In this video, I’m going to teach all cool chord voicings we can find on the album ‘’The Raven That Refused To Sing’’ by Steven Wilson, one of my favorite albums ever!
You need a 12-string acoustic guitar, or a high-strung, Nashville tuning style acoustic guitar for a few songs (or else, they won’t make sense on standard tuning!).
This album truly has magnificent chords, and is using chords from the parallel Major a lot (as Steven Wilson always do!). I will explain everything in the video.

This is the Ambient Guitar youtube channel of Canadian multi-instrumentist Antoine Michaud. Through original ambient music, chordal guitar lessons and tips on guitar pedals, Antoine is looking to educate and inspire aspiring ambient musicians to learn everything about the world of ambient guitar and chordal voicings on guitar.
Thanks for delving into this - IMHO probably the best album of the last decade.
love the sound of the descending Maj7-Min7 progression. simple but beautiful
Nice chord structures there. You have a good voice too. You could also try ambient vocals with the guitar sometime.
I got into Porcupine Tree about 10 years ago after I heard the epic 'Anaesthatise'. I saw Steven Wilson live 4 years ago. He really is a genius! I got into his solo work around the time he released 'hand cannot erase' album. I haven't heard so much of this album but you've made me want to explore it more in depth. Though I cannot pretend to know what you're talking about throughout this entire video (my guitar level is intermediate and my main instrument is drums) but clearly some of these chords are rather unusual yet very beautiful and moving all the same. I'm hoping to see Porcupine tree live soon.
I wasn't feeling well enough to go see Porcupine Tree live a few months earlier. Missed the chance of a lifetime :-( Please go for me :-)
@@AntoineMichaudGuitar I shall try my best to. By the way - when he performed, Ninet Tayeb joined him for 'Routine', 'Blank tapes' and 'Pariah'. She is also AMAZING! Her voice often sounds a bit husky and bluesy but she has a lot of power at other times too. Notably at the end of 'Routine' it's neither a primal scream or a cry that she does but something in between. I have never heard anything quite like it. Her solo track 'self destructive mind' is worth a listen (if you've not heard it). As well as her performance with 'red band' doing an outstanding rendition of 'I put a spell on you'.
Thanks! Yes, I've seen Steven Wilson live at least 5 times, once with Ninet, just never with Porcupine Tree. She is a unique and brilliant singer, indeed!
@@AntoineMichaudGuitar That's cool! 😎 Interestingly I figured out how to play 'Never Have' from their latest album earlier. One of the easier songs on there I reckon. It seems to be mainly just 4 chords. Simple but very effective. Hope you can break down some Porcupine Tree tracks in a future video. Best wishes.
Thank you, you're a great teacher
I appreciate that, thanks Zak!
Amazing artist and amazing album. Thanks for the video.
Amazing choice!
This is great! I've been struggling with never being able to leave the key, but last year I'm better at playing chords that aren't necessarily in the same key, but they still work well together. This was a great analysis of a great album and there are good tips in here. Thanks!
this is too good ❤ thx
Awesome video brother!
Thanks Antoine, looking forward to this - need some new inspiration at the moment, one of my fave albums too!
Very nice lesson!
Leçon vidéo très intéressante ! 👍 Merci Antoine. 🙏
Great content! I love this album too, in a sad way.
Really great video Antoine! Next we need a Hand.Cannot.Erase........
great🍀🍀
More Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree :)
I have other videos on Porcupine Tree! Have you seen them? ua-cam.com/video/yFXQE29rIOg/v-deo.html
Are these chords Stephen's work or Guthrie Govan's? I know Guthrie played much of the guitar work on the album
He played the lead guitar, but I don't believe he wrote anything aside from the solos.
I saw an interview with Steven Wilson a while ago in which he admitted he has very little knowledge of music theory. He just plays the shapes on the guitar and his bandmates figure out the key that the song was supposed to be in.
My friend told me about your channel! I subscribed !!! Don't miss out - P r o m o S M!!
The crazy part about all of this is that Steven Doesn't really know any theory or even what the chords are that he is playing at all.
He knows more than you think! I've watched interviews when he was recording the latest Porcupine Tree album, and he was very aware of his use of Maj7 and min7 chords and how they were carefully chosen. Maybe he doesn't care too much about theory, but he's not entirely oblivious either!
@@AntoineMichaudGuitar I watched those as well. I guess I shouldn't have said he doesn't know any theory at all. I think he knows some basic theory and chords, but many of the chords he does play, he doesn't know what they are and Adam Holzeman for example will tell him what the chord is. He writes totally by ear.
