The Wisdom of Odin is a vlog of my journey through Norse Paganism, a way to assist others along their journey, and a place to promote a positive image for all of paganism.
While I personally declare myself as a Norse Pagan, I speak on topics that also involve aspects of Asatru, Heathenry, and other pagan identities such as Slavic/Celtic/Germanic paganism.
The Wisdom of Odin is not associated or affiliated with any orginizations religious or politcial in nature. This channel/community is inclusive to all but is also non-political.
All gatherings held through the Wisdom of Odin and its extended community are private events held and organized by the members of the community. The only service the Wisdom of Odin provides is a place to connect with others of similar beliefs in the old ways.

I worship Thor and from my personal experience, Thor wants to be approached with confidence. STILL be respectful, but he often pushed me when it came to confidence, because that was something I struggled with. Freyja, I found, is very kind, open and accepting. I usually give her bowls of fruit, alcohol, or I write and read love poetry/tell her love stories.
I'm new to norse paganism and I just wanted to know.. How do you know they are talking to you or how do they talk to you? You dont have to answer if its too personal
@@faithd20 Not the OP here, but in MY experiences I find the gods don’t really speak to me in a physical sense, like you won’t hear the voice of the all father telling you what to do, it will be small things, like for instance just yesterday, the gods gifted me with this beautiful stone, which appears to have a rune on it, I found it under a log on a beach, I had recently made an offering to Freyr and believe that was him acknowledging my blot.

As a child I and even an adult churches and Christianity has never felt right for me and my personal feelings I respect the peace it teaches and how most Christians are very humble helpful people but I've always felt like it limited the imagination of a person and I never really felt like it was for me and being in church makes me almost feel completely cut off from nature and for me that's very jarring and makes me uncomfortable as I grew up outside and in the woods as much as possible being in the woods is no different than visiting a close friend thats the energy and calmness I experience while I'm in the outdoors. As I was watching your video I fell in love with the fact that everything you guys did was just what you were feeling and that it was all in the outdoors. After watching this video it was like a light bulb turned on in my head telling me that I need to try some of these teachings and get the book you spoke about thank you for making my day brighter. I found your channel maybe 2 hours ago. It filled my heart with passion and something i have not felt for many years i have felt really lost the past year not knowing what to do with my life. It feels like a path opened up to me and it feels welcoming and right but i do not know anything about north american paganism im excited to learn thank you for doing this !
We have a very active discord community as well with weekly virtual gatherings. It is available through patreon and is just an amazing resource.
obviously i am Anglo Saxon and so am an Anglo Saxon pagan as to were my ancestors a mix of Celt and Saxon. Even so (due in part to the migrations) there remains a lot of similarities between the Norse and Saxon paths. This channel is a huge help to me due to most of my pagan heritage being wiped or altered through history (although i discover more each day). I'm interested in Anglo-Saxon paganism myself and purchased Swain Wodening's book Path to the Gods to get me started. Is there any literature you can recommend to a beginner to help me learn more about the Anglo-Saxon faith?
Something I only learned the other day, I thought the Angles were natives from Britain, but those were Britons.. Angles, Saxons, and Jutes invaded the Britain and intermarried in different areas, they were all from Denmark from the looks of it, maybe the Saxons Northern Germany, but other 2 def Denmark..
Same brother. My family left Scandinavia in 1018. In 1231 I found they were in Germany and finally I found them again with my grandfather in the US in 1892. My father was born in 1932. I never could understand why I couldn't get into the christian religion and why I always felt uncomfortable and always questioned their beliefs. Once I did DNA testing and looked into my families past it all started to make sense. Point of the comment is same as yours. This YT creator is very informative and goes with tons of other research I've done on my own. Me the same as you have found myself falling into the Anglo Saxon religion.
Angles and Saxons were a Germanic group, as were the Norse. Meaning, both have the common ancestor of the ancient German tribes (think Caesar in gaul timeframe). It's almost certain that the paths were not only similar, but directly related. Think different sects of Christianity, and catholicism and orthodoxy. It's the same story, same gods, and all of that, with the main variations possibly occuring due to time and regionalization. Oðinn, Odin, Votan, Wotan, Wodan, Wōðanaz are all different linguistic names for the same spiritual figure throughout history.
Very similar to what we do for witchcraft. We cast the circle & invite the elements and divine, relay our intention, make offerings, and send that energy out, and then close the circle thanking those in attendance. Always interesting to hear about the little details that go into different paths. 🙂

Yes! I started as a wiccan as many do and have found my path in Nordic paganism. Where casting a circle and calling the elementals and land spirits were what I was used to and helped me get into a spiritual mindset, I still use it.
Thank you so much for guiding through the journey of Norse paganism. I made my first offering to Odin only a few days ago. And he actually took it. Just today I suddenly found my altar empty, despite being full this morning(it’s inside so it couldn’t have been an animal) and I believe he gifted to me some sort of magic. Because I left a quartz crystal in the bowl and now it won’t leave the bowl. I’m scared to touch it, I don’t know what he may have left.
I’ll reply with an update when I gain the courage to touch it.
So I was just given some advice by a friend of mine that’s a witch. She said that instead of just trying to remove it from the bowl by force, I should leave another offering and ask for permission to take the stone. So hopefully once he takes that offering I’ll pick up the stone. I’ll be sure to post an update then

I have to forgo listening to Heilung in my car sometimes because I feel myself focusing too much of the chanting and going to a semi-tranced state lol. I find music like that, which was created for these types of things in the modern world, are very helpful tools and entertainment.

The closing of a symbel is similar in that drinking example, in symbel they close by toasting first to Óđinn, the to another god I believe and then the last toast is for the fallen people who couldn't attend.
The signing of the hammer does resemble the cross but I believe but haven't researched much its old then Christianity
My personal rituals and the blóts I perform with my Kindred look very different. When we perform blót it is at both the high and mid points of the year. Those blóts follow a pretty similar setup; hallowing of the space, requesting the gods and goddess to attend, speaking about why we are performing this blót, making an the offering (normally food and drink), closing the ritual and finally releasing the space. We always follow with sumbel in some form and that's it. My personal rituals are much less orchestrated and usually is about me just giving to the gods and goddesses. I normally don't ask for anything on return, but when I do, it is always about me finding my own way but treating them for support.
There is definitely a place for each form or blót/ritual and that truly depends on each person. Cheers!

Nothings rang more true than what you said at the end. We learn nothing from gatekeeping and we as heathens are already battling enough just to worship our gods, we don't need eachother as enemies too
Jacob, I´ve been an Odinic for 15 years and still growing in this path, I was just talking to the gods to help me expand my knowledge and guide me to people who can give me more knowledge and more ways. And now today I´ve just met you. I thank the Wyrd for finding your channel. This is the first video that call me, and I have to tell you, you make me cry of joy to see that the Norse gods are growing with some many people!
On my sumbels I always thank my brothers that I don´t know but I always said that the fire in our hearts is expanding each day more!

I made an altar to Thor under my poplar tree on the equinox~ A few candles, some acorns and a viking mug of beer- and a hammer of corse~ I sat and meditated for a few and wondered if i was doing it correctly, and then i heard three very loud hammer clanks off in the distance. :):):) Also- thank YOu Jacob!

When you say too dogmatic, I agree. Most of this just sounds like Wicca with a Norse skin on it. I get how influential Wicca has been and I have no hate toward it, but it’s just not what I follow and it’s frustratingly difficult to get away from it. I also cringe at the use of the term “summon” when it comes to communicating or offering to the gods. We shouldn’t be, and can’t, order them. I don’t think that’s what people mean to do, but that’s what summoning is. I think it’s a habit that’s been carried over from the summoning rituals of smaller spirits in numerous magickal practices or even demons from the more Abrahamic traditions. I don’t think anyone is intending to command Odin when all they’re trying to do is begin a relationship.
I agree with you, it's why I use the term "appeller" wich means "to call" (yes i'm french) rather than "convoquer" wich mean "to summon", because in english it's maybe different, but in french, if someone "summons" me, it would be my boss most of the time, or a person that is hierarchically higher than me, so I find it disrespectful to say that I summon one of the Gods or someone else
In my humble experience, one INVITES our mentors, the Old Gods, ÆSIR and VANIR, into the ritual space. "Summon" is not what we do, although I understand that it's not necessarily intended as an affront to our Gods. A certain amount of respect and politeness matters.
I think this just all boils down to personal terminology
As someone from a spiritual family, I never felt like I had found my path within it. Until recently while exploring more nordic music and information something clicked. As much as reading information is great for learning history etc but its definitely a feeling you get along with it all and its lovely almost comforting to know you have found your own path. I feel the most at peace in nature and I hope this is the start of my journey.

Thank you Jacob for sharing this. It can be certainly confusing on how and in which way to speak and honor the gods/goddesses and spirits. Coming from being an eclectic pagan before finding the Norse path, I had my own way for rituals, but I had to stop and think if it would clash or even offend now if I were to speak to the Gods in the same manner. Now it seems more clear on what would feel more right to do.

I Love this guy i practice native Irish Paganism which is extremely difficult thing to do starting out considering there is no/very few established traditions of such. So it’s up to us to rebuild that using history(a lot of reading)
And your work tho a different culture is very similar mindset I find your videos extremely helpful. I think a lot of us get cought up in, “am I doing this right?” Rather then just practicing till you find what works.

I have to agree, the example that Heilung provides is a good contextual and inspirational reference for a "how." That said, good for you for going with whatever comes to you as appropriate rather than following a specifically prescribed pattern. There's nothing wrong with those patterns per se, but letting intuition guide one's practices makes it truly unique...which all our respective paths are. Well done!

Interesting thank you for breaking down that ritual you did by the fire. I also use fire (candle) as a focal point when I'm offering energy from my run. I put my 2 Mjolnir's around the candle making it a hallowed space. I just came up with this myself but got the idea of offering energy from working out from someone else in discord :) Having that breathing room to create your own rituals is so special and unique to our re-emerging faith! Trust your instincts. Refer to the lore and information we have to align it with the Gods, Ancestors and Land Spirits. Hail the Folk!!
We have a very good formula for Blot not to much different than the one you read from the book, there is a point in the ceremony where other work can be done or to add filler for seasonal celebrations. We have refined this system over 30 years Asatru and raising a family in this faith. It is comforting to have a model to follow and to have a place built in to perform other workings like marriages, naming, and seasonal customs. But that spot can be ignored if there is no other work to be done. It is a little different for solo blot and ritual but I have made examples of both of them for people to adapt to their own practice.
Lowkey the intro music is fire, and I would actually listen to that on my mix.
This year, I’d like to perform my first ritual with my friends during their annual solstice celebration. I don’t see any of them often anymore but they’re all great guys, in their own ways. I’ve brewed about 8 or 9 gallons of mead, took the time to age it on oak, and so my offering to them and to the Gods will likely be a few bottles of it. Share it around a fire surrounded by nature.
Love your videos! Blót is however NOT related to the word blood (blóð in old norse). It just meant offering, which could or could not have involved blood.

this julblot i kept it simple, just me and my kids. it was their first "real" blot now when they are old enough to learn about santas real identity.
i just set the table with an extra seat, served me, the kids and the empty seat. had some candels and some nice music in the background. told my kids some of the old stories and explained how it all works. later that evening they made some offerings (candy) as i kept serving the gods some drinks and other good stuff. talked tho the gods later when my kids had gone to bed

The right tool for the job that's how I describe offerings and blots
I have a question...you said that most people don't do blood offerings anymore, and I am wondering if the gods are okay with that? How do we know if the gods are pleased with our decision to change from blood to bread or whiskey? Or...were blood offerings seriously rare back in history, so that is why it is rare to do that today? I am not Pagan, but I DO include ritual into my own spiritual practice. I feel like intention is key in any ritual. Great informative video!

Hey, not sure if this has been answered on your channel before but what do you actually do with the offerings after their given? I know that some people will have certain types of food, so will they just let it sit at the alter until a certain amount of time? I know you give alcohol frequently so do you just wait for it to evaporate before giving again?
From a begginers book I read. It says to wait 24 hours to discard the food. Then you can properly dispose of what is left over. I like to get things that I can give back to nature like flowers or other things that animals might enjoy! so I will sometimes dispose of the offerings outside that is safe for nature. Other then that dispose of what is not safe .
Hey, great workmate, I really appreciate it. My question is, with your first ritual, what if you don't know who your god is and are making the ritual to see what is on offer? Because I did not think it was appropriate to start off calling something who you wish to seek, a god, if you don't know them yet? I mean, if this is an agreement, shouldn't the agreement first be created during a speaking or sorts?
I need to ask, offerings. How long do you keep them out and what to do with them after? like offering mead or spirit in a cup, meat, apples. What do you do with after and how long to keep them there?
Give whatever you can back to the earth..ie: compost, burying... burning if it’s something of nature that can be burned(petitions, etc.)
Honestly, you’ll know (before foods rot or other mundane signs) when it’s time to replace offerings x

That’s crazy I just started listening to Beyond the North Wind on audible the day before I watched this vid, it is really interesting and I do recommend it. the author points out the different ways pagans worship and view the gods so not to discourage any particular path or way of thinking.

This might be a stupid question... but it always seems as if people only perform rituals to ask something of the gods. But what if I'm in the forest, with my apple and I'm just like: "Hey, I have this apple. I'm just here to drop this and thank you for taking care of this place. Please enjoy and good bye." - And don't actually want something from them?

Hey Jacob, I just strumbled into your video and I found it's necessary to necro the comments :)
I am a pagan like most of the people here and i appriciate your work. But I found a little but important mistake, many pagans do (me also) when it comes to the word "blot". It absolutely does not mean blood. The word Blot is an old germanic word and means something like to fluff some one or something, or maybe to ruffle feathers. In the context of rituals it means to strengthen sth. i.e. the gods. So during a Blot you give power and energy to the Gods to strengthen them and the bonds between you, the participants and them.
The word blot can also be used as a verb - to blot a god... to blot Frey etc. In modern German we'd say "blotzen".
It's the perseverative mentioning in many medias like documenations on TV or some article in a news paper that uses the word Blot wrong and it somehow sticks to our minds. Due to this the wrong meaning makes its way to online forums and things like that. It is hard to find the correct translation of Blot in the internet cause of this, sadly. You need to search for specialists in German studies or linguists of old germanic languages who publishes their stuff online.
But I am way to lazy to rifle through all my books about Norse paganism, Asatru and Firn Sidre.
So that's my two cents...

Please reply back because iv been wondering, when you do give a offering inside your house or apartment, without a fire what is a good way to dispose of it? Like if you pour odin whiskey or give thor meat. Do I just throw it in the trash or what?

Im not sure if you have answered this already but what do we do with the offering when finished? Pour out the whiskey?
I do my workings outdoors, and the mead, ale, or other liquid offering is reverently poured at the mossy base of the oak that is my ritual area's North marker ("corner" runes in the East, South and West), at the conclusion of the rite. When there are solid offerings of meat, fruit, cheese or baked goods, I walk deeper into the woods and place them at the bases of large trees like oaks and other hardwoods. I live in the boonies, so it's only right that my ritual area is out in Nature.
Later on when your book gets Fuller do you plan on copying it and releasing it for people to buy?
Do I have to have a kindred or group in order to worship?
I have a question, is it possible that a ritual or request may annoy a god? Or make them upset with you? I wouldn't want to offend amy of them.

Hello. I'm like as new as you can be to learning the norse pagan ways. I am wanting to give an offering to the correct God or goddess in Hope's of getting a new job that my family and myself really need. I believe I would give offering freyr or freyja. I'm new to norse paganism and trying it. About the fire ritual, do you or they make a wish like love spells and throw the petition in the fire to grant someone's wish and then you and the groups dances around?

What do you do when your food offering spoils ?
I bury the offerings at the next celebration. I offer them to the earth, rare times they spoil. I think the energy on your altar space can make offerings last longer
