mean what more could anyone need but to watch two Brompton's in the sun with this tune!
    This is the first time we have taken the Brompton's abroad since getting them a couple of months ago. Now given their ease of folding into such a small size a flight would have been possible but very unnecessary give the distance between the East of England and Holland. So we took the ferry as usual.
    You might see in the video we only had a tarp (no tent) this time to keep it minimal. Plus we only went for four days. As you'll see from our other videos we are regulars at this route and I can confirm that, with the Brompton's, it has been the most fun anyone can legally have with a bicycle in the outdoors. I've put a few links below to some of the kit you might see in the video of interest. Personally, I found the bike packing so much easier on the Brompton compared to my Trek or road bike. Mainly due to these excellent two bags:
    Floral front bag for handlebars (note, other less flowery version available):
    www.amazon.co....
    Brompton front messenger bag (a must, storage is great and totally waterproof):
    www.brompton.c...
    And of course, the music which makes it all look so cool:

    Nice. Unexpected but also genius idea to have the reggae soundtrack and let it run for almost the entire video! Love it.

      Bravo! We have also cycle toured from Hoek to Berlin but that was on mountain bikes before we discovered the pure joy machines that are Brompton bicycles. Happy travels. Thanks.

      @tonyfrewin4822 we've done a few tours now on various bicycles; road and mountain. But, by far the best has been the Brompton. Only people that own them know just what a superb bicycle they are, was an absolute pleasure to ride for four days. Where do you plan on taking yours?

      @@Cycle_Zen well I like cycling in France but I am loving the videos of the Netherlands. I have only travelled through the Netherlands once on a coach trip to the Rhine in the 80s and that’s got to be high on the agenda. My first big tour is going to be JOGLE this September (on a Giant Toughroad) and if that goes to plan, who knows. Wife’s Brompton is arriving on Monday and mine was a couple of weeks ago.

    • @Cycle_Zen
      @Cycle_Zen  Рік тому +1

      Wow, JOGLE will be incredible, good luck 👍👏. We did Hook of Holland to Berlin and back last summer over 29 days. Distance I think is comparable to JOGLE but the terrain much more forgiving! That's why we love NL and Germany, the sheer ease with which you can cover distance. If you and your wife both have Brompton's, it has got to be the place to tour them, camping and bicycle facilities just so superb too.

      @@Cycle_Zen yes, it looks great on the cycling routes in Europe, especially Netherlands and Germany. I have watched a few of Rob Hunters trips for inspiration. The JOGLE will be nothing like anything I have done before so fingers crossed, I will do it. I will let you know 👍

    You've been doing cycle touring with big-wheel bikes in your earlier videos. Why did you choose Bromptons now? In some footages you had all your gear with you, in others not. Where did you leave camping gear when not carrying it with you.
    Regards: Pekka, Cycling Finn

    • @Cycle_Zen
      @Cycle_Zen  Рік тому +2

      Hi Pekka, thanks for your comment and nice channel, we enjoyed your ‘Why Brompton” video. We chose Bromptons for several reasons. As you know from a cycle tourers perspective they really give you ultimate freedom to be able to take them on a train, bus or car with incredible ease. Also we like that we can always have them by our side when staying in hostels or hotels and not worry about security. But the main reason we changed to Bromptons is that they are a joy to ride and put a smile on your face like no other bike does. To answer your other question, when we tour we sometimes like to stay a day or two at a location and leave our gear at the campsite or hotel and explore the area with a light weight set up so we can enjoy lighter and speedier cycling. We still appreciate big wheel bikes or any form of bicycle and hope to inspire people to get on their bike and enjoy the health and environmental benefits of cycling. We wish you happy adventures in the future with your Brompton and who knows maybe one day we will see you out there on the road. What is Finland like as a country for cycle touring? Best regards Sean, Cycle Zen

    • @finn111
      @finn111 Рік тому +3

      @@Cycle_Zen Hi Sean, thanks for your detailed answer. Regarding Finland for cycle touring, I sure recommend Finland. Cyclists are respected on roads and streets and in many cities and towns there are bike paths or separated bike lanes for safe cycling. My home town Oulu (200 000 inhabitants) is ranked high: we have 930km bike paths. And now when we are in NATO, you can consider Finland as safe place 😁.
      For first timers cycling in Southern coast (Helsinki - Porvoo -Loviisa - Kotka), or Turku in South-West might be good to start for Bromptoners: distances between towns and villages are reasonably short and you can find accommodation. June - August is the best season. I recommend Retkeily GT Outdoor Map for planning, it has recommended bike tours marked on blue color. Unfortunately I did not find English pages, but here you can see what I mean: www.adlibris.com/fi/kirja/etelsuomi-finland-southern-retkeily-gt-9789522665379?gclid=CjwKCAjw2K6lBhBXEiwA5RjtCaaC8WOqWNWHqbE8ZhWh1Cjzi8e8GBcR0gbWVKyg-vmvSmO2RZRFEhoCch8QAvD_BwE
      One thing to bear in mind: be prepared for bugs and mosquitos if you plan to sleep outside. Long sleeve clothes and mosquito net (or tent) for sleeping is a good idea. We have clean nature and peaceful country roads and much less people than in UK. In summer it doesn't get dark at night, so you can enjoy long days.
      Thera are also nice route recommendations here www.bikeland.fi/en/retkipyoraily
      I hope this helps, for start.
      Pekka

    20inch is bulky inside the train? Or malls, hotels etc?
    52t chainring on 16 is enough speed compares to MTB?
    Could you pls give some thoughts on it so that i can decide on the near future thanks

    • @Cycle_Zen
      @Cycle_Zen  11 місяців тому +1

      The wheel size of the standard Brompton and the C Line Explore model 2023 that we own is 16 inch. I can gladly say I have not found it to be bulky or difficult when taking it on trains, in cars, on planes, in hotels or around supermarkets. I believe they are designed specifically for this very purpose and as a result are incredibly versatile in terms of transporting with ease. Also the 52t chainring on the 16 gear supplies plenty of speed and the smaller wheels compared to standard MTB with 26-29 inch wheels makes for responsive acceleration and nimble handling. Perfect for urban areas. I would definitely recommending getting to your nearest Brompton Junction and taking one on a free test ride if you are able to. Thanks for the comment 👍
