Classical Pianist Reviews CATEEN'S WINTER WIND (Hayato Sumino)

- A classical pianist reviews an insane performance from a far superior classical pianist.
Chopin's Winter Wind Etude (Op. 25 No. 11) is probably one of his most famous etudes because of its insane technicality but also because of its beautiful, chilling melody.
But technicality aside, what goes into the musicality of a performance like this? How do dynamics and phrasing in both hands contribute to the overall listening and even performing experiences of both listener and player?
Cateen's (Hayato Sumino) performance is undoubtedly incredible, and I break down aspects of this recording that are both unique and universal to him and other performances!
Be sure to watch the original before (or after) this video because I stop a lot to explain things!

I just realized I said i and iv chords at 5:57 when I meant i and VI whoops. Pls don't flame me I got it mixed with the relative major 😅
iv and VI are basically the same anyway
@@purewaterruler what did I just see
Cateen: Plays the first note.
Watt: "Oh, interesting!"
literally haha
True lol😂🙏
He's one of the favorites of the next chopin competition for a reason!
Wow. His posture, accuracy, and touch are just fantastic. Bringing out that chromatic scale in the right hand with barely noticeable rotation is impressive, to say the least. I always end up rotating a crap ton for the momentum, but holy crap does that consistency sound great. And his body movement the whole way is just out of this world, really draws you in. Great review, definitely some interesting takeaways here to keep in mind.
Cateen’s performance is an absolute masterpiece shsksbskdn I literally listen to it all the time
Whenever I attempt to play that piece for fun I can never control the tempo well ahhh I admire his skills ;-;
Also I loved how you analysed his playing it helps me realise what’s actually good in a performance and I also notice a lot more things I do unconsciously when I practice, so thank you very much!!
P.S. I have the same Cat lamp in the background it’s so cute XD
what’s the lamp called?
I envy him for his insane improvisational ability. Dude is insane.
Coming back to this after his first stage performance, I didn't think he could improve any more. Turns out he just did; what an amazing pianist.
Really loved that thorough analysis! The amount of detail that goes in a single performance can often not be fully appreciated by the casual listener unless pointed to.
Awesome content!! Keep doing your work bro, the musician and aspiring musician community are grateful for this.
Greetings from Brazil!
Emi played this in Your Lie in April for those who have it on the tip of their tongue.
Yeah!!
oh yeah i forgot about that anime
yeahh
I'm pretty sure he said something on his instagram story that he's seen Your Lie in April haha. Hope he plays all of the Chopin pieces in the anime.
I prefer the version in the anime than this tbh. It's too fast and I "felt" that one more than this.
That thumbnail XD Great review as always! Cateen is such an amazing pianist!
Just found your channel through this video. I really love this sort of content. Ready to binge!
Stumbled across this channel today through this video. Subbed immediately. I like hearing musicians’ takes on other performances.
Hope he wins the 2021 Chopin competition! He is my bet👋👋👋
I'm currently learning this.
I didn't even know my favourite pianist Cateen had a video of it. This is awesome, also helps me with deciding how to play it.
Seeing you analyse classical was actually more refreshing than I anticipated!
Hey great review, Cateens performance really is incredible. I'm finding i can tie the left hand "glue" to my own playing a bit :)
His performance was stellar!
Ambergris
Please review more videos from this guy, enjoyed it a lot :)
Youre so sympathetic! Also really enjoy ur content💕
whoaaa is this new lighting? looks really good, and great analysis as always :)
New camera, and thanks
That thumbnail xD
Great review man!
this video never ceases to be both informative and validating because watt, a trained classical pianist, is fanboying over cateen
relatable, even if i don’t play 😂
love your work man!!
best thumbnail yet imo
awesome analysis! im always a big fan of anime piano, but I love classical just as much. it would be great to see more analysis (maybe even playing the pieces) of classical music in the future. I think it would be really cool if you analyzed a jazz piece from a classical perspective
Love this video man. Gotta state it again: Cateen is just a different breed lmao
The thumbnail is so good, I died laughing when I saw it lmaoo
Totally review his Hungarian rhapsody !!
finally! this is great!
When I first listened to winter wind, those were the emotions that I felt. I believe that he really tried to emphasize on the feeling, and you can see it on his face. Cold like winter, yet strong as a storm. Do more Cateen in the future please.
sheeeesh i love cateen thx for the vid man
You gotta react to his Twinkle twinkle little star!
Cateen's video inspired me to try the learn the piece...I havent taken formal piano lessons in almost 7 years 🙃
It's been fun to try tho lol
bro you gotta review his own cadenza of hungarian rhapsody 2
Exactly!!
Nice review Watt! May I request to review the Kuusou Mesorogiwi of Animenz?
great video
hey this is that one piece sophie oui oui played on that twoset episode i remember lmao
yo great vid fr. could u do a review on zimerman's ballade 1 in g minor? it would be very interesting to hear from ur pov
You are doing great with your channel, I can see there is a sound project behind it. The only thing that I didn't like was the trying to monetize the audience from the very start with merch etc, but contents are good so far so keep it up!
Regarding Cateen's performance, I think there are many better ones on youtube lol personal favourite is Sokolov's
Could you do a review on Schumanns Op 15 played by Horowitz? I know the piece in comparison is more simplistic.
could you analyze his piano sonata #0?
1:35 💀💀
“interesting”
Cateen is an actual god lmao
no wayy u did ittt
The first thing I noticed (and loved) about Cateen's playing was the lightness of his touch and his ability to convey emotion. Thank you for this interesting analysis :) PS. A brief look at the material you analyse seems to reveal a lot of anime music. I am wondering if you would consider something like Zorsy's piano arrangement of Those Who Fight ua-cam.com/video/wIDbJ3bo1jU/v-deo.html (I am a huge fan of The Consouls who do VGM jazz and Zorsy arranges a lot of the music and plays keys for The Consouls) I listen to a lot of jazz but Cateen has revived my classical listening with his entry in the Chopin Comp!
Nice video! Btw, have you listened to his sonata?
Yes I have!
Please, please, PLEASE react to Cateen's Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (with Cateen cadenza)!
now this is the type of wind that throw's you off of a clif
Hey your intro sounds like Joey's when he does the monthly otaku collection videos lol
"Let it ring."
when he said "tigidigatigidiga" i felt that
On top of all that he can't see the piano. Now I have hair like Cateen and trust me... you can't see much when you play the piano :))
Lmao the thumbnail XD
It would be nice if you could increase the volume of the piano playing -- I had to turn the volume up and down to hear it.
Listen to the guy directly from his own channel:
ua-cam.com/video/pHlqEvAwdVc/v-deo.html
oh boi xD winder wind was always one of my fav classic pieces
also a idea popped rn in my mind for a vid idea for you, you could do a vid where you talk about dynamics, phrasing and rubato and stuff like this, would be very interesting what you think about it from your experience.
great vid review! love your vids :P
I definitely could! I just need to sketch out the progression I want to teach everything in haha
Im here for the algorithm
did you mean to say i and VI chords? not gonna flame you but overall loved this vid
8:10 i like your funny words
Wow, it really feels like the piano is possessing him
Watt: puts finger near the keyboard
Me: n-no! DONT DO ITTTT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
W Thumbnail 😂

Can you play winterwind?
Aw, what happened to the Animenz fanboy? XD
Lol don't worry he'll be back soon
"Show-pun" = Chopin, if u were wondering
Hi
2:50 sad #kekw
12:20 he's playing that left hand with flat fingers because it's the only possible way you can play that left hand. You have to hold lower E during those 2 bars while playing 9ths and a 10th intervals.
I don't know if I misunderstood what you said or you're just speaking nonsense. Why would you do that?
Is that Hayato Sumino?
Am only a cat liker here, not a lover.
But he is not Ca-teen, but rather Cat-teen. He indeed is a cat lover.
*DYNAMICS*
still waiting for the part 2 of mistakes beginners make....
It's coming along haha
