I just purchased a super cheap 2003 BMW 330ci from a friend that didn't want to bother listing his car for sale. I was planning to take it for a drive today but, well, watch the video and you'll find out!

My sister just spent over $900 getting repairs done on her 2006 Accord with about the same number of miles. Cars break. I guarantee it's no where near as enjoyable to drive as an E46.

That's a good statement. And yeah bmws are reliable depending on how you take care of it. Most of these cars have a known issue. For instance my s54 is known for it's vanos and rod bearings. Though if I leave it and keep running it, I can literally tear up my head. Then you'll find an 80 dollar broken timing chain guide ends up costing you 3000 dollars for another motor. Other than that I've probably dumped over 5k into my m3 most of it being either suspension, maintenance, or restoration.

I work on my E46 328i and E46 M3 myself because they’re very easy to work on. Owning these cars are very cheap to own because almost everything that can possibly go wrong on them are easily fixable. I don’t think I can ever part with these cars because they’re fun to drive and I can fix them myself.

It didn't fly to his drive did it. BMW starters are pretty binary in operation (they work or don't like most electronic items). I've been trailered twice because one that worked fine to get me somewhere didn't work when I got back in the car. 125k on average so 99k does seem a bit low for one. YMMV I guess....literally.

I bought a 2002 325i for 1600 dollars as my first car. Car had 215000 miles and I’ve since put 8500 miles on it in 6 months, and not had any issues mechanically. I’ve put around 250 dollars into it since (that includes 2 oil changes and a new set of plugs as well as a new air filter). Main issues with it when purchased were warped rotors, bad LCA bushings, and 2 bad window regulators, all of which have been fixed for very cheap. All In all I’m super happy with my purchase. I think I owe the reliability of the car to the previous owner. I found a service record in the glovebox from 9 months before I bought the car for 1800 dollars purely in preventative work, and the car was obviously cared for and well maintained which is reflected I’m not only it’s condition, but how it drives. I can honestly say that I love this car. I had no intention of buying a BMW, but when this popped up and fit my criteria (cheap and manual transmission) I just couldn’t refuse. I’m so glad I didn’t. I now plan on saving and hopefully buying another E46, but this time a 330i/Ci.

Working on BMW is actually incredibly easy. They are put together so well that they actually come apart very well. They're just Layered. you have to take a lot of crap apart to get what you were going to work on.
And having small hands sometimes helps. But there are tutorials almost everywhere on UA-cam. And there are many blogs that you can print out the tutorials with full-color photographs.
I have a 2005 M3 and redid my entire cooling system and police and tensioners using a 35-page print out. It was a snap.
Your 330i E46 is almost identical to my E46 M3 in many respects. They share a lot of common parts too. So I know that they are really easy to work on.
Anything after 2006, you need a lot of diagnostic crap because it's so computerized. E46 was the last Model a shade tree mechanic and really fix easily.

New Struts and strut tower bearings, $250. (Monroe sensi trac and SKJ strut mounts). 10 piece front suspension kit, $170. (control arms, control arm bracket/bushing, etc), lifetime alignment $ $150. (asked for the $25 off coupon). Cost of car, $800. (craigslist,145K miles). oil change and tranny oil change I don't count as that's maintenance instead of repair. Moral of the story, if you shop around and have the time and know how you too can tool around in BMW for a little over $1,800.

Old BMWs are known to be reliable. My father had his 1996 BMW E36 318is valuable at 3.000€, the car had 130.000km and the only problem it gave in 20+ years of ownership was the battery that died once. It all depends on the owner and how they treat them, and still, these cars can take a beating. Especially big engined like the 330

I hate the "cheap BMWs are expensive, period, the end, no changing my mind" mentality. I bought an '02 330ci and it's amazing, because I didn't go into it expecting it to have no issues, nor did I go into it with the mindset that it would be outrageously expensive to fix. I've had my car for 2 months now and the only issues I've had are wheel speed sensors, and consumables. The vacuum lines are known to go bad over time, especially with the "m" series engines, as well as starters, you should've expected that going in to it. As much as I'd hate to be that guy, but seriously, do some work on your car yourself, I get the starter, but the vacuum lines are relatively easy and accessible.

    • @HelloRoad
      @HelloRoad  4 роки тому

For sure, working on BMWs yourself can save a ton of money. Just didn't have any interest doing the starter, not a fun job. But absolutely, would've been much cheaper had I done it myself.

Don't hesitate to go after market for most of your parts. You'll find that many of the German aftermarket are not aftermarket at all. It's the exact same part without a BMW box.
Or things like gas struts for the hood and trunk are by The dirt cheapest Amazon Chinese made stuff. It's fine. It's just fine. Just use your head when you're buying parts made in Asia. For engine components stick to German or USA
    made.
But I've bought Asian made side view mirrors variation made running lights on the corners they were already Depo.
I got a set of the most beautiful gloss black kidney grills that were made in Asia that were far better than the German made crappy ones that game with the car.
My HID fog lights are from Asia and they are just dandy 6000k bright and beautiful.
I buy almost everything I need from Amazon or Ebay. And the rest on some of the larger dedicated BMW Supply sites.
All my pulley tensioners Etc exact same part made by a company called Ina that supplies the parts to BMW. So I just bought these Ina parts without BMW box for pennies on the dollar.
German made ..exact same part. I bought them on eBay for almost nothing brand new.
My thermostat was American made, I bought on Amazon brand new for $25 instead of the $90 BMW version. My thermostat is every bit as good as German one if not better.
Gaskets O-rings nuts and bolts all on Amazon just get the part numbers off of a website called Real oem.com.
Do a search using the part numbers for every single things that you need for your car. I would just do searches using part numbers that you obtained from realoem.com and find the cheapest source start the internet. It will likely be Amazon or Ebay

Black headliner, gloss black trim around windows, gloss black triangular plate that attaches wing mirror to a door. There are a LOT more items that make it "ZHP" (M-sport in Europe), but the ones I mentioned are the ones people usually don't bother to change on non-ZHP. If you have gloss black trim around windows for example, and it's OEM part (i.e. not a wrap), you can be 90+ % sure it's a ZHP.
