In this clip, John Salley shared his thoughts on Gilbert Arenas saying that Dennis Rodman couldn't guard LeBron, and while he believes that Gilbert is right in some aspects, John still thinks Rodman is one the most "unbelievable specimens" to ever play in the NBA. John went on to state that LeBron is a mix of great players, including Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Jordan.
Rodman was the only man who wasn't scared to guard magic when he came back to play with hiv. That is all you need to know about him and his defense.

@@CodyvsEveryone defense isn't what it used to be. Defense is actually played without fouling. The 3 point line is prominent. And scorer are way better. Not to mention is harder to play defense now than before. Because before you didnt have worry about 3s, it was less than 10 3s being shot. Now its over 30. And its not just guarding 3point line its guarding BEYOND. Players are a scoring threat as soon as they pass half court. Which spreads the defense out. Elephant in the room is players are bigger,, stronger, faster and more athletic as well. So in reality its much more difficult to play defense. And actually harder to score because of zones. But let the old heads tell it.
Rodman despite being a clown show was a basketball genius on the defensive side and getting into players head. Rodman guarded Shaq and made it tough for him.

Nobody shut an NBA superstar down even in the 80s-90s with the lax rules on defense. Not consistently. But also, nobody made it more difficult for any of them than Dennis did for all of them.

I've been watching NBA games since 87 and I enjoy the higher scoring but it has gotten too easy...sometimes it feels like the team that hits more 3-point attempts wins, regardless of D. That is the reason for team USA' s struggles in international tournaments. It used to be the opposite way with the rest of the world struggling to keep up with the physical play of Team US...
That all being said I don't want the 90's Pistons and Knicks defense back...it was ugly, but a LITTLE more physicality would improve the game. We have seen glimpses of it when they let the Celtics play D vs. the Nets in the last playoffs.
Just allow that and I'm fine...

Rodman would get a friend to shoot over a hundred shots with different spins just to practice getting rebounds. He would study film on how opponents shot the ball and what their tendencies were. Rodman would've adjusted to the rule set because he would put in the work to do so. He was a genius in hos own way. Plus Phil Jackson said Dennis was the most athleticly gifted person he has ever seen. He wouldn't outright stop Lebron in today's game cause Lebron is great but I wouldn't doubt that Lebron would have some of his worst performances against Rodman.

Wrong Salley, LeBron is not all of them. The reason why is because he can't score at all 3 levels. He's either going to shoot the 3 or try to take it all the way. He doesn't have the mid range game like Kobe and Jordan. Put someone with a little bit of size and speed on him, he'll struggle. That's why Kawhi was able to do so well with him during the finals; Kawhi was able to stay in front of him and wasn't able to be bullied. In terms of just scoring, LeBron was much easier to guard then Kobe or MJ which is what Rodman was referring to

Rodman was a great defender, but overrated. Dumars was the one who guarded MJ. Rodman was great on the interior, but he benefitted greatly from having Joe D., Laimbeer and Mahorn, and later on MJ and Scottie. Take him out of the paint and off of a great defensive team and he’s average. He was more of an irritater than a defender!
Your point is correct. LeBron has never developed a go-to move. Jordan and Kobe developed low post moves. Rodman could move his feet. He would pick up LeBron at half-court. He would frustrate LeBron. Remember how Pippen had Magic frustrated. Magic couldn't get past Pippen.
When has LeBron ever gave up the ball? Got on the blocks and punished a player. He doesn't have low post moves. It would be easy for Rodman to guard him. Rodman would have problems with Durant.

What people forget is that Dennis Rodman watch tape on his opponents and understood where there spot was at on the floor. So if you want to be right wing Dennis would allow you to get there but you won't score because he understood the moves you were trying make. Ask Shaq and Chuck about that.

Rodman had 2 different careers defensively. The first was perimeter oriented hench lower rebounding the second half was post oriented rebounding crazy numbers. In his early years Rodman was one of the Best athlete to ever play in the NBA and had a very high basketball IQ. Lastly, if Rodman was playing today he would have access to today's sports medicine etc. Bottom line both these guys could play in either's time. Oh and for those who say LeBron is to big for Rodman, I advise watching the finals between the mavs and heat!!!
