A couple things I would suggest (as someone with experience working with concrete): 1. The rocks you used for the large aggregate were a bit too big. You want something a little smaller and more consistently sized. I don't think it will affect your results though, probably just would have been easier to put in the mold and reduced the holes in the surface. Also, aggregate isn't for strength, it just takes up space and is generally cheaper and lighter than cement. You need to be careful how much you add - I would suggest looking up a "recipe". It's normally done by weight. 2. You can use more water than that. It's kind of hard to explain verbally but I would suggest looking up videos of something called a "slump test" to get a better idea. The more water, the easier it will be to place in your mold. 3. You should cover your concrete with a tarp or plastic while it cures to keep the water from evaporating and cracks forming. If it's really hot, you can even go back after a few hours and lightly spray it so the surface stays wet. 4. WEAR GLOVES! I know you mentioned this but I just want to double down that they are necessary for protection. As soon as cement is mixed with water a chemical reaction starts and it's really bad for your skin. It's not going to severely injure you but it's not pleasant either. Also doubling down on the mask and working in a well ventilated area. Cement is a very fine powder and can really irritate the lungs. 5. Styrofoam can be used to make it lighter. There's actually concrete canoe competition for Canadian engineering schools and they often use styrofoam in their designs.
Cement can cause chemical burns. Not just small burns, 3rd degree burns as well. Needed to correct you saying it won't severely injure you. It may not, but it really can.
@@Lasomie Fair, it's unlikely but absolutely possible. I was going to mention chemical burns but honestly didn't want to scare people. When people have done stupid stunts like encase parts of themselves in concrete (yup, people are that dumb) they find out the biggest danger is of chemical burns. Not wearing proper protection is most likely to cause some irritation and not much more. I've only had noticeable issues if I've been lazy and left work clothes saturated with concrete on too long - I once gave myself a lovely chemical burn on the ass bc we decided to sit around chatting instead of changing. I much regretted that decision 😬
“Pro tip”- use a spray bottle to add water when concrete seems too dry. Also you can use foam insulation sheets to help lessen the weight. Look into something called papercrete. You can make it yourself. It is strong and lighter than concrete. Greet way to reuse shredded paper.
I love this, I find concrete furniture to be so timeless, and if treated right indestructible! Plus with Rachel's dazzling personality this video was such a great way to unwind after an awfully long day of work lol
For a first time project, you killed it!!! That’s super impressive!! I’ve seen Modustrial Maker do a ton of surfaces and the like with concrete, but he tends to prefer the smoother surface… I think he does the “top” surface as a thin first coat of only the concrete… then goes in with the concrete & aggregate/rebar layers after the first skim type coat for the smooth surface.
This is up my alley. My husband works with concrete! I never thought about furniture tho🤣😂🤣 I love the color of your hat and tank, so cute! I think snack asmr is a must every time now, the egg was the best! Stunning table and chair! Great job!!
I would definitely recommend cutting the builder's tubes with a hack saw. That circular saw move was one of the most dangerous power tool uses I have seen on UA-cam.
You mentioned it having a geode effect- I would have totally sat there and added something in the cracks around the side of the table! (Crushed glass is inexpensive and you can adhere it with E6000 or another similar glue) would take awhile but could be SO WORTH IT.
I was thinking an epoxy pour. I don't know about you, but my coffee table gets REALLY used and to think of cleaning out all those crevices when it gets dirty, give me anxiety...although a steam-cleaner high-pressure blast would work for that, but still, so many areas for hidden bacteria and grime. These projects are awesome though!
Love, love, live this! Since I'm setting here crocheting a shoe sole out of the macrame cord. I would change the top shape. Because funnily it looks like my crochet sole... But it's really so beautiful & if I wasn't doing this crochet sole, I would have never even thought about it.. once you see it you can't unsee it! I'm dieing to try something like this! I would love to do concrete countertops. And I love the white concrete more than any I have seen... just really takes it up a notch or 2!
Very nice projects. It is always nice and encouraging to see you getting new skills. Unfortunatly I don't think concrete is very environment friendly. It has a quite high CO2 footprint and as far as I know after a very quick research the so called recycling is more like a downcycling which means it is not used as concrete again. Of course it is fine to use it, but I would not call it environmently friendly.
Rachael brings so much to The Sorry Girls! Her videos are different enough to bring something new, techniques, video style, personality... But it's not too different, so it still feels like a Sorry Girls video :)
Hey I love the video and especially on a DIY level, concrete isn't the worst also because of its durability but it's definitely not eco friendly, green or sustainable (sand is a limited resource), it's actually one of the major emitters of CO2, estimates go up to 8% of all global emissions solely based on concrete. Again, the use for a DIY isn't the issue but the immense use in the construction sector of which close to nothing actually gets recycled (idk about the recycablility of concrete as well, sure it is technically possible but may not be a viable option because it's so resource-consuming).
yes! as a channel that alot of time claims to be so climate friendly I really wished they adressed this. Especially with all the holes the chair has water will stand in those after rain and if its cold and below freezing the expanding water will damage the chair even further. Definetly not something I think is sustainable or long lasting
This was my first thought seeing this video. The second was how freaking heavy concrete furniture must be. The video is well-shot and Rachel is great as always, but concrete projects are a miss for me.
Yeah, they lost me as soon as they said its recyclable. Its really hard to reuse concrete since it affects the resistance of the material, and it really depends on the country's availability of recyclers. Its really good because its durable, but it really should be used for things you expect to keep for a long time
That’s what I was thinking as well. Tbh it’s not the first time when they have false info in the video, which is weird because little research would make facts clear and for that size of a channel you’d think they would do their research. And speaking of sustainability they could’ve used recycled materials in concrete to make it sturdy. I wonder what that chair is going to look like after year or another outside due to all the holes.
You should be SOOOOOOO PROUD!!!! I am proud for you!!!!! I am absolutely going to attempt this, and taking my cues from both your video and from your amazing comment section, I believe that it will be a smashing success!!!!! Thanks ladies and wish me luck!!! 💜🤜🤛💜
Love love love the coffee table!! My hubby will love doing this project for me (really he will!! 😂) It is exactly what I wanted and a LOT less than purchasing one for sure!
When you used the water bottles for the leg shapes that made me so happy 😂 my mum uses big coke bottles for so many random gardening and DIY purposes!!
I just ran my Lomi for the first time last night and was kind of amazed by how well it worked! Going to dump the healthy compost into my flower bed tomorrow.
Unfortunately, the Lomi is just a scam and I wish TSG wouldn’t promote it as good for the environment. People really fall for the idea of instant compost being possible, when the Lomi does NOT create compost. I would watch ThunderFoots video breaking it down but it’s an electricity hog and consider the carbon footprint of manufacturing and shipping the item, which will eventually be in a landfill. An outdoor compost box or a pot with a tight lid to store scraps works just as well. Lomi is essentially a giant coffee grinder and dehydrator- it does NOT and cannot create compost but rather just grinds up food - compost takes TIME and the right ecosystem to decompose and the lomi completely contradicts ideas of sustainability. Great way to take your money and increase your carbon footprint.
I genuinely really love that chair. If I can find the chair you used as a mould secondhand, I think I'll make a few in different colours to put around my fire ring, since it'll be great to have something not flammable.
Okay no joke the sorry girls always pop up in my feed consistently since I started watching like 6 years ago and every so often one will catch my eye and I’ll watch and it BLOWS MY MIND how creative and cool it is. This table is inspiring the hell out of me rn because it made me think of pool days in my backyard growing up and drawing in chalk all over the concrete and the way it turned colors in water or excessive sun. I was kinda shocked they showed that to be honest. Also the no masks when doing the concrete mixing or sanding worries me
They rarely follow proper safety procedures on this channel. I hope they have liability insurance.
If they were in BC I'd be begging them to speak with a Work Safe rep, but I don't know how things work in Ontario
You mentioned it having a geode effect- I would have totally sat there and added something in the cracks around the side of the table! (Crushed glass is inexpensive and you can adhere it with E6000 or another similar glue) would take awhile but could be SO WORTH IT.
