one of the few people doing this sort of thing that doesn't basically talk a lot of waffle about stuff they're not really clued up on. Bravo for not being annoying. Stick to being just you as you come across as much more listenable to than practically everyone else
The error you had is caused by the drastic ds emulator. Once you start a ds game and then exit that game, you get the cursor on the screen when you try to access retropie setup.
is Attract Mode still easier to create your own themes??.... and or install themes?.... or is the standard retropie up to speed with the fanciness and flexibility tinkerers want??
I haven't tried creating my own, but I think it is becoming easier. Check out this forum to see what others are coming up with: retropie.org.uk/forum/category/9/projects-and-themes
CementRoots layouts are pretty easy once you understand how they work the hardest parts is changing orientation of snaps and that just am changing a few numbers in the .nut layout. I've built quite a few and I'm friends with a few guy who have pumped out a quite a few variations of unified layouts also
sounds like we need a video on the backend of the frontend.... for themes and graphics.... I've made many AM layouts and themes...knowing just enough about the .nut file to squeaking by

It could be worth just updating the packages you want to change, the actual fb emulator should be somewhere under /opt/retropie/emulators/
