Thanks, Ryan I will dive into Robert’s books…on Audible. I am 71, and was diagnosed a few years ago with Parkinson’s disease. It has robbed me of my ability to read printed material, or follow text on screen, but my ears soak it up. I recently listened to your “Lives of the Stoics” and enjoyed it immensely. I abhor self-pity or excuse-making. I was always attracted to Stoicism since I first encountered it 50+ years ago, but now it seems that Stoicism has found me, and I am grateful. I admire your generation for reviving and energizing Stoic thought and ideals, it inspires me. In addition to my own infirmities, I am my elderly, frail wife’s caregiver, and Stoicism gives me the means to get through the day with calm and peace in my soul. Bad breaks? Why me? Nah. Take it as it comes, play it as it lays, and live to the fullest extent possible.
I want to reflect on the importance of having mentors in life, I love that quote that says: "if you are sitting in a room where you are the smartest person, then you are in the wrong room". And I think that complements perfectly with what Epictetus said: "if you want to improve, be content to be thought stupid or foolish". Ryan surely had improved over time in his knowledge and understanding of the stoic philosophy, and I think Robert Greene has been a great influence in his work, it inspires me to look at everyone around me thinking that each person can teach something new to me. It surely is a humbling way to see things and keeps your ego in check.
I'm finishing The Laws of Humans Nature, one of the best books I've read in my life. It's my fourth book by him. Thanks to give me the honour to read your books Mr. Greene.
Use great ideas to build yourself into a man of strength and character, a man of your word, skilful and with a purpose that serves the ones around you as well. If you enjoy ideas about masculinity and mastery, I invite you to explore the videos I share on the Mastery Order Channel. Challenge yourself with some concepts about manhood, explore your masculine potential to the maximum and become the kind of man you would admire. We can only better ourselves together, as men among men, so I invite you to use what I share and, of course, share your own opinions so that others can benefit from them as well. Looking forward to your points of view. All the best to you!
Early afternoon on Valentine's day started feeling depression brewing.. 2 minutes into the video I was cured and smiling.. I'm a long time fan of Robert Greene and now added another great channel to my collection. Thnx Ryan.
Meditation is important. Our thoughts can actually paralyze us. Meditating throughout the day allows me to continue moving forward, without judgment, doing those things that contribute to my life and to the lives of those around me and sometimes for people who are far from me.
Great meditation to start the day=] Loving life- that is why "Amor Fati" and "Memento Mori" are such powerful mantras- they help you realize that tomorrow never comes.
Robert Greene has helped me immensely on my journey in becoming the best psychologist I can be. I'm able to easily detect when manipulation is taking place in any setting, thanks to Robert's incredible wisdom and insight, both from his books and from his seminars/discussions on podcasts. Thank you Ryan for giving us so much Robert Greene content, it really means a lot for wisdom-lovers like me. Keep up the amazing work both of you
1) ...all things...for good... 2) ...think on what's good... 3) ...sincere, authenticity is good... 4) ...be free of the fear of death... 5) ...be aware, on guard, alert... 6) ...test the "fruit" (actions)...
I have a fear of losing out on something genuine by becoming an observer, to experience something first hand, completely unprepared and taking it head on and seeing where it takes me and feel the things I'm supposed to be feeling. I guess I'm more afraid of not feeling anything at all. I feel as though we take our feelings for granted and that to me is scary to lose since it's, in my mind the only genuine reality i can identify.
Feelings are everything BUT the reality. They obstruct us from seeing things as they really are. Not feeling, and not acting by your feelings, are not the same thing.
I studies part of the stoic philosophy 6 years ago. It is a very effective science and I recommend it to be studied especially by young people in this modern world.
One of the best decisions I've done was to start walking on the stoic path, and part of that, because of this channel and Ryan's ability and discipline to communicate it. My sincere thanks! One question to Ryan. Would you feel comfortable bringing your family to a video? In a sense of understanding how the stoic philosophy influences the relationship between the family, how is the daily routine, etc.
5:28 These thoughts about death are so moving! What a way to look at it and great interpretation of how awareness of death has created a lot more problems. Wow. Love it Mr. Green. Thanks Ryan for more great content to inspire!
How can we anticipate EVERYTHING? I'm smart enough to anticipate everything going wrong that I know of, but I'm not smart enough to be able to anticipate what I don't know? I do practice negative thinking as much as I can, and it has stood me in good stead on installs, I've had more than one client say "you think of everything" but I know there is the possibility of something I haven't even thought of going wrong . . .
An example of "We suffer more in imagination than in reality," would be the fear of the pain we might feel at the dentist as opposed to what we actually feel. React to what you feel, not what you fear.
I have to say I agree with these points except for anticipating everything. My understanding of this statement is that you won't be in the present moment ever and you simply cannot anticipate everything. This could drive someone to paranoia. A question of depth and detail needs to be explained in this case, as otherwise I don't see how this is Stoic; especially considering the fact that Stoics say they cannot control everything.
Robert Greene is the man! I am wondering why one clip he has a leg brace and the other a black eye? Wait...maybe he really is a superhero...philosopher by day and taking names by night. My man.
I think that awareness of death is another one of those things that creates a division of two kinds of people in the world. With some people, it awakens an imperative to do, it galvanizes them into action. In other people, like me, it offers absolutely no signal or clarification whatsoever as to what one is to do with one's remaining time, it merely throws into high relief what an unsatisfactory person one is.
Hi Ryan. Just a humble suggestion. You should open up a join and earn loyalty badges option for your videos on UA-cam. Your videos have really helped me out and I would like to contribute.
Sufism (Fountains of Noor) “Part of the perfection of existence is the existence of imperfection within it, were there no imperfection, the perfection of existence would be imperfect.” -al-Shaykh al-Akbar Ibn ‘Arabi
There is a stillness to stoicism, a peace of mind, and I see it in Robert Greene. An equanimity. The guy talking to him seems to be overdosing on caffeine, though.
Pain is the price we pay for being alive. Dead cells-our hair, our fingernails-can’t feel pain; they cannot feel anything. When we understand that, our question will change from, “Why do we have to feel pain?” to “What do we do with our pain so that it becomes meaningful and not just pointless empty suffering?
I really enjoyed this. I learn from people who know more and are wiser than me. I welcome death when it comes because I believe in an afterlife. I don't know what this, afterlife, will look like on this side nor does anyone else I expect. It is largely a matter of faith. I don't make up this idea of an afterlife because I am afraid of death.
Life isn't about getting somewhere or achieving some state of being, it isn't about being happy or content. It is about realizing that no matter what you do, as long as you think there is somewhere to be or something to get, you'll be running in circles. Until at last you see that all one has to do is be.
I think Greene’s work is two sides of the same coin, not outshining the master can be seen as having respect for elders and for authority, understanding ego and being respectful about them. He uses that sort of language to give you a sense of combat, to make it seem more in your face and make you more aware of what you need to do and why
i have been trapped in that cage of over thinking everything to the point of not living. Strangely enough as i had to put down my cat a few days ago i snapped out of it. seeing my cat going from alive and moving, looking at me, to laying there dead, nothing there just perfectly still.. it made me realize something. and now my outlook on life is a bit better.
I sometimes struggle to find the stoic principles reflected or even contradict them in Robert Green’s work. Such as in the 48 laws he mentions deliberately deceiving people to gain power. Seeking power in itself seems to be a not very stoic ideal. Could someone ellaborate their thoughts on this?
When Seneca was discussed, it made sense to me, we can anticipate and acknowledge that we cannot control what will happen, but more so, accept it as fact, it is life. I was then confused when Alfred Hitchcocks ability to control everything he anticipated was discussed as it seemed to conflict with the opinion of Senecas statement. Could someone please explain the key difference between the two points that Robert made as I cant seem to understand how both views on anticipation can be seen together.
Hi Ryan! I’ve been so excited to become a new subscriber to your channel. You’re doing such a wonderful job helping so many of us on our journey to understanding Stoicism, but I just wanted to share a thought..You’re content deserves better audio quality! It’s really difficult to enjoy your message while wearing headphones bc your voice peaks and distorts, that includes background noise as well. Also, your video audio levels don’t match the UA-cam ads so it’s always a rude surprise whenever those kick in randomly. I realize this constructive criticism probably doesn’t bother the majority of people but it truly does make a difference in the experience. I recommend using a lavalier microphone on yourself and checking gain levels. Either way, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and feel free to reach out incase I can help you with some audio insight. Much love my friend👍
You assume it is not okay or normal to not love life. There are many things we do not love or love. Realize that we did not ask to be born. So if one does not love life then it is what it is. It is not bad. It is life!
I love Ryan Holiday & I love Robert Greene! This was perfect today. 🙏 I was deciding what to watch & it was easy to pick this over the news cycle…..something I’m trying to get a better balance with. This felt good to my soul. Thank you both!
Very impressive compilation. I esp loved Greene's explanation on we suffer more in our imagination. I thank you, Ryan, for all the effort you put forth to promote Stoicism. Greetings from Istanbul.

You're the man, Joe 😎
Beautifully said. The perspective you've chosen is truly inspiring
"You are gonna have failure in life, people are gonna hurt you, but that is life, that's what it is".
That line stayed with me forever.
1. Amor fati
2. We suffer from imagination
3. Make own ideas

5. Anticipate everything

Praise Allah. Who's got under 10 min to watch this? Thanks.

I actually discovered Robert through Ryan, so incredibly blessed to have both of their lessons within my life.
Amen 🙏
Same 🏆
In my case, my dad introduced me to Robert Greene almost 15 years back and then to Ryan 5 years back.
Keep pushing, keep growing, little daily growth is all we need to focus on
One day I wish to meet you both. You two are the people that I respect the most. Thank you for sharing your timeless wisdom.

Fear of death is our greatest fear. It does control our lives. I have lost half my family to death and I give them credit for facing it with dignity.

Robert Green is a blessing to me❤❤❤❤❤
i want to see Robert Green into the gym,
to improve his health,to take care of himself.Great Man
As someone with anxiety I can literally feel how anxious Ryan Holiday was during the segment about death.
I noticed it too, the movement and looking away. Great eye.
Appreciate both of these guys. They have helped me so much with a better outlook on life and how to deal with people and circumstances.

I just finished Discipline is Destiny, thank you for that work. I look forward to the next two in the series.
Always great to listen and read what Robert Greene is putting out there.
Overthinking is a sure way to hell. Words are what effect emotions. When in fact words are just sounds.
Big fan here, Ryan

Man Robert Greene is a true legend it seems like he should’ve went into law enforcement 😅🏆
Interesting at the end, how he brought up Howard Hughs, one of the wealthiest men of his time, history repeats itself, or at least there are echoes.
Robert Greene is the man! I am wondering why one clip he has a leg brace and the other a black eye? Wait...maybe he really is a superhero...philosopher by day and taking names by night. My man.
